It's always funny to me that people have this deep conviction that "white culture" exists but their heads would explode if you asked them if Turkish Americans are white.

US President Donald Trump has insisted that Mexico will still pay for the border wall, claiming he never meant it would make a one-time payment.
"Obviously I never meant Mexico would write a cheque," Mr Trump said before travelling to McAllen, Texas.

One thing I wanted to ask about the shutdown is obviously you've got lots of workers or departments not being paid, but do they get paid lost wages when things open back up? And if not why don't many just quit and move on?

And if not why don't many just quit and move on?I can't speak on everyone's situation obviously but some times banks (lol) will step in and offer to pay wages to bridge the gap during a shutdown. Some also get backpay for sure, even though it was fuck christmas for a lot of people...
there's a lot of reasons why you can't simply quit though. many gov employees are in it for the retirement... also, the government is fucking great at protecting employees from certain kinds of workplace situations you'd see elsewhere more commonly (almost like a union but not really lol). plus if you're disabled - or a vet - it might just be the only job you can get due to mandated preferential hiring.

Thanking you. I had forgotten about the whole retirement thing in particular.

im not mad at you or attacking (just want to put the disclaimer out in case i seem hangry) but of all the things to get upset about.... those planes are from the the 70s and you couldn't even give them away when they were brand new lmao. the bulk of the money going to afghan's air infrastructure was to make sure that we could move away from the supply convoy nonsense that got people blown away for years to being able to facilitate a functional air supply framework instead. also, we didn't want to use our shit to move their stuff for obvious reasons. training and handmedown equipment for a sustainment element, no matter the quality, is important because its not a job any current standing military is truly equipped to do long-term. if contractors were really trying to hustle there - and god knows there's plenty of cases where they have openly - then there would've been an order for something actually nice. not something that isn't even good enough for the italians
"why did we scrap them then? they still had use"
ask iraq what happens when you don't scrap military vehicles and infrastructure before you pull out
