By Linius Go To PostYeah that’s too bad man, in the end I will only buy a watch to actually enjoy it. If it’s just sitting inside a safe it won’t mean much to me. Well unless it’s some family piece of course. He's wearing the shit out of his Seiko and a €70 AliExpress watch though!
And luckily, like people mentioned, most people don’t know too much about watches. You’ll have to know them to see the value. Unless it’s a big ass shiny Rolex indeed.
Why can’t we just enjoy the nice things.
I'd be equally depressed if my Swatch was stolen. There are many like it but this one is mine.

I got engaged over the weekend and my now almost Mother-In-Law gave me a Seiko Ribbed Dial Solar Watch (SNE489). It’s so nice.
By reilo Go To PostVery classy. You gonna wear it to the wedding? That would be good, and it would match really well :)
So I'm more seriously looking into watches as of late. I can finally free up some budget to buy something really nice. Want to keep things under 1000 euros. One of the watches I've came across is a beautiful Hamilton Intra-Matic. The more I look at it the more I realize it really mirrors my current Daniel Wellington design wise. But in every way imaginable it has a much greater quality to it of course.
Mainly posting this here to see if you guys have some brands/models to recommend considering the above stylistic approach. Also bearing in mind that I have a rather small wrist. I really enjoy straps but not saying no to bracelets right out of the box.

Every year I keep saying this is the year I’m getting my Rolex. Now I’m wondering if availability will ever improve. Seems like Rolex likes to play games about buying watches you don’t want to get the one you do want.

The brand couldn't be any more different in terms of history and philosophy but they also make good dress watches built with quality parts and craftsmanship.

The dial on that is supposedly very nice. I haven't seen one in person but that's what everyone says.

Orient makes really nice bang for your buck watches. If you are looking to spend around a 1000 then you could see if you fancy the Seiko Presage and Alpinist lines. Tissot is also in that tier but I'm just not a fan of their designs. Take a look at the collections from Stowa, Sinn, and Yema.
Now size. I too don't have a particularly big wrist. Give or take 17cm around. The best thing would be to try the watches out and see how they wear. Visit the Beijenkorf and try out the Hamilton watches. Take note of the dial size and most importantly the lug to lug distance. For me dial size of 38-40mm looks great and a lug to lug of up to 48mm. Anything beyond really depends on the watch and strap.
I wouldn't worry too much about straps and bands because you can swap them for something else on the cheap.
Seiko Presage did catch my eye yeah, some nice designs to find there. Will take a look at those three brands you listed lastly, never heard of any of them.
And I was looking for dealers in my area. Was hoping to find a local jewelry store that carries Hamilton. There seem to be a few but they don't seem to have this specific model. Of course they can order anything you'd like, but I don't want them to order something for me for which I don't know if I want it yet. And then I pretty quickly ended up at Bijenkorf indeed. So I'll probably just try to make a shortlist of some different models in different sizes I can try on in Bijenkorf to see how I like it. To get a better idea of the size that suits me. My currenty watch is 40mm, the Hamilton above here is 38mm. So I think we're in the same sweetspot there. Was already reading up on watch measurements a lot to know what to look for exactly. It's an exciting journey to learn more about watches and what makes them so special.

Bracelet with male end links. Female end links wear smaller; the male end links protrude and effectively increase the lug to lug distance.
Nato straps add bulk to your watch. The strap goes underneath the watch case twice so add a couple of millimetres to the thickness. Looks bigger on your wrist.
Compare it to a single pass perlon strap which wears much smaller.
Just an illustration how you can play around with straps. If you're concerned the watch is too big, you can opt for a leather strap or perlon. To increase the bulk, pick a metal bracelet or Nato strap. If you ask me, the first pic is on the edge of looking okay for me. Might be a little too big.
I know. I was aware when I bought it 6 years ago as well. You’re just paying for a name that doesn’t even signify anything really. I got one pretty cheap though and I still like the design. I need to service my Seiko and Armani some time though. It’s something I’ve been putting of in my student years as a money thing. The DW serviced me well for those years. Even with not giving a fuck about it and having survived many drunken nights and weekends it still looks decent. I’m surprised honestly.
So since I was getting into the rabbithole we call watches I just couldn't hold myself back from buying something sweet already. This purchase also means it will be much easier to think long and hard about my first somewhat more luxurious watch. I decided to jump on a Seiko 5 (SNKL23). A really nice automatic piece with a black dial and day/date. Still not a big fan of bracelets. And especially on the low end of watches they're just not that comfortably build either. So I decided to order a nice leather strap from Colareb to go with it. I was a bit anxious to find out if the colors would match as good as I hoped for in real life. Today I received the watch and luckily they look great together.
Aside from this I also went to my local jewelry store to have my old Seiko Chronograph quartz serviced. The battery will be replaced and they'll check if everything is still okay. It's roughly 12 years old now so I think it should function fine with a new battery. I ordered some cheaper straps from Barton, one nato and one silicon to go with it. I intend to wear it when I'm out and about and know that lots of alcohol and not so careful behaviour come into play. In two weeks I'm going out camping with some friends, so hopefully the bands have arrived by then.
And last but not least I visited the Seiko boutique in Amsterdam today. Was helped by a really nice guy taking his time despite knowing I wasn't gonna buy anything today. Was glad to have that kind of experience in a luxury store. Tried on a presage 40,5mm which looked simply stunning. Also had the chance to try on a 42mm Seiko just to see how it would look. I felt like it's right on the edge of what's possible with my wrist. But maybe 40mm is just the sweetspot for me. I also hopped by a big warehouse to try on a 42mm Hamilton Khaki Field. And to be honest, it didn't move me much. It looked fine, but it didn't much for me yet.

