By DY_nasty Go To PostThis has escalated in part because of the possibility of such an intervention.Well I will definitely admit i missed that news.
We're voting on it. Dumb af imo. Validating a fraction of the protestors and inflaming things at the same time.
By HasphatsAnts Go To PostWhen has anyone said that? There is plenty to criticize about China and on their broader handling of the situation in HK in particular.
Fact of the matter is, what are the protesters looking to accomplish? How are they looking to achieve their goals?
What they believe is that by protesting and grinding Hong Kong to a halt, that China has to intervene and respond because Hong Kong is irreplaceable. But we've seen that the CPC feel comfortable not responding at all because they know that there is no threat of contagion to the mainland because protesters themselves have ensured that that would never happen. If you can't build a coalition, what are you burning shops and punching office workers for?
I have always wondered this, what is the endgame for HK protesters? I mean aren't we thirty years away or so from the supposed way of life agreement being over anyway?
By Kidjr Go To PostI have always wondered this, what is the endgame for HK protesters? I mean aren't we thirty years away or so from the supposed way of life agreement being over anyway? This is a problem with many movements, different people in the same movement want different things. The only thing you can really point to being somewhat official are the five demands.
I always just assumed that it would be a total win for them if they could maintain their current "part of China but still separate" status.
damn i overuse quotes like a mofo
By diehard Go To PostIt's all across the internet (i wasn't referencing SLAENT there).
If you're whole point is that these protests won't do any good, then make that point. The whole "the western media doesn't understand and won't report about innocent people being hurt" (me paraphrasing with quotes) point seems unnecessary.
I mean damn, i'll probably agree.
No but that is integral to the story. You can't have a "these protests are not achieving their goals" story without expounding on the reasons, and one of the key reasons here is that they've done a great job alienating those who could actually enforce change for them by flying the old colonial flags and calling for likes of Trump and Ted Cruz.
There were numerous dissenting voices in the mainland on Wechat barely 5 years ago. You don't see them now but that doesn't mean they've changed their minds. Yet somehow the viewpoint on HK is almost unanimous. Tremendous own goal.

Ultimately what they want is universal suffrage, but there's no legal mechanism in Basic Law to make that change. To rewrite Basic Law, the decision has to come from the central government in Beijing, and I doubt HK gets a better deal than what they were offered in 2014.

Literally says the ultimate aim is universal suffrage.

At an unspecified time and date with no mechanism in place to compel the CPC to stick to a time table.

Twitter seemed shocked that Shaq would break company lines and Charles would support the employer and I’m like ehhh???
By Fenderputty Go To PostTwitter seemed shocked that Shaq would break company lines and Charles would support the employer and I’m like ehhh???Remember when Charles Barkley was supposed to lead a show on ESPN talking about the black experience and bringing people together? What happened to that? And then he got rekt by someone at a live event regarding that show.
Seem people bring up his Support for Jones in Alabama. Which is like ... ok, was Alabama extorting the league and it’s affiliates monetarily?
Speaking of monetary motivation, you know Charles needs NBA / TNT cause he’s lost so much money gambling. Shaq could lose both and be just fine.
