It's not enough that the Dutch spell Mats wrong, but that video was cringy. De Ligt may be one of the most talented players Ajax have had, but they are treating him like some kind of legend.
I honestly think our social media team is fucking top right now. The quality of our video content is out of this world these days. These guys and girls need a raise.

Firstly, his name is spelled Matthijs de Ligt. With two t's that is yes. Foreign media need to get with the programme. Secondly, yes, he is a legend at the club. Just because we live in a world where a richer club will snatch away your players after 2 or 3 years doesn't mean we can't have new club legends anymore. He's the youngest player to ever start a Europa League final, the youngest captain to ever start a CL semis and the youngest player to reach 100 games for us. In Dutch we have a saying that goes "what is good, comes quickly". That's basically De Ligt in every sense of the word. He came along at the age of 16 and we couldn't think of our team without him anymore at the age of 17. He's a natural born leader who has been the key (together with Frenkie) to our recent success. Above all very loved by the fanbase. At 17 he walked up to our fans in Lyon when we reached the Europa League final to start a song like he's been doing that for many years.
He is a legend.
No one cares about these Delmonte signings let’s be honest
Only three weeks left now for the EPL boys to get players in. I think we can go again next season with just Sess if we have to, but only if Llorente stays or someone fills his place.

Think De Ligt, that captains an Ajax side to a winning title and lead his team to a CL semifinal is of course a legend. Do people forget that Ajax is an Eredivisie club or something.
Wonder how the social media would be like when Fernando Torres went to Liverpool though. What he did for Atletico far eclipse De Ligt for Ajax.

*domestic double m8
And Torres is a bit different of course, he had 5 full seasons as a starter at Atleti. De Ligt had 2 and a handful of games in his first season at 16 years old. Frenkie even less so, only 4 games in his first year, just over 20 in his second and just this last season he finally started every game. That's just how the market works these days if you have players that talented, they won't stay for 4 or 5 years anymore. In the zeroes we at least enjoyed players like Sneijder, Vertonghen and Van der Vaart a bit longer. The only players these days we can enjoy for more than 2 years are the ones that will never reach the true powerhouses in Europe. That's the sad and simple truth for Ajax supporters. And so many more clubs of course.
By Linius Go To PostSo against one of the above teams we will start our Champions League season for 2019/2020 in early august.
hahah, this is such a dutch sentence.

He is a legend.
I don't know, in that case I should consider Donnarumma a legend as well. Debuted as a 16 year old and has been saving our asses consistently for 3 years since then. If he had a competent team ahead of him and a proper coach he would've easily won several trophies.
But no, I don't think he is, just because of the short time he has been here. Maybe my definition of a legend is just different.
But I get your point.

The big commercial deals just keep coming. Check out that quality formation that clearly shows how much effort they put into this one.

Yeah there's not really a guideline to what makes someone a legend at the club. I also consider Lasse Schöne to be a legend at Ajax. Of course he's nowhere near the talent of some of the players we've had over the past but it's incredible how he arrived at the club as a rotation player on a free transfer and he's still here starting games and helping our young players. Turned out to be a true Ajax man, and I hope he will finish his career at our club. A guy that sometimes lost his place in the team but never complained about it to the press. Just put in the work needed to get back in there. Multiple summers we thought that would be the end of him starting games for us, untill he made his way back yet again scoring beautiful goals in the process.
So I guess you can just look at it in different ways yes.
Any which way this goes or was intended, it's all completely moronic, which I suppose is in keeping with Paddy Power's "wahey-lads-banter" MO.

Parading players that are leaving after 2 years is weird but oh well, if it makes you happy. What really made me wonder was an interview with Overmars in which he said Arsenal should sell Özil and buy Ziyech, as he'd be only half as expensive. I mean, I'm probably not getting the good old Dutch humor here but like, maybe he shouldn't say that? You already sold two important players, an Ajax official offering another player up for cheap, even as a joke, seems like you want to cash in on your current successful team and don't care to compete again. Maybe it's just the culture but I would have lost it if Zorc had offered up Auba or Reus when Micky, Hummels and Gündogan left for example.
My takeaway from the Overmars quote was how he seemed to think that Ozil has suitors, which is obviously nonsense.

I don't know in which sense de ligt isn't a legend. 3 years on the first team, bringing the club to an el finale and a cunt hair away from the CL finale, with a squad that had no business going that far.
Christian Poulsen had two seasons at Copenhagen and wasn't even a youth product of the club, and I sure saw him as a legend when he left, even though he did far less. Scoring against Brøndby in one of your first matches to win the league will do that though.
Of course if you are one or two levels above everyone else in the league at such a young age, you gotta move on.

former Roma POW Osvaldo scored a goal against Roma to end their unbeaten home run and seal our 102 points season
J Legend
Marcelo Zalayeta, a sub, knocked both Barca and Madrid on our way to the final.
J Legend
lots of other examples, you don't need to spend your whole career or something at the club. A simple act of J-ness will suffice.

You'll have to see that bit about Ziyech in context though. Let me say upfront, I don't like that he advertised Ziyech like that. But you'll have to take in account that Ajax already agreed to make a transfer possible last summer if the right club comes along. For a fair transfer fee that is, we weren't gonna ask much more than he's worth because he stayed another season at the club for that promise. Then journalists start asking him if there's any news about Ziyech currently, everyone expects him to leave after all. To which Overmars says it's surprisingly quiet and then he says the Arsenal bit. It was weird seeing him so vocal about selling Ziyech, could have done without that extra sentence. But in the grand scheme of things it's not that bad. For now it looks like he's even staying by the way. No club to his liking has come by yet, so that's nice. Would be my favourite transfer news of the summer if he doesn't leave.
Other than that Overmars is doing a great job for the most part. Brought the club financial stability and brought in a lot of good players over the years. We're at a point where we could manage an actual gap financially towards PSV as well. Which would be a big deal. Dutch media love to write about us as the Dutch Bayern these days. I think that's a bit of a stretch just yet. But if we manage the club responsibly and keep making the right choices that's a road we can take up on ultimately.
But being proud of our players going to the biggest clubs in Europe for a decent fee is nothing weird. If anything, it's us being realistic. Financially we will never close the gap. There is no way to keep our talented players longer in the Eredivisie. Apart from the money our league just isn't that attractive. If we were a country with 80 million people like you guys things would be a lot different. But this is just the harsh reality we have to deal with. So yes, I rather see us taking pride in selling our youth products to big clubs than anything else.
