By Yurt :3 Go To PostI like Watititit but I found the whole concept of the movie unappealing, pass.
also I hate kids and hitler so imagine
luckily it's not the real hitler, so you can watch it without supporting him or suddenly warping your mind, to think he was this funny goofy lad in real life. i know it's hard to believe, after hot shots changed all our minds on saddam hussein. the kid though, not much can be done there. i think the kids are surprisingly good in the movie though, he seems good at picking kids for his roles. that fat kid in hunt for the wilderspeople was great too.
By n8 dogg Go To PostOne of the best films of 2010s m8.Really not understanding the love for this outside of Sandler’s performance, and even then the repetitive act and structure of the film of “Sandler owes money -> the heavies beat him around a bit -> moves on -> rinse, repeat, grew tiresome. I’ve seen it described as “frantically paced” but really all that means is poorly paced, since there was no build up or tension in the film to me. From the beginning it started at full throttle and never let up which IMO is poor pacing. Best part of the film was the imagery and music and the ass on his girlfriend.
Think y’all are just in love with the novelty of Adam Sandler in a serious role. The same shit happens to Punch-Drunk Love, a film that is, to Uncut Gens’ credit, absolute wank.
By Wahabipapangus Go To Postjust watching the trailer made me want to not watch the movie. adam sandler is worse than hitler. This is actually worse than to call a jewish man than what I called Tom Holland

its a fine made film but sandlers character is a gigantic cunt and really so is everyone

Shame the film didn’t do much interesting with the setup.

Mel Brooks is great. The clip blackace linked isn’t.

Love Wilderpeople, and the leads in this are great. The issue with the depiction of the Nazis in this is:
1) Hitler is presented as an endearing goof
2) Waititi pulls the ‘not all nazis were bad’ card
3) of the Nazis in the film that were bad, the tension was sucked out of the scene because of the heil hitler joke that went on to the point of exhaustion

No, I think it’s a remarkably good film. It’s tense from the get-go and doesn’t let up. The cinematography, sound mixing/editing and general ambience is intoxicating; the world feels so genuine and authentic.
It’s a brilliant tale of the power of addiction, how living your life like you’re constantly reaching for the next high is exhausting and will result in tragedy. Wolf of Wall Street is the same; its excess from literally the word go, and Scorsese is beating you over the head with ‘fuck, this would be terrible’. Same for the Safdies, here. Howard is in a spiral of his own making; a film just like Irishman or OUATIH where the final act makes absolutely everything around it ten times better.
I completely disagree that starting at full throttle means poorly paced. See WoWS, Fury Road, The Raid etcetera.
I haven’t even seen Punch Drunk Love, so can’t comment there. Sandler’s great here and should have been nominated for Best Actor.

I don't see any of these as negatives (well the heil hitler joke maybe). It's fiction, and quite clearly not trying to be anything authentic. I know nazi's werent good lads, I don't need a comedy movie to tell me.

When the comedy movie is trying to tell you not all nazis weren’t good lads then I think that’s a fucking dumb mission statement.
hitler is presented as a goof until jojo starts realizing the truth behind nazi propaganda and fake hitler starts becoming more and more unhinged and megomaniacal until he's a pathetic wreck at the end desperate for any kind of control over a jojo who has rejected all nazi ideals at this pointi thought it was an effective way to portray the effects of propaganda on a developing mind
Also, not trying to be authentic jars fairly harshly with the scene where Johansson dies
Mm, when he’s saying things like ‘get your shit together’ and diving out the window I still think he’s presented as endearing. The only time in which he isn’t, when he is the megalomaniac ranting lunatic that Hitler was, is the only time Waititi’s performance is anything less than gratingly cloying.

but it's not trying to tell us real nazi's were good guys... Only in the mind of a 10 year old, in a comedy (who even also clearly learns better of it).

Uncut Gems' is literally the same scene repeated the entire film with no character development.

It's presented as a Hitler Youth's impression of what Hitler is like, aka a silly imaginary friend always there for him as long as he follows the Nazi Party and sacrifices everything for him. Even at the start Jojo gets himself blown up by following his advice, I don't think we're supposed to ever be endeared to him, but rather laugh at how idiotic the perception of Hitler could be to someone who has effectively been raised believing him to be the Second Coming

How is it just in the mind of a ten-year old? Rockwell’s character saves Elsa, then saves Jojo, and is given a smidgen of repressed LGBT representation to boot just in case you weren’t sure you should root for him.

