By FermentedFungi Go To PostDon't be so condescending, I'm not discrediting your job or what you did, you might have been rewarded but that is not always the case. Of course there's departments that handle internal affairs but as we can see in cases with law enforcement and the military, the outcomes do not always side with actual justice. I know this is old news but I just heard about this dude https://www.nytimes.com/2015/01/22/us/supreme-court-sides-with-fired-air-marshal-in-whistle-blower-case.html, and this isn't even that crazy of a thing. The idea that whistleblowers are getting snatched out of their beds at night is the problem.
Especially when it's damn near incentivized - which is what people always run around. Officers will fight each other for the bullet point of kicking people out or reworking a shit budget. The biggest problem with reporting is upper levels getting bits and pieces instead of a brick to the head with a signature box filled out. *And ofc people investigating themselves and finding nothing wrong* Most stuff never even makes it to a reporter and it's not like they're even halfway decent at reporting the shit they actually do get anymore...
The stuff that makes the news and the people who want to be there are not indicative of the overall state of whistleblowers nor is the number proportionate. No one will deny that these things happen ofc but the idea that the only way to address issues such as warcrimes is to do what Manning, Assange, or Snowden did is just the product of romanticism.
So you're just taking issue with the romanticizing of it, which I never did and would agree that the news loves to sensationalize events to the point where the actual details are lost. There's always going to be a gradient of abuses of power and some will always gain more attention. I'm not calling Assange some some sort martyr, the dude turned out to be shitty person who did want to cultivate some sort of fame but it doesn't change the evidence that was put out by wikileaks. I think it's more of a point that you can report on individual instances but you will get targeted when you start getting close to actually exposing war crimes or structural problems. Again this is all fresh we'll just have to wait and see what are the ramifications.

And saying you'll be targeted for whistleblowing is such a ridiculous, drummed up generalization... It's the anti-vaccination of oversight and protections. Yes, there's the most remote chance that you are one of the millions who hits all the checkboxes of being the target of a conspiracy and cover for up. But odds are doing your job won't give you autism.

US war crimes in Iraq are dime a dozen though.
By DY_nasty Go To PostI'm taking an issue with the idea that there's even a slight perception that assange is a good guy or did the right thing 😂At this point you're just purposely being dense and trying to use inane metaphors to dunk on the internet. The list of whistle blowers who were prosecuted throughout the last century is easily accessible but even when the government is exposed ala Iran-Contra, the offenders are never actually punished.

And because you have no list of whistleblowers and people who reported through other channels you've got no other option but to fall in with the idea that absolutely nothing of significance must occur? That's running with the part of the story you like and can easily work with.
It's ridiculous to assume that only the worst case scenarios exist by using only that brand of information. In any other context you'd call it a joke too. Especially where the details of such events can directly harm more people than the specified incident itself. Why would that info leave house cmon lol

One example is Daniel Ellsberg who released the Pentegon Papers and would get indicted for said action and then later beat the government. My main critique is not so much on how Assange is being treated but how this always plays out. War criminals will never be tried for anything but those who report on it to outside channels will. The Bush admin fabricated info and openly lied to the people to start a war on false pretenses but none of them will ever be held accountable for the deaths of civilians and the destruction caused in Iraq. Similar with the Pentagon Papers and Vietnam, multiple administrations knew they were fighting a losing war but kept it up for... reasons all the while draining resources and costing lives in the process. We won't see eye to eye if you feel that the war is vindicated to begin with.

Wikileaks did well for what, the first 2 years, and then had a fucking heel turn. They leaked out the names of Afghans working as informants, Chinese human rights activists, and for fuck knows what reason, publishing data about the personal information of hundreds of Saudi Arabians, including rape victims, mental health patients, and the name of a saudi citizen who was arrested for being gay in the ultraconservative state.
That's not including working part time as Russia's soundboard. Held up the globalists/deep state theory and accusing the MH17 flight of being shot down by the rebels instead of the opposite.

it says a lot that people will make sure to pump breaks during a live mass shooting "make sure we don't get the wrong person, we could ruin someone's life" but that's just completely missing from the equation when it comes to stuff on a much, much larger scale such as warcrimes. there are more people involved, more moving parts, more victims, more witting and unwitting supporters, more questions, so on and so forth that it should be blatantly obvious as to why you don't just throw that shit out on the internet and pat yourself on the back. and it plays directly into the bolded too - why would you further publicize war criminals and invite more reprisals toward those uninvolved or leave out the information that other like minded individuals would look to learn from or copy? the irony is that its handled exactly how most want the media to deal with the worst kinds of violent criminals now
don't air their names. protect the victims. make sure the uninvolved and unassociated are protected. reinforce stopgaps against future incidents without putting a neon sign on the new security additions. pretty much how a lot of shit aired on repeat should go....
i'll never say the shit is perfect but the idea that potential whistleblowers or those who push transparency above all should even see Assange's path as an option at all is built on the *solely* on the idea that there was no other choice and that the stakes demanded it. all the while completely dismissing all the shit that an entire generation went through to make sure that every gov employee sits through a dozen mandatory meetings on exactly where to go if shit smells funny.

Assange has and always will be a piece of shit just for not giving a shit whose info he puts out there. To say nothing of his own rapey actions in Sweden.

Self important jackass is too soft a term to use on Assange. The man put hundreds at risk of their lives in authoritarian states because he could.

In a way, I honestly believe Trump may just be the best President of my lifetime, just due to how boldly polarizing he has been willing to be.
I hate to say it, but in a way, I might actually miss him, cuz once he's gone the Democrats are going to start bringing their bullshit back into politics.
He has really exposed a lot of the civility and "norms" to just be the bullshit that it was always going to be.
He makes Dick Cheney look like Pussy Cheney.
I want to see Trump shoot Cheney in the face while goose hunting or quail hunting or whatever the fuck these weird fucks do.
I still remember when people made fun of him because he had asked for shit to be summed up in charts and graphs instead of having to read shit, but in a way, there's actually some virtue to asking for shit to get straight to the point.
He took KISS to the ultimate level, especially at his level of governance.
We are learning who the world leader as President, and what the world leader as Country, really are when completely unhinged, or certainly more unhinged than normal, and nobody in the world can do a damn thing about it.
We basically get to tell the rest of the world who went to Oxford or Harvard or whatever the fuck to enjoy eating our shit.
Fuck you, Rhodes Scholars. Eat shit.
Trump should honestly be memorialized, and I hope people are ready to help that cause.
One day there will certainly be a SLAENT thread: "Trump OT - Greatest HIts"

More effective for his side than Obama was for our side.
I’ve seen Trump get every Republican in line and even go after John McCain over a vote.
Where was Obama rallying the support by going after Joe Lieberman??? Nowhere. Most ineffective President ever. Wasted eight years of everybody’s life.
By DY_nasty Go To PostThey not trying to hear it 😬 too soon
I simply failed to recognize Trump’s election as the immune response to Democrats’ ineffectual political correctness bullshit.
It was so much easier to recognize Obama’s election as the immune response to George W. Bush’s running up of the national debt and all the other things Republicans were doing back then to lose enough trust by mismanaging everything on top of their culture war.
Trump’s election was just not as easy to recognize as an immune response. Everybody thought Republicans were still a disastrous joke back then in 2016.
Now we see they’re no joke at all. And better yet, they’re managing to make the Democrats look like the joke now. It’s just amazing how thoroughly the script has flipped.
