i thought you were supposed to be criticising the exploration/level design. fromsoft games are still great between boss fighters, but sure the combat doesn't feel as satisfying outside of them the minibosses are still godlike, although you can get away with that when the game is more than just a combat tech demo

the combat isn't good in or out of boss fights in from software games, souls games having good combat is still laughable. dodge roll dodge roll dodge roll

Cheesing, by definition, is playing it wrong. Wrong about vistas….I mean, just google it.

Yes I remember this convo. I also remember the largely positive sentiment not included in your screen cap that preceded it. Even better, the screen cap you do provide, you only stop short of calling the combat amazing.

By EldritchTrapStar Go To PostThe Switch version of DMC3 has style switching? Bruhhhh. Is Vergil in it too?Yes.
When I play an emulator or an actual game on my PC or Laptop, nine times out of ten I never complete them.
It just feels way more disconnected or boring. Ninety five percent of the time I don't care about mods either & my laptop & PC are my work place for my music production creation & business stuff, so I'm already on it so much as it is.
I can spend hours in front of an actual console or handheld, but the rare times I do play on some kind of computer, I can only hold my attention on it for one or two hours.
I'm also a single player gamer only for the most part besides some Rainbow Six Siege, Forza Horizon 4 & competitive Pokemon Shield on Switch.
The computer has always just felt like "work" & comes off really impersonal & "cold".
Maybe it's because I just grew up with consoles or maybe it's my preferences with game types, but no matter how much I try I just can't get into it & feel distant, bored or disconnected from what I'm playing. Even games I have on both PC & some console.
Consoles just feel more exciting, creative feeling, personable, easy & fun. Kinda like when you were a kid with toys or something. A console feels more like "it's mine" & its made purposely for gaming time & ends up being more comfortable.
I domt know. I know it's kind of a weird hang up, but does anyone else feel like this? Also I do know the positives & advantages of PC gaming & I have no problem with people that prefer the PC experience, but that doesn't change the fact that PC gaming still to me comes off sterile & too serious or something. Lifeless as an environment.

Yeah this is exactly why when people talk about PC being the only way to game I imagine they are the epitome of no life herbs who barely have a soul. Like when I didn't have a console I played free to play games on PC and it got kinda redundant after a while
PC gaming may be the best running or visually way to game but not the funnest way to game
PC gaming may be the best running or visually way to game but not the funnest way to game
There's this weird thing where people think that you can't do certain shit because its on PC. I felt the same way last year.
After a few months and I realize I haven't even turned my PS4 on except for fighting games and exclusives. Literally every multiplatform game I have, I play on PC*. The real no life is putting up with console bullshit simply "just because". Its a shit sandwich you tell yourself is delicious.
*except fighting games

I think another thing that makes PC feel disconnected is the plethora of messaging apps available to each player. Not only do you have in-game chats, but now you have Discord, Teamspeak, all of these game launchers (Steam, Origin, Battle.Net, Epic), Twitch (and other streaming sites/apps), ect. Hell, I've even seen people a few years ago bring up Skype group chats while gaming. So everyone is so spread thin for communicating.
On console, that's all you had, so the player's attention was set there. I always felt on PC it was weird that this is the same device where you can be gaming, doing homework, scrolling through social media, watching movies and on 3-4 different messaging apps all at once.

Lifeless as an environment. Can't say that I do, no. I grew up playing on PC first and foremost - even though I've owned and enjoyed pretty much every console since PS1 except the latest MS boxes - so I have never seen it as a 'work' instrument. In a way it's almost the exact opposite for me. Going downstairs to the living room, turning on the TV, receiver and the Pro and waiting a good 3-5 minutes to start playing a game feels almost like a chore these days, though it's hardly a deciding factor for me. Spoiler: in the end it's all about the games.
On PC everything is basically instantaneous ... and I simply can't live without multitasking these days. Being able to alt-tab to Firefox (desktop, whatever) while I'm going through matchmaking in Apex feels like a natural, obvious thing to do. And if I'm playing a single player game that requires my undivided attention, I can give it to it, if I so choose. Obviously I can do something similar with a phone when I'm in front of the TV, but everything just feels so fast and seamless and connected on PC. And that's before we get into the typing, ultrawide resolutions, input lag, refresh rates and all the master race warrior stuff, which is in many aspects just cream on top of what I already consider the elite gaming experience.
Funny you should mention the enviornment. One thing people often still mention is how you can't beat the comfort of a good couch / recliner. I used to concede it as point in favour to console gaming in the past, but these days I'm just about as comfortable in my high-end office chair, in a dedicated room that feels more and more like a gaming heaven (but is simultaneously as far removed from a 'man cave' as I can make it) with every piece of furniture, lighting and peripheral I add to it. It feels like the place to be in the house, much more so than my living room does.
I see where you're coming from though and I can hardly blame you for it. You do you.
PC gamers keep bringing up reasons why they think PlayStation gamers don't like their own PS or jealous of PCs. PS gamers don't care...that's why they play on PlayStation. If you like modding and cross playing and pointing and clicking and sitting upright in an uncomfortable chair getting hand cramps with hurt eyes starring close at a tiny monitor while you point and click over the same boring games...cool. Enjoy. PlayStation gamers will just sit back in their comfortable couches looking at a big screen playing better games with less online toxicity.
Yeah, see, you don't actually get it. It's legit like you're stuck in the 90s era of PC gaming, which was an amazing time, but in many aspects more like what you imagine PC gaming is today. Maybe I can blame you for it after all.

