I think if it had better VRM cooling, the dremel'd holes would be a slam dunk win. But it doesn't so I kinda go back and forth. Especially since that VRM throttling happens frequently during boosting and could result in game stutters.

Especially since that VRM throttling happens frequently during boosting and could result in game stutters. That's on Asus for being cheap really. A small heatsink, or a stronger VRM in itself would've no doubt sorted that issue out. I didn't catch it in the video, but even a thermal pad connecting the VRM to the metal place that covers it would help out.
The overall design of that laptop is very similar to the Zephyrus G model I got my GF last year that was a lot cheaper. Same covered vents, same M.2 placement next to a heat pipe internally. Thankfully the internals aren't as power hungry, so thermally it has been sound (as far as laptops go).
Yeah, it is absolutely on Asus for being cheap, especially in the price range that laptop is being sold in. I just meant that the dremel holes in the design as it currently exists otherwise wasn't necessarily an unequivocal win.
The default SSD placement is also super bad, yeah.
Bad cooling design because of constraints that shouldn't have existed in that price bracket.

I can understand why they default to the left slot over the right slot too, since a lot of laptops do have a restriction on the second M.2. Be it reduced PCIE lanes, being SATA only or being NVMe only.

I can put a SATA or NVMe in the left slot, but only a NVMe in the right. Assuming they reuse the same motherboard across various SKUs, some cheaper than others, it makes sense to default to the M.2 slot that allows for both drive types in assembly. Especially if automation is involved.
On the whole though, I've noticed a lot of bad to questionable things coming out of Asus lately. Like the debacle with the AMD GPUs not too long ago.
Got the Lian Li Q37 today. Looks even better than the pictures. Just lined up the EK FLT 120 reservoir to make sure it’ll fit, shit’s close but it’ll work out how I’d planned it to.
Need to cut out part of the case for the pump to pass through the frame of the case, need some distilled water too to flush the new radiators.

Dremel game strong. Was an absolute pain in the arse too because the top and bottom are riveted on the frame, was near impossible to cut a horizontal straight line. Had to drill out a a row of holes and get the cutter in at an angle to finish it off.
End result is as I intended though, all the cables will be hidden, the pump is sticking out in the rear compartment of the case and not touching any of the frame.
By Adam Go To PostI'm glad Vapes is now cured of SFFitisStill on the ITX train though. In fairness, I really don’t have a use for more than a single PCIE slot so that’s unlikely to change.

I do use an inordinate number of USB ports (multiple audio devices and input device dongles), but as long as that is covered, I should be good.

I have 4 extra between my monitors, and two USB C headers unused.
I’m yet to find a use a for USB C tbh. I was thinking of using a a hub or something, but even that I’ve no use for.
But think of all the stuff you are missing out on! M.2 slot expansions! Audio Cards! Extra USB C ports! A PCIE Osciloscope digitizer for... something!
Yeah, I always laugh when youtubers et.al. make such a big deal about having that much room for expansion. If you need it, it's likely you'd fill it up as soon as you build your PC. If you need it in the future, it's likely you are ready to upgrade the core of your system anyway.

I'm putting my computer in the same place regardless, what does it matter if its a little shorter?
For me it's not about the PCIE slots, its that i need a case for more hard drives.

PCIe wi-fi and ethernet cards are better than their USB alternatives, though. More reliable and better signals, at least.
By diehard Go To PostI'm putting my computer in the same place regardless, what does it matter if its a little shorter?More storage slots is definitely a good reason for wanting a bigger motherboard with more slots to attach that storage to, definitely. It is a relatively niche thing for even most enthusiasts, though.

A case with a smaller desk footprint for me means more room for my other junk on my desk and also easier transport to QuakeCon and back.
It’s a shame mATX is limited almost entirely to budget boards. It’s a nice middle ground size
I’m purposely moving to a larger desk to accommodate the new case. The one I have currently has shelves built into it that really limit where a tower can go.
Genuinely this £50 desk from Amazon was the driving force behind going the SFF route in the first place.

By DominicanPower Go To PostQuestion, is it same to run the pc on high performance all the time or just when gaming? There are possibly some very marginal gaming benefits, but it is often just best to leave the power plan on "balanced". If you notice micro-stutters in your game, then try turning on "high performance" and comparing.
Anyone tried out hardware accelerated GPU scheduling yet? For Turing and Pascal GPUs on the latest drivers. Haven’t updated yet since I’m on beta Vulkan drivers for CEMU, but from what I’ve seen it can give a nice boost to performance in some games.

