He's partially wrong on one point. Gamers have always been terrible towards devs. 20~ years ago they had already mastered sending death threats to devs.
Lionhead forums and irc channels from mid/late 90's to mid 00's were absolutely amazing. Lots of dev interacting, even Molyneux at times (especially if he thought someone had talked shit, he would be in your DM's quicker than Mahmoud to feet models on Instagram). But really, people were also absolute cunts back then. However it was a bit easier to control on official channels, as they would just be banned or told to fuck off. How many devs even got their own forums these days? Everything seems to be reddit or facebook/twitter, or #cancel campaigns from shit like resetera.
I was also a cunt back then and banned a few times. But they still invited me over there, and I have contact with several of the guys still. 🤷♂

yeah people weren't as loud back then so it was easier to handle. reddit/twitter completely fucked things up, but also just the climate of outrage as an entertainment form, everyone wants in. some indie projects have their own discord server which reminds me a little of those days

Just bought on steam and jumped in. Repaired my ship and followed mission to a new planet. Did a bit of exploring and it wanted me to build a base computer, but I didn't like the planet so I thought I'd check out the next one..
It was an exotic planet I believe, scaled, looked incredible. Made base computer. Built shelter. Wanted me to find some burried tech or something to make blue prints. Went all over plant, couldn't see in the scanner / binoculars or whatever it is.
Apparently they don't exist on exotic planets so flew back to what I think was previous planet. Night time. See island in ocean. Land.
Launch thrusters empty. Tiny island. Surrounded by ocean. Need Di Hydrogen. Non existent on little island or in water around it.
No manual save. No way to get off little island. Are my options swim for 3 hours real time or start over? I feel silly.

I think I'm a good bit ahead of the missions from various NMS story lines. i've got all of the Hyperdrives (I think). I've got S class scanners. The rewards for the missions are giving me trash tier C and B items.
Up to $33 million units now. Can go to a trade terminal and buy the block , don't have to mine anything if I don't want anymore
. Been doing this a bunch lately. Built a transporter on my base and now I can go back and forth between the space stations and the base easy, without actually having to fly off of the planet, and come back.
The new power requirements for the bases are trash though. You gotta dump a fuckton of carbon or oxygen to supply power to the base for a good amount of time (i.e. ~30 minutes), and if you have storage units connected, you can't get to your shit without any power being supplied. You can get to the point where you can throw up solar panels and other things, but I built my base in a cave underground smh.

I actually didn't plan for that. I was trying to escape a storm and just dug into the ground, and luckily stumbled upon a whole network of connected tunnels. So I threw down the base computer to knock out that quest line, and it just grew from there. I created a side entrance in the ground to drop down to it when I need to. I've got a scientist, weapons dealer, working on getting a farmer, storage, and the transporter. The workers each have their own set of quests to complete which gives you more blueprints and rewards. Been mixing that in with some of the main storyline.

First you gotta be lucky to find a good star system with good and resource - rich planets and then you gotta hope those planets don't have radiation storms or boiling hot rain or sand tornadoes every 29 seconds wjich makes farming nearly impossible.

Yeah there's a curve to it. I've had multiple files and I can only remember being screwed over once, and that was on Survivor. After all of the updates, you can be off your starting planet within ~20 minutes.
You have to get the Warp Drive to leave your first system. For the most part it does a good job of making sure that can happen .
