Watched Knives Out last night. Daniel Craig and Chris Evans really stole the show. The whole cast was superb really. Christopher Plummer is someone who should be cherished. 90 years old and still putting in great performances.
Rian Johnson has his detractors, mostly borne from his Star Wars work, but he's really one of the best directors around. The subverting expectations thing is now used as a stick to beat him with, but he really does depart from the norms of the genre to great effect. Few spoilers coming up.
It's a whodunnit where actually no murder has been committed. The number 1 most obvious suspect, introduced at the start of the film really is the antolagonist. A suspect who can't lie and everyone knows she can't.
This is a really clever, funny and well made movie.

Can’t fucking wait for the Green Knight. So curious to see what Lowery brings to such standard chivalric fare
Also dev patel got that post skins glow up. What a hottie.

Sure, why not. I actually like Affleck as Batman, he wasn't too well during that time but he seems much better now (the man is dating Ana de Armas so that would certainly light up anyone's life).
ben's a great batman.
i'd rather have him do another one than pattinson (though i don't mind him).
snyder ruined everything. prick.

I really hope that one day we'll get a representation of Batman on film that doesn't just feel like he's a rich Gamergater in a leather uniform.
Probably bias because of my age (also never seen any of the Affleck films), but Keaton is still the best Wayne and that first Burton film is still the most easily accessible and enjoyable version of the same story.
Do think Begins is also very good too.

I don't think any actor or movie has yet been able to reconcile the fact they are in a big budget "superhero" movie about someone who is a massive fuck-head republican with deep-seated anger issues and not really any kind of a purposeful superhero.
If Batman were a real life person (which is the style the movies tend to go for) he would be someone with a similar personality to Elon Musk. That is your starting point, Hollywood producers.

he was great.
By i can get you a toe Go To PostThe worst part of BvS for me was Jesse Eisenberg as Lex.
it felt like a parody. it was such a bizarre performance.
It's the same thing as The Old Guard and all these fucking movies. They want to make these techbro creeps villains, but they are not interesting or compelling. Like, yes, they are evil... in real life. You can't do it better in a movie, just why fucking try.

I don't need nor want these people to be reflections of society in the way all modern superhero films want to be.

Most so with Superman. Just roll him back, strip the grit, strip the cynicism, strip the greyness. Just let him be a force for and a sign of good again, unerringly so.
By bud Go To Posti love keaton as batman. The funny thing about Lex to me is when he's just written as a dude who's like "why do we trust one singular man" logic bro who's also a rich fuckwad with his own agenda but I digress, in BvS he's just some edgy unhinged trust fund kid and I'm like yikes.
he was great.

Ya I guess what I want to see is not "the Joker" version of what Batman is, but I do want to see something more than "I am a superhero that is rich but also I have a gravely voice and that is the sum-total of the depth of my character".
i think the whole thing is just a sympton of studios not greenlightning anything that isnt part of a franchise so they try to make real movies out of the superhero movies so they can get a budget

I just wonder if this is going to be used to unify the timelines for an appropriate way to move forward with new castings, or if its just more one off jumbleness from DC.
Obviously I don't have any details, but Pattinson Bruce seems like an attempt at a realistic Nolan era style, which isn't really a good fit for future Justice League films.
By Not Go To PostThe actual big news is the Flash movie is still in development
Been through Uncharted levels of production staff.
Imagine typing multiple posts about comic book movies not called into the Spiderverse. Fucking nerds
By Laboured Go To PostThere's a point to be made about there being so few 'auteurs' given big budgets for non-franchise films/passion projects.
Off the top of my head, I don't think Eggers will ever be given the big bucks.
I watched Boiling Point there. Standard Kitano fare, which is to say good/goofy/violent.
The guy intrigues me. When I was previously going through his catalogue years ago I found a dailymotion page that was uploading his (numerous) weekly game shows/talk shows/panel shows that seemed to have the hellish energy of a cross between SMTV Live and James Corden.

TK: It was really tough to make the Japanese public perceive me as a serious actor or director. As an actor, one of the first films I worked on was Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence by Nagisa Oshima, back in the early '80s. When it was released in Japan, I sneaked into the theater to see how the audience would react. I thought the film was great and my acting was not bad at all. I anticipated that the audience would be impressed by my performance, which was completely different from my comedy persona on TV shows. However, at the moment I appeared on the screen, every single person in the theater burst out laughing.LOL

You can be like Nolan too if you don't squander the blank check from your billion dollar superhero trilogy on unsuccessful movies

LOL
Kitano has this weird thing about him to where starting in the early 90s iirc every few years he seems to be in a serious accident or something like that but the rumors always say its suicide attempts. Violent Cop and Sonatine are classics though.
By reilo Go To PostWatch more movies for fucks sakein case anyone thought i was saying only these two make movies,
i was saying only those 2 still make original blockbusters that see wide releases everywhere. for most Oscar nominees last year I had to wait for my local "smaller" theater to have a week where they would show 1 nominated movie per day, meanwhile I watched Once Upon a Time on the normal cinema to a packed house
By Laboured Go To PostWatched a low budget horror called The Terrifier which was… pretty nasty in that way low-budget horrors are to get attention I guess.Just watched it last night.
Project Power was very average even for a movie I was expecting to be very average.
Watched a film called The Night Clerk on Netflix about an autistic night clerk embroiled in a murder mystery but mainly it has Ana De Armas's tits in it which makes it one of the best movies I've seen this year since Knock Knock.
Yeah, seriously, what was that!?
Can we classify Tarantino as a blockbuster director though? He makes great movies, no doubt, but they never seem to generate the big bucks.
By Lupercal Go To PostCan we classify Tarantino as a blockbuster director though? Better to say that you would fear for the cinema experience after those 2 go - I'd probably still include Spielberg as well as a good director who reliably gets big budget films into cinemas, even if he's not been great recently.

Reviews of Tenet have started coming out. Only've seen a few but this might turn out to be his most divisive movie ever.
Critics seem head over heels in love with Tenet. All I know is that I'm hoping the 4K Blu-ray comes out in November/late December.

Predictable Nolan fare. I can't wait to watch an hour of exposition explaining plot devices.
As second comings go, “Tenet” is like witnessing a Sermon on the Mount preached by a savior who speaks exclusively in dour, drawn-out riddles. Any awe is flattened by follow-up questions.💀
Why is Washington’s protagonist called The Protagonist? (Seriously.)
It’s a particular disappointment to observe Washington coached into beardy impatience, as if he sensed the casual disrespect in being asked to play a character his writer-director didn’t bother to name. (It’s possible he grew the facial hair while Nolan was explaining the plot.)I'm out