I see where you're coming from though and I can hardly blame you for it. You do you.
That's exactly the point where I'm different.
I also grew up with both consoles and a PC.
Gameboy, NES, SNES, PSX, Dreamcast came first, allthough I played a bit of Atari and C-64 at a friends place. Got my first PC shortly after my Dreamcast, after my conformation in church that brought me the necessary financial backing for my own PC.
Played on my brothers PC and loaned a friends PC for LAN parties before.
Anyway, I always used everything. Played nearly every genre and enjoyed both the pros and cons of every platform. While Multiplayer was mainly a thing of PCs, except for a few Dreamcast games, it was still during the age of having constantly people over and playing MP games on one console as well.
These times are over. People are older and got different responsibilities, friendships just ended or people moved on from gaming.
While MP games were still big during the end of the PS2 phase, the momentum for PC SP games was really somewhat small, we hardly got any ports or really interesting exclusives. That's when I started shifting towards more gaming on my consoles. Far more interesting exclusives and with the 360/PS3 the infrastructure for both SP and MP games was finally there.
Personal interest in MP games is close to zero these days anyway. Even more so on PC, apart from CS from time to time with Wooden, Hixx, Quiche or our weekly Fifa phase during launch.
Not like it's that different on console either, I hardly play MP games at all. Guess I'm just getting to old to spend my time with miserable people.
To get back to the bolded part. I tend to distract myself when I'm on my PC. Exactly what you described as multitasking bothers me, because I do shit that keeps me from focusing on my game.
On the console I keep the focus on the game and nothing else. Because other than that there is hardly an argument against PC gaming anymore.
There are exclusive games again, there are ports of big and important titles and not just cheap ports.
Being comfy is a factor for me, but my desk chair is comfy as fuck.
In the end it boils down to the focus I keep on the games and the better exclusives for me.
Won't rule out that I'll ever come back to the PC in full time, but there aren't alot of factors pulling me in honestly. My PC is shit, I've never cared much for mods.
Cummy games like Two Point Hospital, X-Com 1+2 are a different thing. Maybe the Red Alert remake, but overall I'll stick with consoles for now.
While we're at sharing our memories. I still remember the Euro footy game from 96. I dunno how many disks the game had, but I remember it being over 15.
Honestly I'm just happy I'm at a point where I don't have to worry about choosing between one or the other platform. Behind a monitor is where I'm more comfortable these days, but it wasn't always so. During the glorious dreamcast/PS2 era I was doing most of my gaming on console much like you, Penny, but I've always been a double dipper, because why would I rob myself of legendary games like Baldur's Gate 2, if I don't have to.
As for the single player vs. multiplay aspect ... I thought I was done with online gaming before PUBG came out. Like done forever, especially since I was never big into it sans peak mmorpg era and also first-person shooters are hardly my favourite genre. Then PUBG came and rekindled my lust for multiplayer with a vengeance. I've reconnected with old friends and made new ones thanks to it, same goes for Apex, and I legit feel like I'm going through a second gaming childhood with all the fun we're having.
It's pure cliche, but never say never, just follow the fun and the games.
EDIT: I also feel you on the focus thing. I too used to be a focus purist, but I've somehow learned to stop worrying and love thebomb alt-tab, it's become a way of life. I guess it's compensated by the fact that I still can't bring myself to play more than one (sp) game at a time. But it also really depends on the game and the experience I want out of it. Like, I'm very much looking forward to playing The Last Of Us 2 fully reclined in front of my future big ass OLED TV in faux-4K and glorious HDR, with my phone in silent mode. Wouldn't have it any other way. On the other hand, Ace Combat 7 is a perfect example of a game where being able to take a short alt-tab break after a particularly taxing mission is beneficial to the time I'm able to dedicate to it before calling it a day. It's really just a tool, depends on how you use it.

I was somewhat into MMOs.
First one was Phantasy Star Online on my dreamcast. Collecting big phone bills when I still had a 56k modem in the dreamcast (and during the first days of CS). Followed by Ragnarok Online, which basically financed my second PC as I sold the ingame currency. Peaked with WoW, which made me miss out on alot of glorious games. Can't see myself ever going back and sinking that much time into a single game. Not that it was a bad time, but I rather get multiple great stories instead of focusing on one game.
In the end they are just tools as you said. And any clown that constantly needs to reassure his own self esteem via their tool, needs to be thrown into a gulag with all these toxic cunts that ruin online games.
How far are you in Ace Combat?
I like the combat of dark souls, and hell, the different area's can even be somewhat cool to explore, when you aren't going through the same shitty swamp area that apparently is their creative limit. There is lots of cheap deaths also, despite what yurt will claim, with dumb traps that fuck you over and that you can't possible see coming, or just area's that runs fucking 15fps, where you end up falling off the side of things and shit, because of bad performance + enemies combo. Also just a lot of bullshit in general, because FROM might actually be the most incompetent japanese dev somehow. That usually makes me not finish the games.
But at least I play them a lot, unlike the few times I've bought DMC, which is an actual trash dog series, that no doubt would be better if made through Sony's Dreams™.

More I think about it, Banner Saga rides haaaaaard off of it's soundtrack.

Still, more devs need to cut that check.
