By FortuneFaded Go To PostWatched Once Upon A Time In Hollywood this weekend. Didn't like it and is easily Quentin's worst. I really didn't like the final act. I thought the retconning of history was pretty disgusting. It reminds me of when Mark Walhberg said that if was on one of the planes on 9/11, he would have taken on the hijackers. Some people felt that it wasn't his best work, and I disagree with that but it's whatever. However pretty much any story that has real historical figures in that isn't a biopic swaps stuff up a story. Shit he killed Hitler off in IB.
I don't mind the Hitler in the cinema thing because it felt cathartic, being able to kill him off before he killed himself. This was different.
Think this was fairly cathartic too. honoured Tate, displayed wistfulness and longing for alternative circumstances, and turned the manson family into failure hippy dogs instead of glorifying them
By FortuneFaded Go To PostI don't mind the Hitler in the cinema thing because it felt cathartic, being able to kill him off before he killed himself. This was different. There is no mystery to the Mason family, and how it really ended for them just as with Hitler. I am not seeing a difference in slightest. In fact I felt the use of the lesser known members of the cult instead of Mason really kept the film from going from a alternative reality flick to fake news.

Again, if someone didn't like it as a movie it's kinda too bad... but not seeing what FF was seeing
definitely not tarantino's best movie. I haven't seen death proof, but i'd rank Once Upon a Time at the bottom of his works, above reservoir dogs.
agree with ff, once upon a time is easily tarantino's worst movie. wouldn't have bothered watching it in the cinema if it didn't have tarantino's name attached to it
By n8 dogg Go To PostNeed to think about the Irishman some more, but haven’t stopped since it finished. A genuine masterwork. Scorsese’s made three in a row
now, the mad bastard.
Seismic fuckin movie. Last hour had me choked up in its entirety.
I didn't even care that much for Sheeran. He felt like a robot at times, with hardly any emotions and no remorse at all.
Only his struggle with Hoffa and Russell, which was the strongest reaction and the hardest fight he had to endure.
Unlike Henry Hill or Ace Rothstein (I forgot the real name the character is based on), Sheeran wasn't charismatic or that much of an interesting personality.
Despite that, the road towards the end with the themes of mortality, his legacy and the destroyed family was just a gut punch.
Combine that with the feeling of the huge conflict and struggle of the Hoffa killing, with everyone just going to jail or dying anyway and it feels like, all those struggles have been pointless as fuck and now they're all dying alone or in prison. You pretty much ask yourself, was anything worth it? Just alot of pain and anger for the affected families, nobody won.
Seeing Sheeran alone in that room at the end, despite not really being into his character and it still felt like a gut punch, was some amazing work by Marty.
I disliked the ending in Inglorious Basterds, loved around 3/4 of that movie though.
Probably because the history about how Hitler met his end is fascinating by itself. So seeing that, seemed mediocre compared to what really happened in his last days.
Not looking forward to Once Upon A Time In Hollywood too, but I'm glad they portrayed the Manson Family as a bunch of hippies, because that's what they are.

This wasn't a dramatic movie that focused on Hitler, there are other movies that do that with the correct historical context.
It didn't fit in with the way the movie works, it didn't fit in with the themes being clearly over the top.
Doesn't really make a difference whenever they kill him in the cinema or would have stormed the bunker.
Hitler is just one part of the puzzle for the big showdown.
I get your point that the actual correct historical context is interesting. I just don't see it being something that could be included and that would make alot of sense or would be interesting in a movie that's so far over the top.

There was no feeling of catharsis, or any sort of feeling when I saw Hitler being gunned down. It was more like the feeling of a book a movie was adapted from was better than what you just watched.

That is the ending
For once QT decides to grow up and gives a nice lady who’s only ever remembered as a murder victim some time on screen as a real person and this is where people jump off?
Kind of said it before but since we're back on Once Upon, I really liked how Once Upon A time looked. I really liked how Dicaprio's portrayal and REALLY liked the fake tv show/movie segments. I really liked Dicaprio's interactions with the child actress.
I either didn't care or actively disliked pretty much everything else (The Manson family, Cliff, Sharon)
I either didn't care or actively disliked pretty much everything else (The Manson family, Cliff, Sharon)
I thought the Manson stuff was good but thankfully it wasn't the main point of the movie. Just Cliff & Rick hanging out, Rick coming to grips with his career fading out and Cliff just trying to go with the wind.
That Great Escape scene was really great aswell.
That Great Escape scene was really great aswell.
Rian Johnson is a genius. Knives Out was such a good time, the script was tightly written, the performances were great and Daniel Craig killed it.
Bring on the sequel.
Bring on the sequel.
once upon a time feels extremely disjointed and aimless, even without the weird ending that relies entirely on you knowing what happened in reality so that's probably lost to a lot of people in 2019
easily Tarantino's worst movie, not to mention all the dirty hippie feet

He’s doing what he wants and not caring about the audience which is extremely admirable in this day and age.

Tarantino is overrated but that’s besides the point
I didn't you'd have to know the exact details of what happened to enjoy the ending Once Upon Time. Who doesn't enjoy sloppy Leo with a flamethrower?
Just finished the Irishman, phew Pesci was incredible I thought. Last hour as n8 said was just so sad man, def need to watch again but first take was I disagree with penny about DeNiro

His acting was wonderful and on point.
It's the character of Sheeran that's feels a bit robotic or let me just say shallow, in terms of emotions. At least with the majority of things in life.
His first wife and the divorce, the second wife and her passing hardly felt like something that had an impact on him. His daughters and everything he puts them through, both early on and later when he see's how they're suffering. All the killings that are just a job for him with one exception and how he felt hardly any remorse at all with one exception again.
The main point that always influenced him and illustrated his emotions were his friendships. His mentor Russel and his friend Hoffa.
The struggle to make both of them happy, followed by the struggle to ease the tension and followed by the last part. Loyality to whom?
This is the part where Sheeran and bits of his humanity are visible and make a point. Personally I found it alot harder, not to cheer for him, but really care alot about him.
As I said, DeNiro pulled that off incredible well but it's the character I'm not a particular big fan of, especially in comparsion to main characters from other Scorsese movies.
It's just one part that I'm not the biggest fan of, but that doesn't mean I can't appreciate the performance of DeNiro and that incredible film.
Heck, I even felt for Sheeran at the end, despite my dislike for him. Said it before, the last hour in particular is just a gutpunch. The entire section with everything going down, the assassination of Hoffa, Russel and nearly everyone else dying, his daughters hating him, the mortality with his body slowly breaking down and the loneliness are freaking perfect.
That was perfection and far more powerful than what Goodfellas and Casino did at the end.

Finally some Asian representation in Marvel. Never thought this day would come.
Not sure about OUATIH. Very competent in many ways and well acted. Felt aimless at best and masturbatory at worst. Kind of a shrug and move on film which is a shame because there’s a lot of people doing fine work in it.
