I need your assistance, brothers
I need a laptop for my sister for uni, she needs something for programs like autocad and uni work, good processing power is essential
is the below machine suitable?

8GM of ram is not nearly enough for design work like AutoCAD. She wants a minimum of 16 GB, but the more, the better.
AutoCAD is primarily single-threaded, and I do not know how good that CPU is. Core count really does not matter; just how fast a single core can be.
The program can use GPU for some display features, but I am not sure how beefy of one is needed. One that supports DX12 is recommended, though.
The Optane drive accelerator/cache is nice, but I am not sure how much use AutoCAD would make of it.
Basically, AutoCAD requirements is what will be driving basically any choice you make for this machine.

do you have any recommendations.

“Intel is back. These are the best products in their category. We have the best supply situation. We have the best quality software assets. The most respected, venerable technology brand in the industry. Yeah, that’s what your channel readers need to be delivering to their customers,” Gelsinger told Martin.
Gelsinger also said Intel’s Sapphire Rapids CPU will keep Arm’s sliver of success in servers just that—a sliver. “When you think about the data center space, the role of Arm is very minimal today, and us getting our act together, I think it stays that way,” he said.

@Adam
By Daz Go To PostthanksIn terms of priority:
do you have any recommendations.
1. The most RAM you can afford (I would consider 32 GB as "enough")
2. The highest (non-burst) clock-speed CPU you can afford
3. A dedicated GPU (instead of an integrated GPU) if you can afford it in the budget
I do not have an recommendations for a specific laptop as there is too much for me to keep up with. Just get a name brand and the longest warranty you can afford because you will have to send it back to the manufacturer if you encounter issues.

By Daz Go To PostthanksIs this just 2D AutoCAD or something like Plant 3D?
do you have any recommendations.
Any sort of budget in mind or just need to see what it will cost first?
Honestly at this point if you aren't at 32GB you aren't even playing the game. Everything is so ram hungry so 16 GB is the starting point for any new laptop that is your daily driver. Even my work provided laptop has 32GB.

By Daz Go To Postits for 2D autocad and matlab and python.Ok so your hardware requirements aren't actually super high, thats good.
I would at least go for 16GB of RAM though, and that model you listed has soldiered memory. Is that your preferred retailer or are there other options where you live? Are you comfortable with doing a simple RAM upgrade?

Its for my sister - she's not fussed about the technical bits, just something that will allow her to do the autocad and python stuff efficiently.
By Daz Go To Postits not for me.Yeah I was meaning hers when saying "your".

The technical bits are what get you to doing stuff efficiently! I was going to look at specific models that site had available but everything Kibner was saying is right other than we know you don't really need a dedicated GPU now. I wouldn't go with less than 16GB of RAM.
How is Windows 11 treating everyone?
or did you all hold off on it like me?
edit: You know what? I think I'm taking the plunge

By Kibner Go To PostI'm waiting until the first "service pack" or whatever the equivalent is. Like I do for every Windows OS since Vista."Feature update" now. Supposed to be in the second half of each year.
Been using it for some time now. It's fine. Kind of destroyed my drivers so had to do a clean install and still fucking up as I can't use the Microsoft store.
i'd probably want to install w11 fresh if i upgraded, and i just can't be bothered. will probably wait until i build something new, some time in the next year.. or soon if alder lake is any good but that's unlikely.
Just finished upgrading. It's been seemless so far and all of my stuff is still installed and working. Didn't need to update any drivers or anything. Next I guess I'll play some games and see what the performance is like.
edit: Games run great too. I'm glad I made the switch!

Has Microsoft gave any details for why CPUs that are/should be capable of running W11, like my 6600k, aren't supported?
Edit: Looks like the reason is 'security concerns'.

By Zabojnik Go To PostJust solder a TPM 2.0 module to your motherboard, you'll be fine.I've no problems with the TPM, it's just my CPU that's not supported
Yeah it’s kinda annoying because the PC I built for my parents has my old 7700k which is still a very capable cpu but isn’t supported.

Currently looking at this option.

I don’t fully understand how someone can be confident enough to build a hardline custom loop and lack the knowledge of the basic components required to build said loop.
I agree, I fucking hate it. Feels insecure as fuck to plug in. Still, it’s pretty much the standard used for D5/DDC pump power delivery.
How you gonna spend that much money building something and not even be sure you know how to properly build it?

When I go to settings it says my PC doesn't meet all the requirements for W11. If I want to know more download the PC Health Check app
PC Health Check App says I'm all good to go
My PC won't let me update anyway

Being an early OS adopter isn’t fun.
Hearing rumours of the macbook pro M1X - how much do you reckon the 16" version will be?
Looking to invest, my current lappy is from 2014 and she's been solid, but the keyboard is on the fritz and the headphone jack is gone as well as the speakers are popping with only one side working.

Have this in my cart ready to checkout so I can get rid of my HDD. Just wanna make sure it's worth it and I don't waste my money (i dont trust website reviews bc everything is basically a 4.5 unless its a barely functional product)

The older P5 goes for $99. $60 seems like a steep price to pay for a feature you probably (making assumptions) don't need.

If you care about higher end features might as well spend an extra $18 and grab the Samsung 980 Pro.
Been given a £2000 budget to build a PC for work, it looks like I can build something solid with that, but seems wild that the 3080/3090 are still selling at a minimum of 50% above RRP even on "reputable" sites.

Ok thanks diehard and Kib
I guess my follow up would be, what differs between gen 4 and gen 3? I don’t use my computer for anything other than school and games so it probably doesn’t make a difference but I’m curious now

By Old King Rob Go To PostOk thanks diehard and KibDouble the theoretical bandwidth. There will basically be no difference from just the protocol change on things like games.

The only possible thing I could think of is that PCIe 4.0 could be useful for you would be Direct Storage but if I were you I wouldn't worry about it.
Keep in mind you need Zen 2 (AMD 3000 series desktop) or Rocket Lake (Intel 11th gen desktop) or newer to even have PCIe 4.0.
By HonestVapes Go To PostThey finally did it, just a shame they’ve been dethroned now25mm vs 30mm though, right? Not exactly a fair comparison. Close enough that most people building in cases that aren't starved for space won't and shouldn't care, but still.
