City had years of brutal draws in the CL. If you get into Pot 1, you miss out on the top tier teams in the CL and then hope for a bit of luck. Lyon have finished 3rd in the French league two years in a row and are an excellent opponent, Atalanta finished 3rd in Serie A last year (and are 3rd right now), Hoffenheim were 3rd in the Bundesliga the previous season -- these are high quality teams. Shakhtar are a difficult opponent every year. Schalke was fortunate but when you finish first in the group stage you are set up for a decent draw usually. If we want to talk luck, talk Spurs and the VAR fuckery in our game with them.
If you actually win your domestic cup games, *shock* you play more games. City are taking the competitions seriously and it's up to the other top teams to do the same or they can go out early and then let City play a "lesser" opponent instead of them. There were 3 PL opponents in both the League Cup and FA Cup runs last season and if City get to the final of the League Cup this year it will probably mean they've played 3 PL teams again. Out of 5 opponents.

...well, obviously, if they didn't finish 3rd last season they wouldnt be in the CL, sans Hoffenheim. That's the minimum a team needs to get to be in the competition the next season.
