By Smokey Go To PostOh ok, I guess all those people who play on PC with thousands of games from multiple gens are wrong, and should listen to a programmer who just managed to figure out cross page posting.Hey at least I figured out how to actively develop something in my free time. I'm still waiting on you to figure out how to get past the Start screen of a videogame.

Nothing wrong with what Smokey said.
but it's more or less sustaining what goodwill they had left with their fans, and their lackluster first party games, with only a few lauded.

sony smart for not attempting backwards compat, their devs would build the jankiest emulator of all time

Gameplay is outdated, but it's something that you can look past.
Don't remember it as being really hard on the puzzles. Mostly just some scenes where you have to react quick.

Sony been doing BC since PS2 and Crossplay since FF11.
Problem is that PlayStation is now a cashcow and unlike Xbox, they don't have to play to hearts and minds to try and win back clout -
That means BC will only go back as far PS4 and expect proprietary extensions and grafix cards if you want to boost your power in the PS5.

DY there is banter and then there is straight up killing a man.
By DY_nasty Go To PostI'm just not gonna act like MS has been some fucking champion for BC when they only had a few dozen titles worth talking about and I'm not entirely sure if they even let you rock if you only had the disc either. When Nintendo does it and its shit, you can't turn around and ride Microsoft's nuts for the same thing. BAD FAITHThe Xbox One back compat is a lot different than playing Xbox discs on a 360 in that it's actually good emulation this time, but it does require them to get the okay of the license holders. (The 360 just ran a system level emulator that didn't directly test every game. A total mess. Stuff like Mech Assault and Kotor were totally unplayable despite being on the list.) That's why the lists are incomplete. But you can totally just put a disc in. It works as a license check the same way putting a current gen disc does. Any game that's on the list, you own the disc, it works.
And I really don't own many 360 games that didn't make it over yet. Like, pretty much the entire Microsoft catalog is there (and largely X enhanced to run at 4K). Even all the Halo games! They could've pretty easily sold people a Fable collection or told them to go buy MCC. A lot of games that got current gen ports are back compat, too, like Burnout Paradise, Assassins, BioShock.
It's far from a perfect solution, but they honor your physical discs and digital purchases and it's a lot better than not doing anything.

Will that copy of Hardline work the same way as the copy of Naruto that psy convinced you to spend American dollars on?

By reilo Go To PostWhy would you need BC if you keep making new games that people buy and like?Because people bought a lot of stuff on the PlayStation store on PS3 and they should have those purchases honored? There's really no reason my digital copy of Vagrant Story or Symphony of the Night can't run on my PS4 other than they don't care to try.
Whoda thunk the console warz would continue to be fought on the front lines by master race member #1.

There's really no reason my digital copy of Vagrant Story or Symphony of the Night can't run on my PS4 other than they don't care to try.I agree that past-purchases should be honored in that regard, but the entirety concept of BC existing because people want to play old games on new hardware is for a very small subset of users, I reckon. If Sony/MS/Nintendo were to offer the original version of a game on new hardware and you already own it, then yes, that should be honored. But for well over a decade now we have made a huge deal about the concept of BC and I honestly don't know how many people actually use it beyond an argumentative point in the perpetual console wars.

1. Death Stranding
2. the dumb Sony biker game
3. the dumb Star Wars game.
By reilo Go To PostBut for well over a decade now we have made a huge deal about the concept of BC and I honestly don't know how many people actually use it beyond an argumentative point in the perpetual console wars.I don't think this is wrong. It's something that the people buying these boxes on day one want more than most consumers. Though I do think the program has been a success on Xbox and it's always good for preserving games, and in the case of all those original Xbox games, making them play like you remember them and not how they actually ran on that hardware.
But also, I'm one of the people that fully use the back compat on the Xbox One. I've used it to play through many old games. It's really cool to dig out my Kotor II disc from 2004 and it just works still.
Apex Legends and Outer Wilds are my multiplayer and single player games of the year. I have very fond memories of the time I spent with Plague Tale, Control, Jedi: Fallen Order and Resident Evil 2, however the latter, while a brilliant remake, didn't quite live up to my lofty expectations, mostly because of the second run and how similar it was to the first playthrough. I never replay games, I don't care about uncovering everything, I only care about the core experience, so being 'forced' to play through basically the same thing twice isn't something I particularly enjoyed.
I wish I would've clicked with Sekiro, but alas. Put in a good 5-7 hours and it just didn't do it for me. I might've picked the wrong time to play it, I don't really know, and I will most likely revisit it sometime next year, hopefully with a different outcome. Metro: Exodus, Gears 5 and Rage 2 were all pretty big disappointments, Rage 2 more so than the other two. Not even super bad games, just forgettable experiences.
All in all I'm quite happy with the number of games I managed to finish this year. I hope to start on Disco Elysium before the year's out, still waiting on the ultrawide patch to drop. I'll definitely give Death Stranding a go next summer, the jury's still out on some of the other titles I am / was interested in, like Shenmue 3, Untitled Goose Game, Link's Awakening, Blasphemous and The Touryst. If there's a drought, then maybe ...
Also, I've been enjoying gaming way more ever since I completely stopped caring about playing games on release date. So liberating.

