I remember living on about 70p a day on food while at uni in the UK, not very long ago. Staples were cheap bread, cheap butter, tins of cheap baked beans and spaghetti hoops, cheapest possible instant noodles, potatoes, apples from t' market, pasta, oil, salt. I didn't eat well, and I think I'd have ended up with a condition of some sort had I kept it up for more than three months, but it was doable.
