By HasphatsAnts Go To PostI too was shocked when Captain Marvel showed up in at the end of 1917At least they saved her for the end...
I love Day of the Dead, but it's such a miserable fucking movie. Basically the entire movie is 'Nothing matters, this is completely futile.' and it turns out to be true. Kind of reminds me of Alien 3 which is also extremely fucking miserable.
Savini's masterpiece for sure though

My favorite Of The Dead movie. I don't think it's as bleak as you say though. It starts that way, and much of the movie centers on miserable assholes being miserable assholes to each other but I think the ending is explicitly hopeful and positive. Even if you're one of those ppl who read it as a dream sequence. The three that survive do so because of kindness and a refusal to give up on each other and in the end the human race. I mean it's not really subtle the only ppl who survive the absolute gore fest that is the movie are the ones that are decent to each other throughout*.
*except for that one doc who had to die solidify the soldiers as the bad guys

Weirdly, Dawn of the Dead’s planned ending would have been far bleaker than anything in Day.
Day is great though, it doesn’t get the respect it deserves. Was great seeing the dream sequence in S3 of Stranger Things

Little Women
Had a lot to do to win me over, this. By and large, I am allergic to genteel period dramas, all woe is me how do I pick the right hot rich bachelor to marry. Can’t fucking stand lots of canonical works, a la Austen - there is just no stakes for me to invest in. And the first twenty minutes, half-hour or so didn’t really convince me otherwise; Ronan and Chalamet dancing outside the ball was so twee, I just could not give a fuck.
Luckily, the technical proficiency - every actor, costume designer, shot, et al is nigh-on perfect here - became married with some relatable emotional investment. How to be master of your own destiny in a society that doesn’t call for it; how to keep your decency in a world so uninterested in it; how to grow stronger through heartbreak and grief.
Gerwig has a real eye for casting; the standouts here are Pugh and Chalamet, but there are lovely turns from Dern and Cooper too. We got there in the end, Little Women. By the hour mark, I was laughing, tearing up, smiling at the screen. And the end’s repackaging of Alcott’s own journey is nothing less than outstanding. Brings the novel into a 21st century context without any forced modernisation. Great stuff.

By Willkiller Go To PostWeirdly, Dawn of the Dead’s planned ending would have been far bleaker than anything in Day.Even though it had a really low budget Day doesn't show it imo, great locations and like data said, probably Savini's best work fx wise. IIRC Day had similar production delays/troubles like The Thing so Romero had an extra year or something like that to work the script/planning. It shows. It's meditative in a lot of ways The Thing also is.

Colin Farrell got a bit fat but not fat enough for penguin

I wonder if the movie would have been that good, if Romero would have done an R-Rating and getting the entire budget, instead of getting just half and not holding back on gore.
Original script is alot closer to Land of the Dead.
Robin Lord Taylor was skinny and he was a terrific Penguin in Gotham.
Give Farrell a good script, make him committed to the role and he will turn a fine performance.
Not worried about The Batman one bit, they have a great director who was given a lot of time to work on this, the cast is excellent and the whole project is free of the traps of an extended universe.

Jojo Rabbit - An entertaining movie utilizing the Mel Brooks school of making fun of how idiotic the Nazis are and succeeding at it, with a a shift towards the dramatic in the end. The girl was super cute, and ScarJo seems to have made it her mission to show the world she's a great actress again between this and Marriage Story. A in all, a very enjoyable experience.
I would definitely say Day of the Dead's ending is very morbid/bleak. The ending of Night of the Dead is fucked up because no one survives, but it does show humans have the ability to fight the zombie horde pretty effectively, the ending of Dawn has them riding off into the sunset but throughout the movie it's made obvious there are other survivors(the motorcycle gang, everyone at the start, etc) and there's the whole imagery of Francine's baby with Flyboy 'starting life anew'
By the end of Day of the Dead, they go to a remote island. Even John says at the start that it won't last them very long and he knows he's being selfish, and he'd do it anyway. By the end of the movie, Rhodes is rightfully pissed off that his men/friends are getting massacred just so Frankenstein can turn a zombie into a dog. Which has seemingly taken them months. There's no way he can do that with the, by his own words, millions of zombies out there. Miguel goes completely insane. You never see even a glimpse of possible other human life out there. The ending just feels like 'this is the best we can do for now and everything truly is lost.' Not to mention Sarah is still having night terrors.
Anyways, I want to watch Lord of the Rings. Should I watch The Hobbit? And if so should I watch it before or after?

