Nintendo is almost always part of the conversation, and Xbox is almost never part of the conversation.
My office is pretty great.
By Laboured Go To PostJust trying to imagine talking about video games around the water cooler at my office. Fuck me.I try to pretend that I don't partake in such hobbies. I can't be arsed to talk about Fortnite or any of their shit Battle Royale games
who's gonna die next in GoT tho? offf, I love it.
but first i need to start drinking water ;_;
By Bold 2 in One Go To PostBragging about your favourite decapitation finishers in MK is a great way to make friends on the playground.Or you could, and bear with me on this, figure out what shared interests, humour and tastes you have with your coworkers before getting into the weeds with whatever you're talking about.
Around the water-cooler in the office, its a great way to lose them.
In 2019, I would hope games have progressed far enough to not need to rely edgy over-the-top violence to prove …anything
If I knew someone at work liked Mortal Kombat, I'd have likely said 'those new fatalities are fucked up' with a smile at some point. I wouldn't barge in on my first day and ask a 60 year old if she's seen Shao Kahn smashing Scorpion's head out of his own arse with a giant hammer.

a teacher at my school knows i play vidya games, and constantly wants to talk to me about america's army, which he still plays, and amazingly still got an active userbase.

Gratuitous over-the-top violence has lost its 90s vogue, yeah, it was great when we were teenagers, not so much now and can't really bring myself to defend it, especially if it means putting the people who make it through PTSD.
I hope at work, you would have more to discuss with your co-workers than MK
By Ciaran Ashina Go To PostGreat input. It's not my fault we're signing Mihajlovic, okay?
Go play Tetris on mute.
As for violence in video games, you obviously don't want to expose young children to it, but as soon as a person reaches a level of maturity that allows them to unequivocally differentiate between what's real and what's not, what's "good" and what's "bad", everything else is just empty fucking talk. Has been for decades. And there's a rating system in place to prevent the aforementioned scenario.
Violence for violence's sake, that's a completely different story. TLOU2 is hardly a case of it, if TLOU1 is anything to go by.

Miha aside, I mean just based on that last gameplay footage, there's certainly disturbingly detailed violence just for the sake of it.
By Bold 2 in One Go To PostMy post was never about workplace interactionsI personally don't talk about MK because my knowledge of the series is pretty surface-level and I don't think the other #gamers at work like fighting games. Don't really understand why I should have something better to talk about though. Chatting shit about football, films, music, TV, cars, whatever. Games and Mortal Kombat by extension are no better or worse a topic for discussion imo

You seem to be under the impression that if you don't have a problem with gratuitous violence in games, you revel in it. I just find it somewhat immersive in games like TLoU (If you want to show a brutal world, show brutal acts. The suggestion of violence can only take you so far), and amusing in MK. There probably was a time where I found it too enjoyable to be healthy, like when Manhunt was released and I was around 14 years old, but I assume most people like me grow out of that response.

The best thing we talk about at work is food.
Like, we actually talked about a bagel with eggplant and hummus if you're ever getting tired of lox and cream cheese.
It was... enlightenment level shit.

I mean, it's what they do, and they should be able to do that. I'm not a mortal kombat fan either, but it's hard to argue against them doing it. Sucks for that one guy who got PTSD from it, and obviously give him the help he needs, but MK being stupidly violent is kind of part of the deal when it comes to MK and surely something you gotta expect taking a job from NetherRealm. There's plenty of jobs that people develop all kinds of psychological traumas from, also without anyone being particularly to blame for it.
By Ciaran Ashina Go To PostIT ISYou really need the full game to judge what the level of violence is and what it accomplishes in the grand scheme of things.

Did any company copy the Go formula for mobile games?
Gonna buy the Deus Ex one, enjoying the Tomb Raider one at the moment

kinda funny that FF7 of all games is episodic now considering everyone (even people who never played it like me) know the story and twists. So we're basically just waiting for content.
By Zabojnik Go To PostYou really need the full game to judge what the level of violence is and what it accomplishes in the grand scheme of things.I am a MONSTER incapable of love etc. Anyway, seeing a guy disemboweled, guts hanging out and then a close up of a machete to the neck is enough. I'll still play it obviously, but let's call this what it is, perverse.

Again, I think the big thing with NRS is not having any support in place for those that are struggling to deal with the content they are working on. Yeah, you know what you will be working on going in, but you won't know how it will affect once you start going in on it 10-12 hours a day, 7 days a week.
People who monitor child porn get psych support so why not those who have to watch reference snuff vids?

brehs you might be a little delusional if you really there's any artistic value in gratuitus violience. it's only there for shock aka marketing value. why else would naughty dog show a trailer for tlou2 like they did... they successfully got everyone talking about it. your immersion would not be ruined if they toned down the violence.
not really sure what the solution is though. mandatory psych support would probably result in the work being offshored. i would just put a big tax on these sorts of games.

MK in particular is too over the top to even bother looking at snuff films for reference. Screen Fist of the North Star instead or Portugal vs Netherlands 2006

By banning snuff films as reference in the first place. Having gore to reference to is enough, but watching real people die.... i dont see the point, really.

As it stands, I will just roll my eyes if ND staff requires therapy after TLoU2 is done. It's such a stupid first world problem. It will also be for naught, because no studio would ever let realistic looking deaths being animated.
I doubt that ND was supplying their artists snuff videos off liveleak. Graphic material was definitely provided.
Its much more believable that graphic material beyond what ND would provide was sought out by their artists.

tbh couldn't show my dad the start of TLOU because he was in a firing line when he was 8 years old and saw a classmate be executed. That shit still with him, 60 years on.
By s y Go To PostI very much doubt that ND was supplying their artists snuff videos. Graphic material was definitely provided.and the management should put their foot down and put a hard ban on it. I can relate how stupid artists can be at getting references but they need to draw a clear line.

The whole point of MK is absurd, over the top goofy violence. Literally from it's inception.
I doubt their team was looking at liveleak videos, if they were, they were overthinking it.
I don't know what you're even arguing bold.
