sony first party open world games have terrible open worlds. If spidey didn't have spidey traversal, yikes. Horizon could be completely linear and nothing about the game would change, Tsushima has.....wind?
Days Gone is the only one that actually makes use of it. Weather affects traversal, time of day affects horde movements which impacts traversal and survival, it's dynamic. It's still awfull dated when it comes to mission design. Between this and Tsushima, I haven't played this many fucking trailing insta fail missions since Assassin's Creed 1. I hope Naughty Dog and SSM stick to wide linear levels.
On the bright side, all these games should have killer sequels.

As part of Game Pass, the Gears expansion is totally fine, but people probably shouldn't pay money for it. I found all the upgrades and most of the collectibles and still finished in 2.5 hours. For my troubles, I got some exclusive skins for characters I never use.
I don't think it's as good as the Raam's Shadow campaign expansion from Gears 3 and that was cheaper than this, even.

I agree on Horizon.

spiderman's open world is literally just nyc, if it wasnt spidey it would be as fun as opening google maps
Genuinely curious what “open world map could be linear” even means. It seems like it would be applicable to literally almost every open world game ever

games with usless open worlds, where the open world is just set dressing, like mgsv. Nothing about the game would change if it was a series of ground zero missions. The open world is empty, no missions exist outside of the bases you infiltrate, there isn't anything to explore, there is no meaningful content in the open world. I think the only time it was even utilized is during a boss battle where you have to run away from the boss.
Compared to Death Stranidng, where the entire point of the game is traversing long stretches of land. 90% of the gameplay exists in the open world.
i'll take HZD tier open worlds over bioshock-esque jaunts any day
shit, everyone would apparently. those types of environments are gone for a reason

By Xpike Go To Postis it because the execs know that "open world experience" is a very effective marketing tool?its far more engaging to run around a wasteland than it is rerunning hallways from different directions looking for keys
some games can do that well, like the resident evil franchise, others just do so in a way that becomes immediately exhausting
By sy Go To PostIs Bioshock like prey? Besides the loading, I liked Prey's structure.i think prey was crazy underrated tbh. it was laid out much better than its given credit for...
i think smaller hubs/'open world areas' with more linear extensions is the sweet spot anyways. deus ex OG pretty much nailed it
bioshock's game design was pretty bad, but i think that just speaks about bioshock. Lots of games have done the "smallish sandbox level" thing well, like Deus Ex, res Evil, MGS Ground Zeroes (which ended up being more fun than MGSV in a lot of places), Thief, etc.
Wish more games had those, it's the perfect combination of the openness of a sandbox game to do objectives while still keeping it relatively focused to introduce new ideas and master the levels
also fuck the new mirrors edge

Tlou had a big chapter that I hope is the structure of ND's next game.
Big open hub like area that branched into smaller linear slices.

After his explanation, Sy’s comment made more sense, but I still had a ton of fun in Horizons open world. More than most. The ways to approach a battle all benefited from that space. The robots were big and before quick travel the shortest path between point A and B had the hardest enemies.
I'm glad some people here liked Prey, what a lovely little game.
edit: that among us fortnite mode is the worst thing I have ever seen. Shades of CS 1.5 user created maps

Prey was real good, went on too long and the enemies got a little boring but still good. Arkane doesn't miss.

They've been going bigger with that idea since UC4 but yeah I liked lost Legacy a lot.
Wouldn't be surprised if the next step was just making an entire game around that structure.
By DY_nasty Go To Posti still can't believe people here finished death strandingAll I could take is 10 hours. Have a lot of respect for what Koji tried to pull off but not for me.
My terrible hot take is open world games should go away.
a lot of the problem with "open world" games are the areas just aren't different enough
give me a million different biomes like WoW has. Theme park world > realistic world

then sony would die and yall wouldnt know what to do with yourselves
Red Dead was a top 5 gen game for me the last two gens. Riding my horse into the sunset was so damn satisfying.
I think most opens world games do suffer from the “go here and perform repetitive side mission” thing. TW3 ... holy fuck ...

By Fenderputty Go To PostGenuinely curious what “open world map could be linear” even means. Gated with a very clear sense of direction where they want you to go and do.
Personally I dont mind, since I still find the gameplay in their games fun, and not overwhelming. It's a matter of preference.
By Vini.lad Go To Postthe shit freezes for over 60 seconds when driving, switch tier resolution and under 20fps . cdpr finna get hit with a lawsuit.
Xone performance is even worse than what I expected post PS4 analysis
this is legit non acceptable.
By diehard Go To Posta lot of the problem with "open world" games are the areas just aren't different enoughI mean it took Blizzard what, 15 years for WoW to get that level of diversity? And that’s with ancient graphics. Plus I’m sure it’s like most MMOs and basically clone stamps the same five quest types.
give me a million different biomes like WoW has. Theme park world > realistic world
Biggest problem with open world games is the vast majority very clearly don’t need to be open world. Rockstar is arguably the only studio capable of making an open world feel like it’s not the same handful of activities on repeat, and they need to send their entire network of studios on 5 year death marches to make that shit happen. Everyone else is taking 15 hours of content that would be great in a linear game and blowing it out to 50 hour epics. Granted I don’t blame these studios for going that route after seeing what’s become of the single player market the past seven years or so.
i'd argue that an open world on repeat is something that rockstar has mastered
if anything, other games fuck up trying to do anything other than a sandboox
if anything, other games fuck up trying to do anything other than a sandboox
rockstar north is located in fucking scotland?? that's wild.
Edit: wow it's the largest of the 10 studios but the NYC location is the headquarters. I wish they weren't so secretive. Ubisoft levels of world wide studio collaboration but with dev cycles 3x as long with no leaks.

Terrible opinions imho.
Added absolutely nothing to the game. Same with Gears 5 and God of War's open worldish hub. Absolute trash approach and a waste of time. I'd prefer a linear approach and having a sense of progression instead of doing fluffy "sidequests" and always ending up back at the same spot.
There is no benefit in choosing which mission I take first. Unless the game has a leveling system and areas are soft level capped due to difficulty (which at least was the case for GoW).
But still it's more padding than anything else.
I told yall cyberpunk 2077 and cdpr were trash for years but nobody believed sy
Demons Souls is amazing innit. 5 different biodomes, tons of secrets, and the ambience is just something else. Managed to get one of my headsets to work with the 3D audio, where the other somehow sounds muffled as hell with it on.
Also accidentally killed patches at the area where you can find him. Oh well.