Count me as a person who's never played an old game from a previous gen outside of maybe the first 6 months of a new gen. I only got so much time in my life to game. I still have my PS3 as a BD player and still have the games just in case. I probably won't get rid of the PS4 regardless of PS5 compatibility.
I think Gears 5 is disappointing to me, too, in that the multiplayer aspect totally dropped the ball. I really dug the campaign, open world parts and all, but that tour of duty made me never want to touch it again. They launched a pretty light multiplayer package (like 7 maps, missing dozens of characters) and then tried to dripfeed content to people.
It's three months later and they only just last week added Baird. (It's still missing characters like Cole, the Carmines, Kim.) But you can't just play as a Baird. You have to go through a bunch of annoying challenges that involve playing modes and characters you don't like first. Or you know, you can give them $10 to bypass it all. Fucking thing sucks.

By HoboVapes Go To PostRDR topped the sales chart on Amazon when it got added to Xbox BC. Seems more people care for it than you’d think would.Getting into back compat also made Black Ops II hit the Xbox Live most played charts again. I also saw rereleases of older games like Fallout 3, New Vegas, RDR in Xbox One cases out there. There's an audience for people to buy old games to some degree for sure.
I think that says more about the Xbox and its lack of original titles to play than the success of BC.
By reilo Go To PostI think that says more about the Xbox and its lack of original titles to play than the success of BC.I think it's both? There's both an appetite for some people to play old games and also the only games Microsoft released this year were Crackdown 3 and Gears 5. Plus, most of the third party games are on Xbox, so it's not like Xbox only players are lacking in new games to play and missing out on RE2, DMC5, Kingdom Hearts, etc.

It depends on the console gen honestly. Alot of SNES games hold up incredible well due being 2D, while early PS1 titles are something that I tend to avoid, unless they're part of my favorite games like the Final Fantasy series. Early 3D is just something that's incredible ugly.
Honestly I love the initiative from MS to bring those titles back for current consoles. Would love if Sony/Nintendo would actually follow the path.
Would play the fuck outta alot of titles I have fond memories of and those that I have missed.
Still, it's far from an utopia where you can play EVERY old title. Sadly it's not, but it's still miles above the offering from Sony.
Same goes for Smokey and his rose tainted picture of the PC as archive for old games. There's no question that you will find the most old titles to play and the library is insane, but it's not like you can just put every game on.
Drivers, OS, hardware architecture are something that makes alot of titles unplayable.
Heck, even on titles where the platform holder supposedly worked on it, it's sometimes a miserable experience. Played Red Alert 2 recently on Origin and the speed of the game is totally off, if I picked a higher resolution there are graphical errors that make it unplayable and that's an issue that's pretty widespread.
Feels to me it's a pretty easy way to add value to the subscription service you wanna sell by adding a BC solution that doesn't require building out a real BC functionality in the box itself.
$5 to stream Zone of Enders from the cloud. Things of that nature.

The fact there’s so many basic af HD remasters released and that they sell really proves that people still want to play older games.

Sony is going to be all about pushing PS Now subs in the future and playing PS3 games on there has been one of the selling points already. It'll be that and selling you PS5 remasters. In like summer 2021, dudes are going to eat up their PS5 port of Ghost of Tsushima.

As much as Stadia is a joke, the pricing scheme feels pretty forward thinking to me. Free to stream games you already own. Fee for an unlimited experience
By DY_nasty Go To PostAnyone here bought a Scuf before?I have. It's decent, but quite a bit overpriced for the build quality. I can't use mine anymore because the triggers are broken. Not sure about their own proprietary controller, maybe that has better build quality than their approach to rebuilding the DS4 with extra bits.

Looks like it's on sale. Hopefully they aren't using the same trigger mechanisms as the DS4, so at $140 or so it might be worth it. Maybe look at some YT impressions.

By DY_nasty Go To PostI was looking at the Vantage (?) And wondering how easy to modify it would be. My biggest problem with the DS4 right now is the trigger response.Extremely easy. It comes with an Allen wrench that lets you turn a screw to adjust trigger sensitivity. The trigger stops are basically on/off, though.
You can get the electronic remapping thing, but I don't remember how to use it but it is a physical thing independent of the console. Button travel distance is not adjustable but I don't know of a console or mouse that allows that, just like a single keyboard.
Sticks are incredibly easy to change out. It comes with a tool. Just a simple twist and pull. I can't remember if there are two or three stick lengths to choose from. There are two stick toppers, though: convex and concave.
The paddles are not adjustable but they are removable. The military plastic grip or whatever it is called is worth it if you have sweaty palms.
The general build quality is a step up from Razer, so not great. Better than MadCatz, not as good as official. The paint on the face buttons wears off after a few months of heavy use.
E: the rubber on their sticks wears out as fast as the paint on the buttons for me
Also, the circle pad for the d-pad just slots on top of the d-pad; you have to be careful when pulling it off because if you don't go straight up, you are liable to break off one of the slots and have it stuck in the d-pad with no way (that I have found) to get it out
