I assumed he meant they have not paid for a licence to publicly stream the copyright-protected material and commercialise it.
Should it work the same as broadcast laws if we are talking interactive media? If they did, would they be owed a percentage of the sales revenue generated as well?
Every side of this industry has dumb takes. A lot of twitch streamers have gone on the record out there saying that people watching their streams for free is equivalent to piracy too.

Giant Bomb has been profitable for some years, largely on the back of their subscription base. What a take.
Hell, I've been subscribing for years and I don't even watch half the content these days because of my distaste for the newer people there.

One of the biggest issues, and one that will continue to be one, is music. In game music, especially music that you don't have either of the licenses to stream with, is a great way of getting your channel erased. It's one thing for it to be a random video game OST that gets your channel sniped. That's different. Some entitled folks haven't learned that the music industry doesn't care about how you feel about exposure or whatever table-top magazine of the month philosophy you're spouting. If those folks get their channel clapped, they get no sympathy. Everyone else though...yea it sucks, getting penalized for some shit that probably could be fixed, and not knowing why.
My assumption as well.

I understood the license thing, but as someone at the head of a platform as big as Stadia, surely he understands that most of the times it's publishers sending these people the game code themselves with an agreement of minimum hours of content played, right? Heck, even sites like Giant Bomb themselves were the first to have such agreements to be able to transition everything to video content, and they are a press site. Having to pay licensing fees would only kill the sub 1k viewers or non-partnered streamers, as more than likely any such fee would be waived for anyone with decent pull.
Like, even if he's technically correct (which I wouldn't know considering I'm no lawyer), the publishers decided like almost a decade ago that it's simply more profitable to pay streamers (let alone give them tacit permission to stream), than try to enforce any kind of restrictions. Unless you are Nintendo I guess. It comes off as incredibly out of touch for someone in a senior position of a major platform (lol) to start fearmongering about unenforced laws in regards to vg content streaming. That's a problem that solved itself within the industry for years now.

Don't really understand what point he's trying to make, but I would imagine Stadia has some functionality for streaming to twitch and youtube?
Yea, that dude is tweaking. His damn platform is built to take advantage of streamers, in general. lol. Dunno why he even opened his mouth.
He's a member of a platform that's struggling, and he's seeing a lot of money go a lot of directions except his. If anything, Twitch, Youtube, Facebook, etc. are the ones really making bank off it, and they for sure have tons of agreements with publishers already around streaming content through their partners. See for example, Twitch bounties, Twitch Prime rewards, etc.
Exactly. Makes me think he just momentarily believed he had a Take so good and so clever that it needed to be in a Tweet. It's one that even if he believes in it you would be an idiot in his position to ever make it publicly known, because it makes you look like a fucking amateur. You get the impression he's barely thought about the issue until today.
one day, in the far distant future
dy will run outta games. weak willed and desperate, he'll accidentally try a souls game
and, lowkey, like it.

At some point, it would be nice if Twitch and Google sorted the music problem. Probably won't but eh.

By DiPro Go To PostSo now getting paid in exposure is good?
I mean two points:
1) Some do actually buy the game at least.
2) When they're huge game companies (I realise this isn't always the case) the ROI can be huge compared to the cost of other forms of marketing.
If publishers really believed "exposure" was the only thing they got out of it, they wouldn't value paying content creators (really hate that term) so highly. VG streaming is really as basic a transaction as buying ad space in this day and age, and a lot of the times the price they are paying for it is $0.

If he had to pay to stream New Vegas, how much would theoretically go to Obsidian and how much would go to Bethesda?

Good looks on this. Practicing in FighterZ should be a bit better now.
The rap section is so struggle tho. :(

As ever, it would entirely depend on the terms of this imaginary contract (Bethesda).

i mean i assume most of the tracks there are either super cheap to license or made by twitch employees on their spare time
Also, Eldritch, if you want to be able to listen to music without streaming it on PC, you will want to learn how to use this (or a similar product): https://vb-audio.com/Voicemeeter/
It lets you create virtual audio devices. I used it in the past to listen/watch NBA broadcasts while streaming without having to worry about getting smacked down for rebroadcasting their shit.
IMO, the ideal way to set it up is to create two audio devices: one for just what you want to be included in the stream and the other as the default for everything else.

I guess Obsidian is fine with New Vegas and Bethesda now considering they could maybe work on Fallout again and get a little more than 18 months to develop it in.

I don't really have any problem with streamers or YouTubers. I've played games I otherwise wouldn't have because I saw them played online.
