looks like zen4 is sticking with pcie4 though... intel will already be on pcie5 by then. how significant is that expected to be? I know it's a doubling of bandwidth but is it actually going to matter?
I’ve not put too much thought into which way I’ll go in terms of CPU upgrades in the future since this 9900K still puts in work.
I’ve had such a hassle free experience with Intel in comparison to AMD over the last 4 years though. That’s something that will definitely sway me towards Intel unless there’s a huge performance or price gap between them and AMD.

people seem much more happy with AMD these days, but I've heard so many complaints about early AM4 days that it makes me worry about the first gen AM5 products

I know it's a doubling of bandwidth but is it actually going to matter? For the average consumer / gamer? Not likely. It'll be fun looking at nvme drive transfer numbers that will make PS5's cocaine-laced ssd look like it's still using magnets, but other than that ... It'll be great for the simple fact that you won't have to worry about bandwidth and lanes limitations, if you're somehow using multiple ssds and other IO devices that run via pcie. Motherboard prices are gonna go up because of it, that's for sure.

And more so in 12-18 months, when I'm likely to be shopping for a new CPU? Haven't heard any of that noise regarding AMD CPUs lately, if not for the occiasional very specific and mostly obscure productivity application favouring Intel.

It depends I suppose. I was a fairly early adopter of a Ryzen 1600 and had an endless headache with a Ryzen 3750H based laptop. I built a PC a couple years ago with a 1500X and RX 570 for my niece that I’ve had to look into a couple times since. I picked out a prebuilt for a friend with a 2600 and RX 590 then months lately had to talk him through underclocking the GPU due to a specific clockspeed related crash specific to that model.
I wouldn’t go as far as to use my experience to put others off AMD’s products. If you’ve never had issues with them then you don’t have a reason to be skeptical like I am.
By LabouredPatriot Go To PostIt's going to be rad watching all these online stores continue not to have bot protection. Most of them do, as bots are updated multiple times a week to get around the protections.

It's mostly useful for people with NVMe RAID setups and shit.
Oh no, Tech YT have settled on the “nobody asked for this” stance despite a lot of people wanting a 3080 with 1-2GB more VRAM last year.
Linus went against the grain this time.

I don't like it, but that's supply and demand.
double price for +2gb vram is kinda crazy lol
this pricing is probably more along the lines of what nvidia want to be charging though
no way we get something as good value as the 3080 next gen

By LunaticNotFounder Go To PostOnly Zabo, Vapes or Smokey are that crazy. You vastly over estimated my level of crazy (and disposable income)
Same. I'm either getting a 3080 at near-MSRP in the next 6 months, which seems impossible, or I'm waiting for the 4000 series.

Etherium 2.0 for pushed back. Again. 18 months this time. It s originally supposed to be released in like 2018 or something. And then the crypto bros told me it would be releasing this summer or fall. But, nah, officially moved back.
As to why this matters, Etherium is the coin that 80% of GPUs used for mining primarily mine. 2.0 changes how the mining works such that strong GPUs aren't actually needed to do the mining, saving power and silicon for other people.

I guess my Logitech G613 decided to brick itself. Apparently they have a new wireless mechanical keyboard for .. $250? Damn that RGB tax is hefty.

I’ve contemplated getting the G915 but ultimately settled for the G513. Just couldn’t stomach paying 250 euros for a keyboard. Really happy with my choice for 100 euros less.
wtf, had no idea the IRS was giving out random checks to hardworking tax payers.
off to get me a beefiest and thiccest laptop known to man kind.

Definitely do your research beforehand since the there’s an incredible amount of fuckery with them. If they’re not temp limited they’re powered limited, or they could be missing 10% of their CUDA cores as a recent example from Dell/Alienware.

Jarrod’s Tech does good reviews on YT specifically for laptops.

Never much looked into passive coolers. How close can they get to non-passive? And would they actually be any good for an OC CPU?
By Laboured Go To PostNever much looked into passive coolers. How close can they get to non-passive? And would they actually be any good for an OC CPU?
An actively cooled heatsink of roughly the same size will outperform a passive cooler, and they’re not at all ideal for overclocking.
If you’re happy to trade temps for silence though? A meaty passive cooler can keep a CPU from thermal throttling, even if it means running close to the 95c/100c/105c or whatever the max is for CPUs lately.
With a quiet fan on the heatsink for a semi-passive set up, it could work well with some higher TDP CPUs.
But so could a NH-15 with a fan running at 800rpm. Or any 100€ air cooler. What I want to know is how it compares to similarly sized & heavy active coolers with the fan off. Unless it performs significantly better, what's even the point.
It's a niche product for a niche audience. It's for people who want no moving parts due to noise and /or reliability.
e: Probably the people who are most interested in it are those who are running home servers and want more power than something like a NUC could provide. My NUC is actually being used as a home server (and has for years) and I have not had to worry about anything in it because the entire case provides passive cooling.
But I will be adding my current machine as another, more powerful, home server once I can get a GPU in a couple years so I will probably buy this heatsink to stick on it. Just to have one less point of failure.

I finally got a notification email in one of EVGA's queues for an RTX 3070 Ti XC3 Ultra. Thanks to associate codes and my elite member spin wheel code I was able to get 13% off, so with taxes and overnight shipping included it was just under $700. The GTX 1080 Ti SC2 is my old card. 3gb less vram now but COD Cold War at 4K max settings (except turned off ray tracing) was running butter smooth and my other games are less demanding so I don't think any of my current games (or games that I'm planning to get this year) need more than the 8gb.
I'm also like 2 minutes away from being notified on the RTX 3080 Ti FTW3 Ultra queue so once I get that (probably another week or two) then I'll put that in my main system, sell the 1080 Ti for what I paid for the 3070 Ti, and then either use the 3070 Ti in a build for a family member or otherwise keep it as a backup card.
