By Gabyskra Go To PostNot conservative Republicans, but actually the people who called themselves progressives back then already. Teddy Roosevelt and Wilson for instance. Schlesinger Jr is the usual read on the subject.I was thinking of 19th century liberalism (more in line with the modern international understanding of the word) but you're right, pre-WWI progressivism was distinct. I did err in calling them Republicans though. Force of habit.

Trump:
I think we're officially in the "yeah, I'm a fascist" part of Trump's campaign.
"We've got a problem: Muslims. The president's one of 'em. You know he's not even from this country…When can we get rid of [Muslims]?"
Trump:
"We're going to be looking at a lot of things."

The House passed two abortion-related bills Friday, including one that would strip federal health-care funding from Planned Parenthood for one year, but it remains unclear whether the votes would appease conservatives who have threatened a government shutdown over the organization.

This whole "Obama is a Muslim" thing isn't new to Trump. He's just being more coy about it. Several years ago, in fact, he was at the forefront of the movement.

I don't care about that anymore. I care more about Trump responding to: "when are going to get rid of/kill the Muslims?" with "we're looking into everything right now."
I prefer presidential candidates to be able to take stances against state sponsored mass murder of religious minorities.
I'm still waiting for Carson to advocate blacks shouldn't be in charge of this nation. I know he is thinking it.
"I'm one of the good ones!" Aka the Bill Cosby talk, and well, look how he actually turned out to be.
The irony of hating on another religion from a country founded by dudes kicked out of the Church of England.
This might be the worst response I've read to a controversy this cycle:
http://www.politico.com/story/2015/09/ben-carson-muslim-president-no-apology-213871
You're a fucking coward and loser, Ben.
"He was thinking like someone who loves America first, who wants to protect America. He understands that there are tenets of Islam that hates Jews, that kills homosexuals, will kill Muslims, do not advocate belief and value systems that made America into the country that it is today," business manager and conservative radio host Armstrong Williams told CNN's Alisyn Camerota on "New Day."
When Camerota mentioned that those views apply only to extremists, Williams said his candidate is "not trying to be politically correct."
"Dr. Carson was asked his opinion. His opinion was, the timing at this point, he would not vote for a Muslim in the White House. This is why he's not a politician. This is why he's not trying to be politically correct. This is America. It's a place of freedom of speech," he said. "It is not an issue of religion, it is an issue of one's belief system, of how they will govern."
Camerota then read part of Article VI of the Constitution, which mandates that no religious test can be used against someone running for office.
"Dr. Carson, Alisyn, as you're alluding to, was not speaking about religion, not at all. He is like most Americans in their hearts and they search themselves and they ask questions. If you see what's going on in the world today, and you ask questions, if you search yourself deeply and ask yourself, at this time in the history of our country, in the question that was posed to him, which he asked and answered truthfully, is that he would not be comfortable with someone who shares the Islamic Muslim faith in the White House," Armstrong said. "And if Dr. Carson, because of his love for America, he is willing, everything is not about winning the White House for him, it's about standing up for what he believes in, telling the truth, even if it makes CNN and others uncomfortable. It is what he believes."
"It is not about Christian, it is not about Jew, it is not about religion. It is about what one believes and what they would advocate if they became president of these United States," Williams continued, adding that Carson "will not take it back."

i'd love to sweep religion under the rug for every candidate to be honest--but yea, we're probably a good 100 to 200 years from that being a majority accepted opinion in this country

We're calling you a bigoted asshole and asking you to logically defend your idiotic opinion.
Rule #1 of when someone throws out "it's just like, my opinion, man. First Amendment, bro" is to let them know that the First Amendment also gives another person the right to call them an asshole for that opinion and to thoroughly dissent.

Sure, not saying he's out yet. But I feel this was just a stopgap for them to get some mindspace in the eyes of the public at large.
Walker dropped out because he had no choice. He literally got less than 1% in the latest post-debate polls and the donations were drying up. After tanking like that on the national stage he'll probably never be a viable Presidential candidate again; he's this cycle's Rick Perry. The 14th Amendment flip floppery was his "oops" moment.
I suspect that Rubio imagines himself as a Republican Obama and wants to go for it right now, but he'd probably settle for VP.

