- This team certainly isn’t bad. If they play poorly, it won’t be because a lack of talent. The loss against Atlanta was largely Coach Fisher’s fault. His combinations of players are strange, and what’s more, as different lineups struggle together, he leaves them in together way too long. This allows an opponent to pull away and for the Knicks’ deficit to become too great to overcome. Fisher needs to react and switch things up the moment he (and everyone else watching) senses things going poorly. Make changes early and often as necessary. For what it’s worth, it easy to see that one of the team’s best five-somes (Jeriant Grant, Langston Galloway, Carmelo Anthony, Kristaps Porzingis, and Robin Lopez) didn’t get nearly enough time together.Bolded is important to me. Thoughts.
- For the second night in a row, Carmelo Anthony struggled to get going. The team is failing to feed him the ball. The triangle is obviously all about movement and distribution, but New York needs to isolate, at least a little bit, to help their star cook. When Anthony was given opportunities to convert corner jumpers, he looked great. Otherwise, the star was off-balance.
Agreed with all of it. It was noticeable that Fisher looked pretty confused yesterday. The rotations damn near reminded me of some Mike Woodson shit. Grant had 7 assists yesterday, and 7 rebounds. Kid sees the court pretty well. Galloway is the ideal lead guard for the team, as well. Calderon is getting minutes only because he's a veteran with a decent contract, but he needs to be relegated to Prigioni-status and play no more than 10-15 minutes max. He's hurting the defensive intensity of the squad on the hardwood, because he's getting blown by. Even Melo has stepped up his D a lot, active hands, swatting the ball, etc.
Afflalo should help a bit, but I don't believe in puttering my woes on one injured player, especially when he isn't a superstar.
All in all, Phil is probably going to ream Fish out. If he hasn't already.

So the knicks are supposedly drafting Jimmer Fredette to the D-League team.
Right now he sucks but if they could maybe put him in that Steve Kerr role in the triangle they might be able to get some value out of him.

Hello.
Yes, I'm bumping this bitch again. New thread title and all. Other thread is moving quick as hell, so I felt like centralizing discussion here.
I saw some video of Noah on IG working out on the court. He's looking pretty good, footwork is still very much there. I'm looking forward to seeing contact play from him too. I still think I'm going to miss Lopez in some ways, but what I always liked about Noah (and conversely hated when he was a match up) was how he wasn't afraid to bang bodies. Lopez had a few critical issues: when he was guarded near the rim, he was too scared to break through the defense or the arms above him and go straight up. The other issue was that he was a poor passer, and when he panicked near the rim, he threw passes away. On the other hand, Noah jumped straight up to find the rim. And Noah is also a significantly better passer, which goes without saying. Even in his injury plagued season last year he averaged 6.2 assists per game (per 36), 8.3 (per 48). That ranks him as the best passing center in the league.
I'm really excited to see Courtney Lee play alongside Derrick Rose. He's not a player who demands the ball much, averages only 9 shots per game. 40% from 3PT last season. 47.5% 2PT. He plays away from the ball effectively and I believe he ran more miles per season than any other player or second? Solid perimeter defender too.
But my excitement also has reservations. I firmly believe a time-managed Rose is still a maaaajor upgrade and probably even a top 10 PG over what we had last year and will help us overall. But God forbid Rose has to sit out games (or even sit out with an injury), I'm not confident in Jennings being the player and play maker to comfortably and efficiently fit in. And then who plays behind Jennings? A rookie? Sasha? Lance? Melo? Holiday? It's all sorts of silliness that can become a disaster. The bench has plenty of capable bigs, but losing Galloway (a combo guard) hurts a lot. Sure the Knicks medical staff is probably the best in the NBA, but the risk is still so high. And our cap is pretty much tapped out. Yes, the triangle/Horny system doesn't require the traditional guard, but it does require two extremely capable guards playing together. I like Brandon Jennings, he's quick and scrappy, but he's also a mildly better JR Smith who has the potential to shoot you out of games.
Let's talk Knicks-SLAENT.

By AlphaSnacks Go To PostHello. My issue with this is Knicks seemed to want to clear salary space and upgrade at PG. They... sorta did? I don't care how it's spun, Lopez to Noah is a sizeable downgrade unless Noah manages to rediscover some of his Thibodeux form. He had a serious injury that I'm happy he's almost fully recovered from, but I have no idea what Noah we will get and that's worrisome.

That's another reason Galloway leaving hurts, the team needs a defending wing on the court at all times with Rose (Holiday is another good defender).