By data Go To PostAnyways, I want to watch Lord of the Rings. Should I watch The Hobbit? And if so should I watch it before or after?Watch the original trilogy, and if you really love them, watch The Hobbit.
I don't know if The Hobbit films work on their own or as actual prequels. They're entirely too long, full of fan service, and way more reliant on cgi in a way that makes them age a lot worse than the originals. You really have to have a huge attachment to Lord of the Rings for it to work.
The Hobbit films are fucking abject, they’re way worse than the Star Wars prequels in my opinion when you consider the quality of the LOTR trilogy before them
By bud Go To Postthe smaug bits were fun, and watching it in hfr was mind-blowing.Thought the HFR (at least on the first one, never saw it on the other two iirc) just didn’t work, it felt so fake. Like we were watching a tv show instead of a proper film.
that's about it.
By bud Go To Postthe smaug bits were fun, and watching it in hfr was mind-blowing.Yeah, the last act of Desolation of Smaug is easily the high point of the films.
that's about it.
I think my biggest problem with them, aside from how bloated they are, is that the tone is so all over the place. It's bouncing back and forth between Gandolf discovering Sauron and a goofy bit where dwarves are floating down a river in barrels. The novel is light, but they added all this stuff that doesn't need to be there and really clashes with the source material.
Don't forget the floating down the river in barrels bit was clearly shot with a GoPro so the quality of it looked off as a result.
By reilo Go To PostDon't forget the floating down the river in barrels bit was clearly shot with a GoPro so the quality of it looked off as a result. That was only a few shots. It looked like shit tho.
I think you have a decent 60-90 minutes of quality footage between the 3 movies, so I think the prequels comparison is way off.
By reilo Go To PostDon't forget the floating down the river in barrels bit was clearly shot with a GoPro so the quality of it looked off as a result. All the GoPro shots look terrible and you can easily see all the green screen effects happening in the background. It's so jarring.
Another thing I'd add to my list of issues is the films lack any tension. None of the dwarves are ever harmed ever, unless it's to further this terrible romance plot (like, what is the point of that scene with the giants in the first one when nobody gets hurt, it adds nothing to plot, etc), Bard and Legolas look like superheroes. It's absurd. It's cartoony in a way that I do not want or expect coming off Lord of the Rings.

Yesterday was the 25th anniversary of the theatrical release of one of the best romantic movies of all time.
I absolutely love this movie but never seen the sequels.
Think today will be finally the day that I will buy a Criterion Collection Blu-ray.

Saw Parasite, and for me it was the best movie of last year with Midsommar behind it.
Yesterday I went to see 1917, and throughout the movie all I could think was how it would've worked ten times better as a videogame.

As a nice addendum to our chat about local cinemas, I just booked tickets for a week today for Parasite which features a live satellite Q&A with Bong Joon Ho.
What a cinema.

Bong said that he would love to direct an episode of Mindhunter. Fincher should stop fucking around and get on that.

By n8 dogg Go To PostI don’t mind the first Hobbit film. Quite charming in a lot of ways.
Agreed. I never read the book, though I should. I read TLOTR. I think the lack of source material helped me some. I didn't notice what was bloat and what wasn't. The first was good enough and desolation of Smaug's ending was fuckin' ace. The last one kinda blew though.
By AlphaSnacks Go To PostSaw the The Gentlemen yesterday.I went in not expecting much. A movie starring Charlie Hunnam? Everything he’s been in has been awful.
Was terrific.
Was surprisingly good.
The first one is the only good one.
I have vague recollections of the other ones. I stopped watching at 6 or 7 or 8. Can't tell.

I think 5 is genuinely a very good movie. Some immense action scenes in that one.