Bingo. People throwing out complaints about "PC culture" are usually following up or prefacing bigoted and intolerant opinions about others. But as soon as they are criticized they want some sort of blanket immunity and complain that they're criticized.
It's like, don't you get it douchebag? If you can insult others, we can insult you.
I have Rubio as my establishment dark horse with the crazy part of the party eventually settling on a "not bush."

It's amazing that Jeb had to pull out a Reagan/Bush T shirt. Like people werent going to notice he conveniently jumped over Bush/Quayle and Bush/Cheney.
Way to advocate for your vice presidency dude

Many Muslims are conservative family values types. I know that there are several who are prominent business owners in the OKC metro. Certainly some opportunity there for the GOP if it wasn't for the "unfit to be president" and "outlaw your religion" sentiment.
This election cycle is doing irreparable harm to the chances of Republicans in national elections. Not that I have a problem with that.
I personally think the "not sure" responses are even better. How can one not be sure. More like, "yeah we're pretty cool with Islam being illegal, we just don't want to own up to it."
i'm in an echo chamber here--but again, increasing concern about the amount of press that comment has gotten compared to quotes like "he kept us safe".
That's because JEB BluthBush isn't gonna win shit this election so they ignore that comment because he doesn't matter right now. Welcome to the media cycle.
Jeb! releases anti-regulation policy suggestions one day after CEO is jailed 28 years for selling poisoned peanuts and after the Volkswagen recalls so this campaign is going well:

By KingGondo Go To PostLetting their bigotry and Christian fundamentalism get in the way of what could be one of their voting blocs, just like they did with Hispanics. This is an interesting article on the subject.
Before 9/11 most Muslims voted Republican (they went big for Bush in 2000) because, as you said, they were predisposed towards fiscal and social conservatism. Then they started getting the minority scapegoat treatment and the rest is history.
So much emphasis is placed on the Hispanic vote these days because of its size, but in recent years Republicans have been quietly hemorrhaging support among smaller groups like Muslims and Asians. Those demographics don't seem important nationally, but they add up in some key battleground states and they also wield a disproportionate amount of financial power.

If you defend the Confederate Flag and demonize all Muslims as hating America for not voting Republican call all transgender men and women "mentally ill and deserving of prayers", then you'll get fucking Nazis as fans.
To put it in the National Review's own words:
“Date Rape,” by Sublime. Sublime - 40oz. to Freedom ; buy CD on Amazon.com Many liberals probably think this song blames the victim; conservatives will see it offering a bit of common sense: “The moral of the date rape story / It does not pay to be drunk and horny.”
They were asking for it.

When liberals complain about that song it's because the rapist is eventually punished with prison rape and portrayed as deserving it.

No.
By ViewtifulJC Go To Postso ya'll niggas believe in God or nah
A first mover God is unlikely, but a possibility like the all the rest (multiverse, matrix, etc). I don't think any specific religion has it correct even if there were to be a first mover though.
Used to. I was in a choir for a year in my early teens. Now, like Marx, I think religion exists to fill a void, it is a creation of people out of a necessity to not be so alienated from a fulfilling and meaningful life.
By ViewtifulJC Go To Postso ya'll niggas believe in God or nahYea but not like he's watching me wipe
I'd like to think a God exists out there somewhere. It's comforting to have that conviction. But I don't really count on it, so I treasure the things I have. Friends and family are all I need.
Maybe things will change when I experience loss (I haven't yet, thank the spaghetti monster), but until then, I don't really think about it.

I'm think the god question popped up due to Carson's denial of the Big Bang and evolution. I think the better question is, "are science and faith incompatible?" I think a majority of the people don't think they are.
I will say that the most vocal people about atheism right now are total dickheads and I'm thinking of trying to become prominent in the atheist community just to counter and mock their hatred of women, transgender women, and Muslims.
The public atheist community doesn't seem to have much voice at all though in Utah so it would be hard to become prominent through speeches and debates (which is where I'm best at).
...And, of course, being able to will yourself to prominence is obviously an arrogant idea, lol.