I know they are not great but Randle, Baker, and Plumlee looked solid as hell in SL. Especially Baker when being asked to defend and play off the ball. Randle was also very nice shooting and getting passed off to cutters outside shooters.
It's early but I would be more than ok with Randle and Baker being third string on the final roster and getting some burn throughout the season.

Yeah, so basically we went from having a hole at the 2 spot...to have a major hole at the 1 and 2 spot on the bench. We've got a plethora of forwards and centers, but the likelihood of having our guards sit out are going to be high.
I have confidence that Noah will be fine, though. Idk why, I just do. We'll be relying more on his passing than his scoring anyway.
As for the bench, Baker needs to seriously work on his dribble. But I guess playing and moving off the ball is a strength of his, so it suits him well to play in this offense. I hadn't heard the best about Plumlee, except that he was 'strong'? Whatever that means.
By AlphaSnacks Go To PostI hadn't heard the best about Plumlee, except that he was 'strong'? Whatever that means. The Plumlee family is defined by their athleticism. They all jump really high. They have a sister who plays volleyball too.
The Knick bench is actually really really weak unless Hernangomez and Mindy are NBA ready ballers.

I mean, Lin is making 31 million more and is going to be starting. That's not really saying much of Jennings ability to be a backup for 15 minutes or whether or not 5 million on one year is a good contract.

Nah Baker actually looks better and if they stay healthy he could potentially get regular minutes at the 2 behind Lee. Randle would only get minutes when PG's were injured or missing days and even then the Knicks could go after a vet instead.
It's early. Sasha might cut by the end of training camp is Randle looks good enough and he can move to the FO or bench.
Still not a fan of the bench. Unless three guys out of Ndour/Jennings/LT/Willy/O Quinn have really good years for their position I see them as struggling pretty heavily...
Problem with restructuring your starting lineup every year as Phil has done is you're not spending time improving the bench with starter quality players.

Yeah, I still think this bench is going to be a major issue too. Losing Galloway is going to be a huge bust for us.
Not having a strong bench can be rememdied at least. Not having strong starters hurt more... which is why the injury concerns cast a shadow on the whole Knicks season. If I would you Rose/Noah/Jennings/etc. all play over 72 games in 2016 and the Knicks pickup another defender for the bench in February... how many games would you think the Knicks win? In this current East they be a lock for .500, 47 games? 50?
But we know even if by miracle that happens, they'll proably play hurt and at reduced ability most of them...
But we know even if by miracle that happens, they'll proably play hurt and at reduced ability most of them...
I think Jackson, Mills, Hornacek and the Knicks medical staff are extremely smart people who will know how to manage these players and their time...aka the Pop approach. Have Rose and Noah rest a few games per month and I say their seasons should be healthy - as you said, basically sit out about 10-12 games for rest. So if we're going to do a best case and worst case guess:
My guesses are:
52 best.
30 worst.
Most probable? In the 40s somewhere. I genuinely think our bench will cost us games and our starters will get spent drying to dig us out of holes, which will be a contributor to our losses. But then again, as you said, the East is looking rather bad this year. Nets look downright awful. Heat are likely to tank. Wiz may start regressing, but still competitive. Raptors will be a fair quality team. Cavs are an ECF shoe-in. I think the Celtics will surprise people (especially if either YNB or Blake trades occur). Hawks should be solid, but who knows what cancer Dwert brings with him. All in all, the EC leaves a lot of room for the Knicks to get their shit in order and actually end up a top 5 seed.

Tyson Chandler played great that one season and got a new deal with the Suns they probably regret. It was Phil's first trade and he eventually flipped Calderon and Robin Lopez into Derrick Rose...... Your overthinking it.

Idk from what I read the knicks are going to try and have 2 starters in at all times. Outside of Jennings (who is there sixth man/off the bench offense). The rest of the guys are defensive minded subs whose purpose is to make their opponent work to score. Its not a great situation, but its not horrible either. The bench won't be able to cover for injuries outside of possible rose, but if asked to be subs only it should hold up.

And yet he kept saying for two seasons "I know what I can do, I appreciate the coach having faith in me" blah blah blah.
Like, it's cool if you think a girl is out of your league after you tried super hard for 2 years to date her - but that admission doesn't really mean much after the fact.
Yeah, Calderon specifically was saying he has experience, he's not worried, etc etc. Now he's singing a different tune. What a bitch.
BS. Everyone knew he was the worst starting PG in the league. He did too, but it wouldn't have helped for him to say otherwise as he was put in that position. This isn't a character issue now, it's just the truth comes out eventually.
