Imagine the amount of scratch James Harden is losing in China if the Rockets get blacked out.
He'd throw hands.

By HasphatsAnts Go To PostImagine the amount of scratch James Harden is losing in China if the Rockets get blacked out.I'm not saying you don't know this but for anyone that doesn't: Things like jersey sales don't go to an individual player or team, it's all shared revenue. Harden will make the same amount of money off of NBA merchandise if China decides to replace all his jerseys, the extra sales for replacement would actually give him a very very small bonus.
He'd throw hands.
Shoe contracts don't usually factor in sales either, with the obvious caveat that future potential sales lost could affect a future contract amount. There could be other China specific contracts that could affect him but i'm not aware of anything he has regarding that.
That tweet is more of an Adam Silver problem than it is a Rockets owner problem.. so i'm not sure why we have only heard from one of them.
Cant wait for the “NBA fires GM for supporting freedom“ pieces
Already seen quite a few “he’s done more than POtUS” takes

he has a lot of sponsorships in china. all the rockets do. Warriors, Lakers, Rockets are by far the three biggest fan bases in China

They gonna wait a week then sprinkle some crack in his office
They'll wait a bit then he'll "resign" and probably pick up a contract elsewhere with a lot more fine print.

last year a local bank unveiled a Harden and Capela branded (LMAO) credit card
funnily enough, they just announced they were ending the partnership yesterday, after Morey's tweet.
I'm just gonna stay laughing forever about "not a political organization" when about 10 years ago there was a lockout and constant labor disputes since then. Or you know all the obvious banning of things based on prejudice. But sure, if you live a privileged enough existence I guess I could see how a sports organization is apolitical for you.
Let's all appreciate the absurdity of having an employee tweet basically what amounts to a pro-democracy message can have such an impact. Both the reaction and level of kowtowing is insane.
lol
since silver arrived the nba has leveraged their cynical support of progressive/social justice issues (remember the insipid backpatting when sterling got kicked to the curb lmao) as a competitive advantage over say, the nfl, and huge swaths of basketball twitter like to flex about this from time to time--hopefully that'll end now

When you got Ted Cruz making you look like assclowns like he's the more progressive shitbag in terms of selling out and protests you fucked up. Whatever. This is the world we live in.
I wonder how many of us would hesitate to tell an employee to stand down and keep it private, if they were risking billions for our entity.
Am I really going to have to agree with Ted Cruz on a topic? Granted, hes' a fraudulent, self-serving asshole, but...
By blackace Go To PostMorey and Cruz need to stand up for freedoms in the states first… until that fuck emCruz yes, Morey doesnt have any obligation to stand up for whatever someone else thinks he should.
It's funny how he goes into a whole history lesson over this but does a horrible job wordsmithing the HK demands into a separatist movement
Really shows the perspective tbh.

By diehard Go To PostI believe the "separatist movement" thing is the CCP party line, which is strange because i thought Tsai was Taiwanese. There's no separation there. You don't become a native Taiwanese billionaire without being cosigned by the Chinese government.
Tsai has HK roots too.
It's 100% the party line, but it's get down or lay down with NuChina. I doubt HK's portrayal is as colorful for mainland China as it is for outside observers. And even if it was, the moral lens applied is dramatically different. I'd wager manycould tolerate would support much more deliberate action against HK to wrap up the whole ordeal already as it's more frustrating to deal with an ongoing situation than a singular event.
Either way, it's blowing up faster than Silver can get out in front of.

By diehard Go To PostCruz yes, Morey doesnt have any obligation to stand up for whatever someone else thinks he should.Obviously this isn't true as we can see by him about to get fired.
Where is the this isn't the time and place comments for Morey?
By blackace Go To PostObviously this isn't true as we can see by him about to get fired. Not going to lie i'm pretty confused by this. Morey getting fired for making a human rights related post means he is obligated to do it for all human rights issues? Are all the others in the NBA who have made statements regarding other human rights issues in the past obligated to make one about HK?

By blackace Go To PostColin takes a knee and it wasn't the time nor place but Morey a hero? Please…One is typical in-house business and the other is someone else's in-house business that's also tied to everyone's money.
Every country has some shit that they rope off...
Especially in regard to business partners. Hit that button and you take your business elsewhere. Come over to the US and say we deserved 9/11 - see how quick you end up lonely. For some perspectives and some pockets of the world you might feel like you're right to hold those views. Ijs that's not gonna work out well... And *every* country has some shit.
I'm not gonna apply particular lenses to this just to make a comparison to how we treat commentary on our own problems. The big difference there is that we have the ability to do something about our problems. We don't control shit elsewhere. You can make statements and all that but the level of influence/consequence is drastically different. That's indisputable imo
I just want to see how it plays out now tbh. I can absolutely see Silver put his hands up and say "it's above me now" because as much as he plays at being a bridge builder he isn't about to risk burning this one.
He isn't going to lose that money, not over Morey.
China is definitely flexing it's might over the NBA... Really if your business treats you like this over one tweet from one GM even after an apology then maybe you don't want that kind of partner... but them dollars make people do funny things

By reilo Go To PostThis isn't just China on their necks, but bet your ass so is Disney.Pretty sure it's got nothing to do with Disney. I think it's Tencent who has the broadcasting deal with the NBA there.
By i can get you a toe Go To PostBest take: fuck the NBA for making ted cruz look reasonable.Cruz looks reasonable only if you are completely gullible.
“If you look at the Black Lives Matter movement, one of the most disturbing things is more than one of their protests have embraced rabid rhetoric, rabid anti-police language, literally suggesting and embracing and celebrating the murder of police officers,” the Texas senator said. “That is disgraceful.”
"Cops across this country are feeling the assault. They're feeling the assault from the president, from the top on down as we see," Cruz said Monday in New Hampshire. "Whether it's in Ferguson or Baltimore, the response of senior officials of the President, of the Attorney General, is to vilify law enforcement. That is fundamentally wrong, and it is endangering the safety and security of us all."
