Sounds like he wants more than just The Clips to protest since he's speaking on behalf of the players' union.
I just watched the clip of the discussion on TNT from tonight.. how the hell is Bill Russell not even mentioned?
The only plan I see the NBA enacting is the one where they give him mountains of money to go away lol
The only plan I see the NBA enacting is the one where they give him mountains of money to go away lolNo need to give him mountains of money, just find a buyer (and there will be LOTS of interested parties) and start a bidding war.
If they get the Seattle folks involved I could see the Clips eventually selling for close to $1 billion.
I hope they are basically going to force him out. I dislike most of the Clippers players and their excessive flopping, but this dude needs to go ASAP. As a warriors fan, it takes a long time for something good to happen to either of our franchises, so when something off the court causes issues, it needs to be dealt with.
Sterling has dug himself into a hole he can't get out of. He will sell the team, it's a guarantee. No apology will fix any of this shit. If he doesn't sell the team, the team becomes virtually worthless financially. Fan attendance will be virtually non-existent. Merchandise sales will literally come to a screeching halt. All endorsements will be pulled. The protests will be astronomical.
And there is no light at the end of the tunnel for him, he will forever be ostracized and isolated. He'll be rich, but he'll be lonely. And he'll die as such too.

The saddest thing about this situation is that the best solution is giving a scumbag a billion dollars to go away.
The saddest thing about this situation is that the best solution is giving a scumbag a billion dollars to go away.At least there's a chance the NBA will guilt him into donating a certain percentage of the sale price to worthy causes.
Oh come on Mamba. That's something the black people who don't watch basketball say on GAF. This isn't some pressing civil rights issue, and you know that as of right now, playing and winning is more important.I actually completely agree with you.
Boycotting in this particular situation is pointless and most of the people criticizing and saying (namely JVG in this example) the players should do X could do something themselves.
I agree others could do something else, too.
I don't think the Clippers should boycott unilaterally. I think that would be a mess. But if the Warriors, headed by their owner Joe Lacob, agreed with Doc to not play that it would be something big. And the NBA will not go after them for violating the terms of the CBA because that would be the worst possible PR hit ever. They would be forced to back them up and other owners, who are supposedly staying quiet despite their disdain for Sterling, would step up to the plate too.
And you're very right others should do something. JVG should boycott calling Clipper games as should ever other announcer on TV and radio. And Reporter. And Sponsor. And Dance team. And singers/performers. ESPN/TNT should refuse broadcasting their games next year (they probably can't this year). And everyone else (not including the workers who make little money). A message should be sent from every corner about how unacceptable this is and he needs to get out.
The fans should not show up to the games at all. Not one. If a game is played, the arena should be empty. Los Angeles basically booted out Frank McCourt (granted with help of the MLB itself) by not showing up to games. Not to the extent I'm calling for, but the money is what made a big difference. Make Sterling, who is naturally a cheap fuck, feel it in his wallet fast and dirty and he will get out.
I get that the players and most people are waiting on the league to do something first, but I believe being proactive right away is the best approach. I think if both teams + GSW owners do it, the other teams/owners and networks will follow suit along with them. Just my opinion.
I am really glad that sponsors have pulled out insanely fast, however. I myself will never buy another Clippers ticket so long as he is the owner (and yes, I have in the past).
Repost from the OT:
Q: Can Silver force Sterling to say whether the voice on the tapes is his?
A: Yes. Under the terms of Paragraph 24(m)(ii) of the "constitution" that governs the 30 owners of NBA teams and establishes the authority of the owners' commissioner, Silver can require Sterling to respond under oath to questions. The commissioner has "the right to require testimony and the production of documents and other evidence from any Member." As an owner, Sterling is a "member" of the NBA. Sterling and his lawyers could delay answering questions from Silver, but if Sterling refuses to admit or to deny that it is his voice on the tapes, he is in violation of the constitution and would face termination. He has no protection from the U.S. Constitution's Fifth Amendment guarantee against self-incrimination, because he is not facing any charge of any crimeQ: What penalties can Silver issue?
A: Under the provisions of the bylaws, Silver has two sets of powers that he may use. Under either, he can issue a lifetime suspension and a substantial fine. Under Paragraph 24(l) of the constitution that was adopted by the NBA owners on Oct. 26, 2005, he can issue a fine of up to $2.5 million, can suspend an owner indefinitely and can order the forfeiture of draft picks.
…
In another provision, Paragraph 35(A)©, Silver can issue an indefinite suspension and a fine of $1 million to any owner who "makes … a statement having or designed to have an effect prejudicial or detrimental to the best interests of basketball."Q: Is it possible for Silver and the NBA to terminate Sterling's franchise ownership?http://espn.go.com/espn/otl/story/_/id/10852199/challenge-donald-sterling
A: Yes. Under the terms of Paragraph 13 of the constitution, the owners can terminate another owner's franchise with a vote of three-fourths of the NBA Board of Governors, which is composed of all 30 owners.

