Only thing I need in a watch is it’s capable of going surfing has a sapphire crystal glass face so it’s not a scratched mess in a year.

Oh, cool thread. Recently found interest of mine. Since last year. I'll showcase some of my collection soon-ish.

Here's the introduction to the hobby I would give.
Watch enthusiasts mostly value automatic watches, watches that are mechanical which power themselves through the motions of your arms. They're less accurate than quartz or your electronic devices, but watches are not about technology anymore. Of course, they were the smartphones of their time. But after quartz technology was commercialized in the 1970s, people thought automatic watches would disappear since everyone wanted accuracy. Eventually, what the Japanese understood first is that auto watches would survive, not as a cutting-edge piece of kit, but as a vector of emotions. They'll give you the time and some gadgety type of information depending on the model you have (date, what the moon looks like, some other time zone, etc), but automatic watches are liked by more and more people, even if they're outdated, because they do something without needing to carry a battery, because they look cool, because they remind them of a time they might not have known or because they're a legacy piece that their grandfather left them. There's a myriad of reasons. Jewelry for men is still pretty uncommon, but watches are an easy way to bring some sense of personality to your look.
Many beginners think they'll get a fancy quartz rather than a mediocre automatic. But the truth is that once you're used to automatic watches and the way the seconds hand sweep smoothly without a ticking sound, it's really hard to go back.
I heard that in the US, you have a promo at Macy's and you can get a Seiko Presage for less than 300. It's a collection of many different watches. They were my personal introduction to the hobby. I still wear mine as much as I wear others. It's hard to find a better deal. I think I read it's at 270 dollars. Here's mine.

Love this idea for a thread.
Very nice post Gaby, couldnt really put it much better myself. I love watches, by far my biggest guilty pleasure although pretty much most of my collection has gone up in value. Fortunate enough to have these beauties:
AP Royal Oak, 41mm case, my babes. Probably my fav watch tbh, not too in your face but looks very smart with both smart and casual.
Rose Gold Rolex Sky Dweller, I got this a year and half ago, my gawdy piece if you will. Love rose gold against the tone of my skin and it a dominnating watch but I dont think its a really loud piece (like say the solid gold submariner.
Not got access to all my pictures at the moment but I will be back with further pictures (I have a daytona, big bang and panari).

Audemars is the Rolls Royce or Lamborghini of watches. KidA absolute mad lad + those Rolexes, good lord.
When I was in Japan I frequently went into the Rolex store in Shinjuku to take a look at the Rolex Cellini watch with moon phases on it. Absolutely gorgeous and I love me a leather strap watch.

I am not a Rolex fan, but I do like the Cellini.
Also, I am with you. I love leather straps.
I wear an Omega De Ville.

Thanks! I really do enjoy them , the stories as to how they came into existence and the origins of there names etc.
Oooo that Cellini is lovely, not sure I could pull it off as my wrists are quite feminine or slender rather so prefer something with a little more weight. Non metal straps are underrated. Funny you say that about audamar and Rolex being the lambo and rolls royce of the watch world, I feel that way about pateks and Richard Millie (Rafa Nadal has one of my all time watches if you've seen his Richard millie).
Whoa KidJr! Nice, lad.
I've always liked watches, but I just recently got into horology. Bought my first automatic dress watch, the Orient Bambino with the grey dial:
Will be looking at a Casio G-shock and Seiko diver next.

It's the panerai luminor, will post tomorrow.
Maybe poor choice of words, I just meant owning an RM is something I aspire too once I've hit a certain level in my finances.
Yes. 15 I got three years, did half.
Fell into recruitment and became really good at it.

yeah, my friend is the CEO of the company who makes these (the actual railway clocks not the mondaine wristwatch)
Can we get a list of quality, entry level watch brands? Like up to $1000. Always loved tf out of watches but never really made it a hobby type thing. I'm familiar with the high end shit like kid has though.

I recommend stuff like Orient, Seiko, and Tissot.

Under 200: Orient.
200 to 500: Seiko.
500 to 2000: Oris, Junghans, Nomos, Hamilton, Longines, a simple vintage Omega or Girard Perregaux.
2000 to 4000: Tudor, Nomos.
4000 to 8000: Grand Seiko, Omega.
8000 to whatever: Rolex.
15000 to whatever: Audemars Piguet, Patek Philippe.

in that price range i'd recommend an Oris but honestly just find a watch you like from the respectable brands, gaby made a nice list.
my daily driver is an Oris sixty five
was around $1500
not comfortable wearing more than that daily tbh.
i also have an Omega that i got from my parents for graduating and a Rolex i inherited but i rarely wear them.

new favourite poster.
I actually worked at a watch store for about a year while in college. I understand the quality and craftsmanship that goes into them. Even back then when it was primarily just a ez job while in school.
By Epic Games Store Go To Postnot comftable wearing more than that daily tbh.Yeah, it's a discussion I've been having with myself. I have a 2k€ watch and I was never too uncomfortable with it because it's not famous. It's the one watch I wear the most. I think I'd fear wearing a Rolex but anything else, people don't know what they are.
My dream piece is a Grand Seiko. Technically, it's miles beyond anything else and I think their style is sometimes incredible. I think I would wear them because people think Seiko is some average brand when they're the best in the field IMO. Their dials... or their spring drive technology... Somewhere down the line, if I can justify not going on an incredible vacation to my S.O., I just might pull the plug.
i'm not even afraid of getting mugged or anything like that. it's more about losing or damaging it.
i'm a klutz but losing the Oris wouldn't be the end of the world.
now the inherited Rolex i could never wear casually.
