Should be an interesting one considering Alex was completely dismissive of it and said it was uninteresting when asked why DF weren’t doing a video on it, which means this vídeo was done simply on the back of viewer pressure.
The DF video is pretty bland not much commentary or conjecture. Called it the Toyota of console designs
They spent about 5 seconds on liquid metal, calling it a brute force cooling method, and then basically just recapped the teardown with some comparisons to the Xbox. No real insight
What a surprise. Even dropped an asinine question around liquid metal longevity when in fact it’s meant to beat standard thermal paste.
So it’s a basic, Toyota esque design with nothing exciting to be said about it and even lets viewers think it might have build quality issues down the line.
At least they aren’t pretending anymore.

Why do you need a Benz to look at pictures of destinations you've already been when you could be cruising with your Toyota to new and exciting places, with your collar popped.

Can you clarify what you mean here? I'm taking it one way but it cannot possibly be that.

I don’t know what needs to be clarified. You think the video did a good job of highlighting and theorizing about the more interesting and off beat bits of the PS5?
Because to me it was a video about how Xbox Series X makes Rich more excited.

Of course it is. And expectedly so, hell he was more excited for the Xbox One back then so that’s a one way road.
Doing neither really. It is what it is.

Shocking

Sounds pretty imaterial to me. Tech is tech, and you either love tech or you love brands. Which is ok... but there’s already so many Xbox leaning voices in social media that it would’ve been great for a channel like DF to be a bit less brand oriented.
Maybe that channel exists and I just don’t know about it.

Begrudgingly it would seem.

💀
being forthright and open with gaming social media commentariat has been a deliberate strategy by ms in the run-up to launch so ofc they'll be less enthused by sony's rollout

I haven't watched it because it is boring "content", just like the Xbox one was. I wouldn't be surprised if you're right about Rich being more excited for the X hardware but not because I suspect him of any brand bias. He got to do that teardown himself and it's a novel form factor for a console. This is a video of him watching a sterile video of what seems to me to be a more traditionally built console.
I get accusing some places of engaging in the console warring but the DF lads all seem far more interested in actual tech than pushing one brand over the other. Especially Richard! In fact the only time I can recall them leaning one way or the other is some of John's remarks pushing that devs prefer the PS5 SDK over the Xbox's GDK or whatever they're calling it... and that's not really anything to get wound up about.

Sony's aloof approach might rub channels like DF the wrong way but I doubt there's bias

Enjoying it. Not a fan of the torch mechanic.
Fantastic game.
I dont get toyota-esque design, probably because I'm Asian?
From what I see both consoles are unique in how they approached getting a console at a certain pricepoint, where one adopts a more unconventional footprint and the other, on the cooling.
So what's Xbox Series X? German engineering? Because it looks like it had to cut corners on some parts too.

The Toyota reference is actually a complement, which is the funny thing.
Aight, ‘twas only 2 cents, wasn’t looking for change.
Maybe I and a whole lot of people are seeing things. If it were politics some of you would see it, I suspect, but I’m not looking for a posse here. DF are free to run their business as they see fit.
As someone who was interested in some insight about the PS5 hardware, this video was a complete waste of time.
It’s called a backhanded compliment.

Dissipating the heat is all down to what I'd consider an almost Toyota-like philosophy - not to reinvent the wheel (in the way that Microsoft has with Series X perhaps) but to rely upon what works and to add some extra flourishes where needed.
So how has Microsoft reinvent the wheel? The case has a compact form factor and they've used a vapour chamber but it has been done in the PC/Mac space before, the same as Sony's TIM and fan improvement.
Which is why I dont get it. Is it about the SoC die then, when it was clear that Xbox was aiming for extra power while Sony diverted the budget elsewhere for the console.
By Laboured Go To PostIt was. Perhaps Sony could've actually sent them a console to look at.Eh, they ain't special.
They'll get it when the rest of us do.
Anyway unlike Crusher I dont see it as Richard fanboying over the Xbox as his preferred console, and that's not even a problem if it is. It's a nothingburger.
That toyota-like term should have been handled better, but I guess some westerners prefer other westerners work.

By Laboured Go To PostIt's not going to fuck you lads. It's more or less I've seen comparisons to a japanese car maker before, as a backhanded compliment. Just felt a bit offended as an Asian.
It has nothing to do with Xbox vs Playstation, but the racial connotations.

My understanding was that Toyota are hugely lauded / respected for their consistent quality manufacture and design systems (e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_Production_System). But I take what you say, perhaps he should not have likened it specifically to a Japanese / Asian car manufacturer.
Valhalla's visuals are so uneven, gorgeous in some landscape shots, downright hideous character work.
Toyota is neither a compliment nor intended to be a backhanded compliment, it's just the design philosophy that Sony adopted to make their console, and a fair assessment really.

unrelated but apparently CD Projekt Crunch employees were working 16 hours a day because they essentially had to make the entire game this past year, game devs really got no dignity

I’m over FM20. Made it to 2030, legend status at the club, and had a lot of stories with some of these players.
The game is too good, we are a long way from Elifoot that’s for sure. It will be my last FM because I don’t want to be there when they breakout with a good 3D engine. A lot of lives will be lost.