It's very nice. And yea I cosign the leather strap -> bracelets. Good looking on the rec where you got yours.
My good old Seiko is back. Battery was replaced under pressure so water resistance should still be fine. These are the two bands I ordered from Barton. A blue silicon and a black canvas. Both quick release so I'm gonna take both with me on the camping trip I'm about to go on. I think both work out nicely. Defintely want to try a nato on this too.

Didn't realise Casio were selling the metal Casioaks yet and at £180, all sold out now. I'd be tempted to buy the women's version in black owing to my dainty wrists.
Also looking at the GM-S5600-1ER, another women's watch but it's still huge.

By Linius Go To PostYeah I really like that Casioak but it’s simply too big for my wrists. The ladies version I was looking at last night was (afaik) still bigger than the Casio Royale, which is also fairly hefty.
Do you know anyone selling growth hormone?
By Celcius Go To PostDo you think Rolex’s will ever stop being so hard to get? Back in 2015 it was much easier.Doubt it. Rolex and AD have a good thing going for them. This is the new normal
It honestly just puts me off the brand. I don’t mind high prices etc. But making your customers feel lucky they are allowed to spend several thousands on your product just feel wrong. Especially since they can easily produce more if they wanted to. It does provide funny memes on the watch reddit circlejerk though.
If I’m ever able to purchase a luxury watch it will most likely be something from Grand Seiko. Those spring drives are so dang sexy.

I have started to pay attention to other people's watches and I try to figure out what they are but my eye for detail on this isn't that good yet.

Be super friendly to the store guys and go out of your way you are not trying to resell them, may take a few months but they'll eventually start to call you.

I had a Baby Tuna on my wrist today but I ended up not getting it. The struggle was real though.
If my impulses always got the better of me then I would probably have about twenty watches in my collection.

If Swatch didn't exist then I'd put an SKX in my collection. Heck, I would get one of those gaudy Street Fighter editions.
I haven't seen the Captain Willard yet in person but judging from the lug size of the King Turtle, it's probably not to my taste. I won't know until I actually wear it though. That's always how it is.
I don't have a diver yet but that's why I'm eyeing this piece in particular. Going to regret it when it's gone for sure.
By Anya Taylor-Sad Go To PostThose are damn cool and they're strap monsters to boot.Sorry, I remembered wrong, my dad has a Seiko Monster! The Baby Tuna is huge comparatively! That shroud adds a lot of thiccness. A lug to lug of 48mm is my max and Seiko watches generally wear pretty small because of the curved lugs. You can always fiddle a little with the straps and bracelets too. This is a nice tool regarding Seiko sizes. https://www.strapcode.com/pages/seiko-divers-watch-dimension

Captain Willard wears much smaller than that Baby Tuna you tried. Case is a bit bigger than the SKX.
Really? Maybe my wrist is just big because it's strange when you say that the Baby Tuna is huge comparatively. It's really hard to fathom that the Captain Willard is smaller too. I really need to see it in person now.
Have you ever tried the King Turtle?

I've considered this but never tried it on. Think the case diameter with the shroud would be overkill, and the shroud is removable. All the other similar Seiko watches with the shroud are even bigger with larger diameters and lug to lug distances. I wish I could pull off a Prospex PADI with shroud or an Arnie.
Related rant: the Seiko terminology is really confusing. There are so many similar watches from different series with different specs. The Willard hommage I own should be comparable to the original Apocalypse Now Willard, case dimensions wise. I think the Seiko reissues and case derivatives are bigger? I'll look it up.
By Perfect Blue Go To PostI’ve had my eye on the Seiko Alpinist in blue for so long. May finally caveIt's a beaut. Why not the OG green?
By Perfect Blue Go To PostMuch prefer blue or black tbh.
Yeah this one looks great. Green is great too by the way, but as a blue enthusiast I support this post.
