Getting good depends on what you're trying to get out of it. If you want play like the pros, then you treat it like a fighting game. If it's just higher rank, focus on not getting hit. I don't know how 5 handles tells, but the series is usually pretty decent at letting you know that you're going to get clocked.
I guess going totally old school can be forgiven considering how utterly shit Capcom has been when they tried making something outside the box.

I don't need no innovation.Innovation doesn't necessarily mean camera-wise. Mechanics can be improved. Enemy AI where you can force conflict to happen between the enemies, etc. Things that can be seen as an evolutionary step for RE, while still keeping the scariness and third person view.
Same with the DMC series.
RE7 isn't a PT clone. That's cap.
You're point still stands tho. 7 is a realized fps version of RE1 and mechanically speaking, it's not to different from the old classics (block aside).
