Hey some people like boring shit. It's ok to like boring shit. Psy and I both enjoyed KH3

even God Hand had better levels.

It had a subway, library, mandatory sewer and elevator section. What more could you want?

Look at these weak arguments.
Imagine defending this lame ass level design that actively makes the camera one of the enemies.

Why even play the game? Just play the practice portion at the beginning. The story is trash too. Literally everything about the game outside of the 60 FPS smooth great combat, isn't good and is often bad.
I would be upset I bought the game if it wasn't on super sale.

MGR was literally corridors into battle arenas with a mandatory elevator section thrown in, same as DMCV. Bayonetta too, just with more set piece spectacle and crotch shots.
What exactly makes for good level design in a character action game? Do you want more jank platforming thrown in or wha?

What exactly would be different about DMCV, if say the developer just made 5 different rooms and in each room you face a series of challenges that get progressively more difficult a la horse style. You could even stop pretending there's a story there. Toss in some bosses and quick saves for hordes cleared.

Progression of the environment, which is good subliminal message for how far through the game you are as a player as the environment gets more and more tree-y the closer you get to the big evil tree thing.
Which is all besides the point, what do you consider GOOD level design for a character action game?

That's how all the missions in DMC V are structured, kill rooms that get progressively more difficult leading up to a boss. It's even crazier on the higher difficulty levels.
You even have Blood Palace which is literally that, without the need of running to different rooms.
I am convinced you guys don't even know what level design is.
As far as the missions are concerned, the only thing lacking is the environment art in a few of the later missions.
By Fenderputty Go To PostWhy even play the game? Just play the practice portion at the beginning. The story is trash too. It's like saying why play a fighting game when you can just practice combos on the training room.
I would be upset I bought the game if it wasn't on super sale.
It's a game that's entirely about the combat, if you went in expecting anything but a Power Rangers-tier story barely carrying a series of encounters together I think you may have gone in with the wrong expectations. This isn't a cinematic experience for the ages or anything like that and it never will.
For me, I love the cheesy story and characters as background to kill the enemies with my very varied moveset in creative ways, because that's what these games are.
DMC is literally an arcade game. Missions, scores, high scores, 7 diffoculty modes. Bloody palace.
This is liking complaining about level design in a fighting game.
Just say you want the shitty mansion and dice levels and God awful bayonetta style set pieces Instead of making up some level design excuse.

I genuinely think level design and environment art style are getting mixed up.
By Xpike Go To Postflashbacks to bud saying doom eternal didnt look appealing yesterday
Speaking of which, by the current standards for level design i guess Doom 2016 also has shit level design because it's corridors connected to battle arenas and everything looks the same.
I do not endorse this take. I love Doom 2016

It's honestly not something I had considered until DMCV started to bore me. Action games don't normally bore me.

Nah … I completely dislike the art style of the game as well. That's separate from it being kinda boring.
Still not seeing an answer to the question fam. If you can't even articulate what it is you want out of the level design, then how do you know good level design from bad level design?
I think it's fair to say brainlet fender doesn't actually like character action games and is more into adventure games like God of war and such.
Doom has that NGB quality of a mix of smaller and larger arenas connected by corridors but that also wrap around themselves as they open up. You only really face a dead end during a boss fight or when finding a secret in most cases. There is an almost spiral verticality to some of the levels that aids the sense progression towards the harder fights and also a bit fair of platforming that imo doesn't get in the way.
I need NGB back in my life.
I'm also just butting into the conversation but have no real position. I bought MGSR years and years ago and I've never even installed it. Don't own DMC V and I'm not particularly fond of the series.

Loved me NInja Gaiden when I played black.
One a less trollish note: I do think I appreciate some adventure in my games and not just pure action. And again .. to be fair to the franchise, I was never a big fan but wanted to bite due to price.

I don't actually think the level design is a high point, I just don't think it's bad. It services the excellent gameplay which is enough for me to find it enjoyable. The environments being drab towards the latter half of the game is a valid complaint that I can agree with despite not really being bothered by it myself.

I think I can confirm that Phoenix Point is trash after playing a bit of the tutorial. Just based on how unfriendly the user interface is compared to other games like it. It’s feels fucking awkward to play because of it.

By HonestVapes Go To PostI’m glad it didn’t cost me anything more that 30~ minutes of my timeI've been giving Banner Saga an honest shot until some other things come out.... Its been refreshing. Nothing is touching Xcom, but there's still nice gems out there. Total War: Three Kingdoms and Warhammer 2 are great. Battletech is okay. Hell, I'd even recommend Troubleshooter over Phoenix Point.
I've yet to give Phantom Doctrine a try, but its on sale every few weeks it seems like.

I just want a DMC game with the atmosphere of DMC1, the agressive enemies of Ninja Gaiden Black, and the balanced remix of enemies in harder difficulties and spectacle of Bayonetta 1. DMCV Nero needs to be the star.
The best level in DMCV 5 was the one they borrowed from Bayonetta's intro, tbh.

Some of the enemies are basically there. Once Dante puts them in infinite hitstun it's wraps though.

I mean, what you're asking for is a different game altogether. there's plenty of different ways to build an action game, might as well just make a new game to begin with.
