Think it's time for me to build a PC.
Having zero prior experience, where do you guys usually start when starting from zero? Should i prioritize CPU/GPU?
It's clear to me that I'm obviously going to need a CPU, Motherboard, Memory, Storage, GPU, PSU , Case, Monitor, Mouse and Keyboard.
I don't expect to do much gaming with the exception of some X-Com and CK. I'm also trying to stay within a 800-1100 budget ( not including monitor)
Looking around and there's plenty of options for all components, so I'm starting to be a little overwhelmed...

Day to day some Office programs and Photoshop, maybe some programming in the future.
Whet it comes to games I would still mostly play PS4/5, but I do want to be play games like CK, X-Com, Wasteland and not have to worry about performance issues.

If you're willing to wait and stretch that budget a bit, you could squeeze in a 3070 RTX, which is crazy, if it really is as fast as the 2080ti.
Otherwise you're looking at 5700 / 2060 Super build, with a Ryzen 3700X, which is still a very respectable combo.

Koko, here is a build I made, minus monitor, keyboard, and mouse. It is focused on giving you a lot of flexibility with what you are running now and giving you the ability to upgrade to better parts in the future (if you need them). If you want to cut some costs, switching to a Radeon RX570 GPU, downgrading to only 16 GB of RAM, or use a B450 board are where I would look.
Also, there is a white version of the case in this build for the same price, if you would prefer that, instead.

Mouse and keyboard have lots of personal preference. Especially depending on if you want wired or wireless. If you want wireless, Logitech stuff with their LightSpeed is pretty much the only good choice.
If you are ok with wired, I like this mouse for a good combination of performance, ergonomics, and price: https://gaming.kinesis-ergo.com/vektor/
For keyboard, you really just want something with mechanical switches. Cherry MX Browns are good all-rounders. There are lots out there and, honestly, pretty much any of them will do for you.
PCGR has great mice and keyboards for great prices, but with terrible branding.

What about the new Tiger Lake based stuff tho?

Seems like the GPU and PSU are out of stock at the moment, which seems to be a normal thing.. I don't mind waiting a couple weeks more or should I start looking for alternatives.
Wait a month for Ryzen 4 series. 4600 is probably going to outmuscle the 3600 quite a bit which could lead to major discounts.
To put it into perspective: I bought my 3600 for 199€ on launch. It's a great (best) value processor that hasn't been discounted that much since release

By Koko Go To PostThanks for the replies guys. For PSU you want one that is fully modular and rated gold, titanium, or platinum. Bronze is the cheapest, but could be unreliable, depending on the brand. It's hard to find an unreliable gold or better PSU.

Modular means that the PSU has cables that can detach completely from the unit. This makes the PC easier and less annoying to build.
E: yeah, gpu's are hard to find in stock. 1660 Super seems to be the best "I want to game well for cheap and not worry about AMD driver issues" card, atm.
Also, the Lian Li LANCool II Mesh is a little better than the P400A I linked wasn't in stock when I looked. The RGB version is more expensive but the non - RGB may be a little cheaper.
Looking likely that there's only a 5-10% performance difference at 4K between the 3080 and 3090. Hope I'm wrong.

By Kibner Go To PostSeems like it really may be more focused for professional work + gaming, then.Probably has an advantage at 8K too, I guess due the bandwidth.
That’s kinda good though, makes the 3080 seem even better value. Also means I really don’t need the upgrade because the jump just isn’t big enough justify for me.
3090 is the Titan equivalent right?
I think 3070 will be my sweet spot. Would be great for getting 1080/144 fps for a long time with everything maxed.
Or would I be able to get that with an eventual 3060?

Might pass if thats the case 🤔
By Red Blaster Go To Postif 3090 benches are true then lmao at changing that price for ~20% better perf than the 3080In fairness, it's likely they're charging that price for the extra 14GB of GDDR6X, and the SLI connection (even though SLI is dead), plus yeno, Nvidia tax.
If the benches are accurate though, it really makes the almost inevitable 3080Ti card at a 1K price point pretty pointless too. It would be what, 4-8% better? For £350 more? Sheesh.
Edit: Another thing to note is that the 3080 is already on the GA-102 big boy die, just cut back in some respects from the 3090.
The previous few generations, the XX80 used the 104 die and the XX80Ti and Titan used the 102, with the 80Ti using a cut back version. There was never much difference between a 1080Ti and Titan Xp or 2080Ti and Titan RTX for instance.
So to me it seems there’s really not much more they can squeeze out the GA-102 die, in terms of performance or in terms of squeezing a card in the stack between the 3080 and 3090.
The one ace up their sleeve for more performance would be better binned and faster GDDR6X. Akin to what they did with the 20 series Super GPUs.
The other, which is practically guaranteed is doubling the VRAM capacity. Which has already been rumoured and unofficially confirmed by Gigabyte IIRC.

By HonestVapes Go To PostThe other, which is practically guaranteed is doubling the VRAM capacity. Which has already been rumoured and unofficially confirmed by Gigabyte IIRC.Unless you have a specific need for 20gb of GDDR6X and can't / don't want to splurge on a 3090, I fail to see the need for such a card. Actual memory usage (not the allocated memory reported via monitoring software) in games is evidently nowhere near 10gb even at 4K these days and while it's something that might see an increase over the years, I very much doubt it'll be a limiting factor within the lifespan of the 3080.
Guess it depends on how much they'll charge for it. A significant chunk, one would imagine, if the higher cost of the 3090 is in part due to memory.
the 10gb 3080 isn't going to last long for 4k gaming, rdr2 already uses ~6gb vram despite bad textures and no ray tracing. now that consoles are getting 16gb vram to play with (albeit that's total memory), I don't see how things aren't going to get drastically worse. but it'll take a few years at least. the 3080 is a good purchase, I just wish it had 12gb vram. if I get one I'd expect to upgrade to a 4080.

This happened to me with Amazon once. Nobody came to my door. Rang Amazon customer service up and told them, they said they'd call the delivery driver to sort his life out and deliver the package, giving me £10 credit to make up for the driver being a wasteman.
10 minutes later man's knocking on my door and delivering.

Gigabyte 3080 and 3090 PCBs. Never seen such a variety in PCBs for a single card before. Obviously the FE PCB is it's own thing, Gigabyte have done there own thing, Zotac have their own, EVGA, Asus and MSI all seemingly offering a variety, none of which thus far are reference.
Seems like getting a confirmed compatible block if you buy an odd layout early will be hell.

By Kibner Go To PostVapes, what was the mouse feet brand you recommend?Corepads, but I believe Hyperglides are just as good if not better. I think the latter are easier to get a hold of in the US.
A note on mouse feet, if they don't sell a set for your particular mouse then you can order a set for a Zowie mouse (for example, since they have a nice amount of surface area), and sand down the base of your own mouse so that it's flat, then apply the alternative mouse feet.
The sanding is only required if your mouse has a plastic lip surrounding the stock feet, as many do.
These FE blocks are doing it for me, even Corsair's (which is now up)

EK's teaser for the FE block had the G1/4 at the end of the card like that Bitspower block.
It'd be so ideal for me with the Q37, I'd get a lot more cooling out the bottom rad with less restriction around half of it.
