By Xpike Go To Postamericans slowly realizing the rest of the world has to watch most movies with subtitlesOne of the instances where I love that they dub nearly everything in Germany.
Being deaf, subtitles/captions are an absolute necessity for me. So, lol at people saying they can't be bothered to 'read'.

Reminds me of the thread someone made saying that Spilbierg's Tin Tin ripped Uncharted off.
By inky Go To PostI grew up with dubbed movies, but I'd rather die than watch anything locally dubbed these days.Quality is top notch these days.
Movies have always been done rather well, there are a few exceptions here and there, but overall the quality of movies is good.
There are some instances where I actually prefer the dub.
The difference was always the scale. For example games and anime stuff was fucking abysmal when I grew up. Both changed for the better, but are still hit and miss.
So overall I tend to enjoy most korean movies with a dub due the quality being real good.
It was the complete opposite over here. Cartoons/Anime like The Simpsons, DBZ, Saint Seiya, Captain Tsubasa, etc. are venerated mainly due to the quality of the dubs. People absolutely lost their shit when the same actor that dubbed Piccolo appeared in Gears of War, so much so that I can say with 100% confidence that is a big reason people love that series so mcuh. Saint Seiya's game on Steam made a big deal of getting the same voice actors for the LATAM release as well.
80s blockbusters like Back to the Future or anything with Arnold, etc. were done well enough to a point that I can go back to them if I want, but during the late 90s and into the 2000s most dubbing efforts transitioned from professional voice actors to in house TV "celebrity dubbing" and the quality rock bottomed.
I worked for a short while at a company writing subtitles for DVD boxsets, mainly TV series (stuff like Friends or House MD) and you quickly realize how some people working there have no clue how to interpret jokes or understand vernacular, but with dubs the problem wasn't even that, it was the mandate to forgo accuracy in lieu of making it palatable for local audiences. So if you can throw in potty humor or a joke doesn't translate too well you just replace it with a local reference and call it a day. And because these actors are overpaid TV celebs if they wanted to throw in their own material no one was gonna stop them.
Good thing about small releases is that they don't even bother to dub them anymore. It's mostly anything that can be considered a family movie, critically acclaimed drama or blockbuster only.

Watched Birds of Prey Last night. It was OK, just like every other DC movie. Enjoyable, but terrible script and acting. I love Margot Robbie (She is amazing in I, Tonya) but she was mis-casted here, truly non existent chemistry and delivery. Some of the action scenes were terribly cut and the hyperactivity to some of the scenes just didn't feel right.
It was enjoyable though, if you just go with the flow.

Especially in Sitcoms you had that quite a bit during the 80s and 90s.
I still remember how Al Bundy cited german actors/series during quite a few episodes that were never known in the US.
Anime has come a long way. While series can still be sketchy or have quite a few changes with a long running series, it's still alot better than it was 20-30 years ago. God, I remember when DBZ was on television here for the first time and they gave Vegeta to the guy who usually voices Steve Buscemi and he's somewhat to the actual Steve Buscemi. Damn those people were angry and there were so many petitions until there was another voice actor.
The quality of movies has always been far better with animes.
Anyway to get back to the overall discussion.
In the end most Video on Demand services, Blu-Ray's, DVDs always got the original language including subtitles anyway. So you've got plenty of choice unless you only watch cable, which is something that mainly older folks here do anyway and they need dubs.
I quite enjoy the quality actors they got here and it's a good way for actors that might not make it big elsewhere.Because let's not kid ourselves and pretend that Germany got alot of great actors that make it in the US/UK or other big markets.
The number is pretty small and actual good German productions are also easy to count. Doesn't matter if we're talking about a series or movies, there's talent but there's hardly production value, good writers and good directors. So it's a good opportunity for actors to do voicework.

It had everything I wanted. And the ending was awesome. And the post-credit scene was awesome too.
There were Echidnas in the beginning that looked like Knuckles.

Having grown up with subtitles on all movies, I've kind of gotten used to ignoring them, without them disturbing me. Dubbing however is the actual devil, big yikes.

this is why i despise german and french tv channels.
they always air the best movies (much better than the average film you see on dutch television channels), but they’re all dubbed.
i don’t know how those people endure that shit.

Director and cast give me enough pause not to just write it off. If Pattinson picked it, then I think there might be something interesting about it (or at least in pre-production).

The horrors of thinking you found something you want to watch, when at a hotel in Germany, just to realize it's dubbed.
Man, fuck dubbed movies. It's disrespectful to an actor, you are only getting half of his performance when you don't watch a movie in his original language.
I will always wonder what movie we would have gotten if the idiots at MGM didn't fight Padillha every step of the way. The man said it was the most stressful experience of his life and he shot movies on the favelas of Brazil, he even had a van of gear hijacked by armed robbers and even that was less stressful than doing a studio movie, according to him.
