Sylvain and Mercedes better become fucking beasts later on, their growth is trash so far. The former is still level 1 ffs. Bought as many batallions as I could afford and equipped everyone with the best weapons they can handle, hopefully that makes the difference next tome I try.mages are a bit of a headache at first, but they're countered easily enough with gambits. they can't be countered, so thats how you keep them locked down and get them weak enough to be cleaned up early game
mercedes is probably my 3rd best unit. she gets a solid bow debuff later on, but what you need is reason/dark magic as soon as you can. she's basically my res tank and healer because of the self-heal. slyvain is merely good imo.
but one good xp farm run and i've been comfortable ever since really. the game definitely throws some wild shit at you later though...

Trying to decide whether to bother training some of my units up to beginner classes, or skip to the following class. Want to use dedue as an axe welding tank, but the only beginner class with an axe requires him to be a D in bows and gauntlets as well. Gonna try and get both my mages to monk class since only having one healer is going to go wrong at some point.
Catherine's attack animation is what I want.
Ended up smashing that optional battle, put my magic resistant units at the chokepoint with the mages and smashed through the others with Dimitri and Byleth, while managing the damage to let the lower level guys get the killing blows

haven't played any other fire emblems but the tactical layer in three houses, while pretty solid, feels like a step below square enix srpgs--no real problems on hard/classic and some of my crew are becoming godlike, edelgard and petra in particular.
the supports for the black eagles are tonally all over the place. love to see hubert and dorothea tell ferdinand "i fucking hate you dude" and then see SUPPORT HAS RANKED UP TO B. and whatever the anime character archetype bernadetta is can also jump into a lake.

yeah the support cutscenes are kind of all over the place lol, I'm a black eagle guy too
i'm enjoying it so far--classic hard mode
the one thing that I think these games don't seem to understand is that I'm finna save scum--it's just the way it is, full stop, and the games haven't found a way to motivate me to do otherwise. Mechanically I think there's something that can be done to deeply encourage just living with the situation.
Really, these games need to only have one autosave file that constantly updates after every move. The option for multiple save games shouldn't exist.

Game is mad flexible.

No idea why they dropped it, the games wer presumably cheap as shit to make. Focussing on user-created quizzes when it launched on PS3 as a mis-step, but one they could have easily walked back from.