By Kibner Go To PostI installed the driver, but haven't looked up how to enable/use it or done any game comparisons.I think it’s in the Nvidia control panel. The only testing I saw was limited, but it showed an improvement or no change at all with a Ryzen 3600 and 2080Ti.
Seems a no brainer to toggle on. I’ll need to look up if CEMU’s async compute works with the latest drivers before I update.
By inky Go To PostI don't think that's available for Pascal cardshttps://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5036
I was wrong about it being in the Nvidia control panel though. It’s in Windows’s display settings.
I have it enabled but I mostly play Fornite. I don't know if they devs have to do something on their end.
By DominicanPower Go To PostI have it enabled but I mostly play Fornite. I don't know if they devs have to do something on their end.Nope. Not only do they not have to do anything, it's API agnostic. You probably won't see much of a difference, so far the only measurable change seems to come from VRAM limited cards.
My shoestring budget PC now runs like utter ass thanks to a technician who replaced the old busted mobo with a fantastically crappy one that causes even LoL to run at sub-10 FPS. It's a miracle I can even do video editing on this.
So now I'm saving up for some better parts, but given the country I live in, I'll have to be modest. Opinions?

Not a great reason to get a Ryzen 5 1600 unless you really can't find something else (or getting a really good price). Are you able to find a Ryzen 3 3100 or 3300x? I know they are basically OOS or way overpriced in the US right now.
I'm assuming those prices are USD, please don't pay anywhere near that for a B450 motherboard.

Wait for vapes. He will build you a PC worthy of Mordor. (within your budget & region too). Hoepfully 😄
If not, I think it would be easier to just list some available options for each component, and then we can put something together.

1 TB Sata SSD over the 7200RPM imo, huge upgrade for a small price and less storage is not much of a problem as you have the option to upgrade in the future
Also that motherboard a bit too rich for my blood, look into ASUS and MSI

I get that, that's why I suggested to see what else is there around those parts that could be in the same price ballpark (not price listed in the image, but the price they see).
Finally got around to putting all the parts together. I have the Aorus master. On the manual it says the cpu needs to be powered with a 12v 8pin. So whats the extra 8 pin for? Should I power both? I'm assuming for overclocking?
Also the 3950x paired with a sabrent rocket as an OS is fast from power to windows login screen. I'm really enjoying how snappy everything is. Can't want to OC and do some heavy VFX work on it.

Nice. Thanks diehard.
So I know you have the phanteks evolv x too no?
I thought it was rgb lighting but the only thing that lights up is the long strip on the bottom chamber. So I guess I'll need rgb fans on the front too then (low noise preferred). I'm looking at you smokey.
Also need recommendation on wood mechanical keyboards.
Also I'm surprised how quiet the system is. That Arctic freezer 280 is super quiet.
Upgraded to a evga G3 850. And overall a. Very quiet case.

im trying to remember how that could possibly happen.. I think the SATA power and RGB connector go to them both? Take a good look at all the connectors?

I'm not aware of any you can buy off the shelf, but I know you can get wooden cases for certain boards. I saw one recently for the Anne Pro, and I know they make them for the GK61 boards. Haven't seen any full size ones.
Test fit for the rad and pump. Really happy with how it's looking, just wish the Corsair branding wasn't upside down when mounted to the bottom of the case. I could possibly flip it and run the tubes under the bottom of the case but I really can't be arsed to cut it up anymore than I have already.
Also went against a flush mount for the reservoir, I've used the short brackets that come with the reservoir because I feel like they'll do a better job at isolating the pump from the case. I've stuffed the cut out with foam around the D5 too, which I'm hoping will further reduce noise.
Thanks for the opinions fellas.
Brazil. The USD exchange rate only seems to keep going up so this will probably affect my plans in the future. I'm on a rather tight budget.
A bit late on the CPU recommendations, I already got the 1600 sitting on my shelf. It's basically the best option on my budget and the difference in performance to, say, a 2600 is negligible.
Yes, they're USD, but the local prices seem decent enough, although it appears B450M mobos are an endangered species, so I better be quick I guess.
Gonna have to pass on that, it's out of my reach. I need as much space as I can for video files.

What's the second hand/used market like for parts in Brazil?
It'd be easy for me to throw together a parts list on PCPP at a targetted budget, but the availability for you to get the recommendations would properly be rough. Going second hand and scooping up bargains where you can would likely get you a lot more for your money though. Assuming you wouldn't have to pay import taxes that way either if they apply to you.
If it's anything like here in MX, it's Mercado Libre, maybe ebay and I wouldn't trust most sellers unfortunately. Yeah, it's a bad time to upgrade, everything is out of stock in LATAM, but also, exchange rates are gonna get so much worse by the end of the year that you basically have no choice. I already missed the chance to add an SSD expansion, and prices went up 40%-120% already.

I guess it exists, but I don't keep up with it. Certain stores have used item sections, but I only plan to buy an used graphics card, and I'd really prefer to get everything else brand new to make sure it works right out of the gate. Besides you're most likely to find used game consoles instead of PC parts so I wouldn't say it's worth it.
ffs, im an idiot, diehard.

It's hard to make specific part recommendations because of availability but everything you listed should work. A couple things you might want to look for is the QVL memory list of the motherboard you buy to include the memory you are looking at and possibly go to a 250GB SSD, here in the US 120 and 250's are basically the same price new.
