How does Whitlock even get play after his Jeremy Lin shit? Who is he to talk about racism and the public reaction to it, the motherfucker should be persona non grata in sports media.

Maybe then it wasn't even brand management, it was crisis management. The story had reached a point where, on a national level, the players (and the league itself) was in an untenable position. There's no way to both play and not play, which is how we ended up with that muted warm-ups statement. It was an acknowledgement that things were fucked. And going one way or the other wasn't an option. It was fucked that the players were put in that position in the first place. Silver did the very least he could, which would resolve a paradox that was gradually consuming the entire league.
I think these cynics are missing the point. Yes, it was crisis management. That was the exact thing that empowered them to do what they did. The language of the NBA constitution is vague enough that Silver had to be able to show that Sterling's continued presence was causing serious material damage to the league. They didn't have the power to just say "you're mean, now divest yourself of your billion dollar asset."
In the past they could have fined him for detrimental conduct and maybe issued a suspension if somebody had used league mechanisms to lodge a formal complaint, but somehow that never seemed to happen.
'the league couldn't go on speculation'
we're talking about the NBA, right?
Yes, but we're talking about Sterling bringing a lawsuit. The NBA would lose in court and those types of damages (called IIRC Tremble damages) are huge. You can't take that kind of risk.
The NBA's argument now is pretty iron-clad because sponsors pulled out and players threatened to boycott. There's a very clear and direct affect on the NBA's brand from a financial standpoint.
I'm not arguing the NBA can never do something based on speculation, but in this case, their hands were tied.
And kudos to him for actually getting something out instead of twiddling his thumbs and waiting to see who's ass is safe to kiss at the end
Nah, this is just Whitlock's schtick. He tries so hard to be different for the sake of being different, but it never comes off genuine and is often a jumbled mess (like his misinterpretation of privacy rights).
Like I said, Bomani Jones was right in his criticism of the coverage. He wrotre about Sterling years ago. He's complaining not that we've booted him out but that it took him saying some awful things outloud (and get caught) to a gf for it to happen when his prior stuff should have gone more noticed since it actually harmed the lives of actual people. That's valid criticism and rather a sad commentary on our media and/or priorities. Whitlock's commentary is vacuous with no resolution.

Still waiting for that day...
Seems like this is the slippery slope Mark Cuban was talking about:
8 Things That Won't Get You Banned by the NBA

Critics are now calling to question past questionable behavior in the league and how it was dealt with. How will it be dealt with in the future? By all rights, JR Smith, Arenas, and Artest shouldn't have been in the league anymore...I'd have to completely agree with that. What about outspoken fans like Spike Lee? Where does it end exactly?

When a 19-Year-Old Was Shot at the Home of L.A. Clippers Owner Donald T. Sterling, Police Sought Charges Against His Son Scott. But the D.A.'s Office Declined to File, For Reasons Detectives Still Don't Accept.
That's not what happened in a wealthy part of Los Angeles, with a shooting more than a year ago at the Beverly Hills home of Donald T. Sterling–lawyer, commercial real estate giant, owner of the Los Angeles Clippers professional basketball team and fund-raiser for outgoing Dist. Atty. Gil Garcetti. The shotgun was held by Sterling's son, Scott, then 19.
Beverly Hills police investigated the shooting quickly. They asked for charges against Scott Sterling within two weeks. Eventually they also called prosecutors' attention to Donald Sterling, citing the transcript of a phone call with a detective in which the elder Sterling resorted to what police regarded as an attempt at intimidation or influence peddling.
The victim, prosecutors said, wasn't credible. The conclusion left police frustrated. Medical and ballistics reports show that the victim was shot from behind from at least 15 feet away. Yet young Sterling claimed self-defense.

Yes, last year.
Also, the shooting was old news. Donald Sterling basically tried to bribe the detective while intimidating him. Corrupted as fuck.
This isn’t the first time the NBA has moved to oust Donald Sterling as Clippers owner.
A special committee of six NBA owners unanimously recommended Sterling’s removal in September 1982. Created after Sterling’s aborted attempt to relocate the franchise from San Diego to Los Angeles, the committee grew concerned about late payments by the Clippers to players, hotels, program printers and others. The NBA had previously sued Sterling to block that move.
But much of the controversy revolved around an audiotape.

"I'm a good member who made a mistake and I'm apologizing and I'm asking for forgiveness," stated Donald Sterling in an interview with Anderson Cooper.
Cooper managed to land a sit-down with the billionaire owner of the Los Angeles Clippers. The interview will air Monday on CNN.

I'm still kind of annoyed that this douchbag's racist remarks took the focus away from Cliven Bundy.
He made a mistake. Singular.
That's how you know he's only sorry he got caught. "I'm sorry about this 1 thing I did. This 1 bad thing...I apologize for."

Force a sell of the team, relocate them to Seattle. Everyone wins.

2013, the press reported that current Clippers guard JJ Redick had an abortion contract with girlfriend Vanessa Lopez. When she became pregnant, the contract stipulated, she would have to have an abortion, and Redick would then have to “maintain a social and/or dating relationship” with her for a year or pay her $25,000. When she refused to have an abortion, he pressured her to do so. So far, there have been no repercussions.
What in the actual fuck.

That's why I can't stand Redick, but a lot of people here have tried to defend his disgusting actions.
Sterling sounds senile.
Having seen senility and dementia in person many times (my mom has been a nursing home director for 20 years)...he is exhibiting a lot of the signs and symptoms. Before he could hide his thoughts and keep them to himself to an extent, now he can't control his thought process and what comes out of his mouth. The way he jumps and stutters, the way he interrupts himself, how fast he can get mad and either himself or something else, how he is trying to constantly pin the blame on one individual (you know like those old folk who always think someone is stealing from them?)...he has dementia.