Principles only mean so much with the money on the line.
Although one even has to wonder about the motives of everybody if this guy was such a known racist douche for decades. Come out and publicly denounce him when appropriate. "Forget", again.
magic johnson is willing to be friends and business partners with a known slumlord and racist, but when that slumlord racist tells his girlfriend not to go around taking photos with magic johnson after fucking him, thats just TOO FARlol @ mark jackson being a self serving fuck

we need action NOW to stop this deplorable racism that's been going on for more than 30 years and we all knew about it
we need action NOW to stop this deplorable racism that's been going on for more than 30 years and we all knew about itWhat's wrong with this? Everyone knew about it, but nothing could be done. This is a unique opportunity with the media frenzy, the fleeing sponsors, the players in uproar, it's a perfect storm. I keep saying it but we won't get a chance like this again, that's why it has to be now.

see: elton brand incident(s), elgin baylor incidents, literal slumlording and related lawsuit incidents, direct quotations calling minority tenants dirty rats etc.
the league just shut up in all of those instances and did nothing, and so did everyone involved in the league, league front offices down to locker room reporters, letting them all blow over. and they all happily continued to do work with sterling, despite knowing about all of this
but now all of a sudden those same people are going to act sanctimonious because they've been caught looking fucking stupid at best and complicit at worst? and you think thats just awesome?
its especially jarring when it comes from a place that's completely self serving, like from civil rights leader lebron james and mark "martin luther king jr reborn in the flesh praise be to his principles" jackson. they're giving their opinions about what clippers fans/players should do only to help themselves, without having nearly the same stake in the process as those players. without noticing they're playing in the exact same league for the exact same owners as the ones that have tolerated and protected sterling. but no, mark thinks only clippers games and the clippers players should be boycotted/boycott. as if sterling doesn't make a share of all the revenue in the league. because what mark actually gives a fuck about is his poverty ass dubs team being given new life due to this shit.
it all reeks of bullshit. no one here should get pats on the back for suddenly, after thirty odd years of making money together with this guy, coming out with the incredibly brave proclamation of "MAN RACISM IS REALLY BAD YOU GUYS".

Rockets owner, philly Owner, Jeanie Buss, MJ and others have all come out pretty harsh already. Sounds like the owners are all on the same page (perhaps Silver used this time to coordinate with owners properly more than anything else) and they aren't staying silent.
Silver is going to announce a decision tomorrow at 2PM EST presser.

that's true, it seems an opportunistic grab at the moral high ground, and i'll bet there will be white people coming out of the woodwork to SUPPORT THEIR BLACK BROTHERS and SHOW THEM HOW MUCH THEY CARE and proclaim how EAGER THEY ARE JUST TO LISTEN TO THE BLACK COMMUNITY. i see this kind of thing a lot living in a circle jerk city like portland. it's cynical, but that is where america is right now, and it will be that way for the foreseeable future.
sterling's a scumbag, though. looks like the political climate is right to finally get rid of him, and that may not have been the case six months or six years ago.
Yeah all this sudden outrage to me, is the worst part of this. This isn't new news. Its not like we are finding out that friend of the community Donald Sterling has secretly been hiding his racism for 50 years. The guy has been open and up front about what a scum bag he is for decades. How come no one gave a shit over any of those past incidents?
just because you have a short memory doesnt mean that there havent been other opportunitiesYou're conflating bad things Sterling does with actual opportunities for meaningful action. None of those incidents got any mainstream traction, which is why nothing could be done, and bitching about that isn't going to change a thing. Maybe you should deal with the present instead of crying about how the past should have been different.

As for motives and self-serving agendas, who really gives a shit as long as it gets Sterling out of the league? You want a world where everyone does everything for the right reasons? Good luck with that. I'll settle for a world without Donald Sterling as an NBA owner.

AFAIK his previous incidents were all stories and we all know he's a scumbag but now there's near irrefutable proof.
RT @sam_amick: That's the buzz MT @JeffZillgitt: Nothing could've prepped Adam Silver for this crisis, but I expect Silver to drop biggest hammer he can.
Several league officials – including owners and Board of Governors members – told Yahoo Sports they believe Silver has been studying the nuclear option on Sterling: a provision in the NBA's bylaws that would allow Silver to summon a vote of league owners to strip Sterling of his ownership. The NBA would run the Clippers until the team could be sold.Per Woj. The press conference should be good.

Sterling got a lifetime ban. Can't go to any games, can't make any personnel decisions, can't go to any owners meetings, can't even visit the practice facility.
Silver urges the board of governors to force a sell of The Clippers.
Silver's doing a much better job with these questions now that he's getting comfortable.
And he's not blatantly spewing douchebaggery like Stern usually does either.

Shit, they asked if Silver expects Sterling to continue making a profit as an absentee owner if the 3/4 vote doesn't go through.
Silver:" I fully expect the support of 3/4 of team owners."

The fight isn't over yet. We have to see what Sterling does to counteract this. There's nothing he can do if he loses the vote. There's no legal recourse, it's there in the charter.