Let alone how by the end, Howard completely gives in to his vices instead of just handwaving it and admits he has a problem - “I’m sorry, I can’t do it” - , Bogosian’s character goes from being severely pissed off to fearing for Howard and having a strange admiration for him, Fox’s character is shown to not just be a girl who sleeps around but genuinely loves Howard, and even scenes fixating around Howard’s kids show the alienating effect he’s had on them
There may not have been lots of character development, but there’s a hell of a lot of character. You brought up Shakespeare, quite rightfully. Does Iago develop at all in Othello? Not one iota. But he’s deliriously good fun anyway.

This would have more stock if it wasn’t Taika Waititi playing Hitler. He plays him for laughs constantly. The way he talks, the colloquialisms he uses. He’s supposed to be funny goofy Hitler, until he’s abruptly not. And then he is again.

Hitler is through his eyes, I should have said. But I hardly think one hitler jugend instructors action, in a comedy, tries to tell something about real nazis being good guys. 🤷♀ any functioning human being knows they are not, do you really need this movie to confirm it. but hey, my grandma also told me stories of how some nazi soldiers gave them food, when they lacked it with the lack of food stamps and so on. i guess they truly were the good guys. nevermind the one time she was shot at by them on the beach, for stealing
Anyone want to go see Pantera with me?
By n8 dogg Go To PostShouldn’t have depicted that one Nazi officer’s story then. What purpose did it add?'What purpose did it add?' is pretty much how I felt about the entire movie. Other than a couple gags from the little fat kid, I didn't really understand what that movie's purpose was other than 'not all nazis'
By n8 dogg Go To PostShouldn’t have depicted that one Nazi officer’s story then.
lmao why the fuck not. jesus christ. i'm honestly floored at how seriously some of you can take, what is quite clearly a comedy movie. it's not trying to re-write history, lads. what does that hitler jugend instructors story add to it? a little drama i guess. it certainly didn't add a feeling that nazi's were great guys for any functioning human, who is not already into nazi thinking.
it's like extremely mediocre joker though. it didn't really add anything. that's ok. but that doesn't mean i think it's sending a terrible message. at least with jojo rabbit, i learned that jewish people are allergic to food.
I'm just curious if this will ever end lmao, you both clearly watch movies with a different lens.
I personally don't care about how Nationalsozialismus is depicted in a comedy
but to have kids in my movies though, KIDS?!

My point is - what is the purpose of showing Rockwell’s character, his story and his homosexuality? It didn’t add drama because his turn towards heroism wasn’t signposted at all other than he was fairly lackadaisical in his work. His homosexuality is thrown in as some sort of virtue signalling because the film doesn’t explore it whatsoever, it’s just supposed to be ‘hey nazis can be gay too!’
It’s lazy. And writing it off as just a comedy does it a disservice, because it clearly isn’t trying to just be a comedy. It isn’t Anchorman or Hot Shots for fucks sake.

this man went back to see scorsese's entire filmography including student films like ""scorsese and pasta: an immigrant story" but he couldn't sit down and watch pdl
disgust

he's gay. that's it. i don't know why there has to be more to it.
i think it is mainly a comedy. a comedy can do more than just play for laughs at all times though. but it's clearly at least partly a comedy, and isn't meant to be taken entirely serious at all times.

jojo rabbit was underwhelming as a waititi film but this #notallnazis thing is a bit much.
The gay dude that help the Jewish girl but are still 100% down to fight for the Nazi doesn’t make any fucking sense thematically
The whole movie is like that. Also, it’s hardly a satire. It’s barely a comedy. It’s soft ball shit. Which is very much Taiki’s MO but this is even worst

It's pretty funny how often mainstream media portrays nazis as bumbling idiots and never soulless, violent monsters.

You what. There is a lot of serious movies showing nazis as well, including incredibly critically acclaimed and powerful movies like the pianist, der untergang, the boy in the striped pajamas and schindler's list just off the top of my head, that shows nazi's as what they really were.
