Didn't read the article, but how are they defining urban. In "Greater Appalachia," I find it hard to believe urban areas went +15-25 Romney.
3 states up from Florida.
It's really good analysis.
I wish they had data from 2016. I suspect the far west region would look different as well as Yankeedom. What's interesting is Rural areas in the south west (el Norte) region voted more blue than urban areas. I could imagine that holding true in 2016. I would also be curious about NC in 2018 using this analysis.

Working with one of my research collaborators, Will Mitchell of NBT Solutions, a digital mapping and geoservices firm in Portland, Maine, I sorted the county-level results of the past three presidential elections via both “nation” and the National Center for Health Statistics’ six-tiered urban-to-rural spectrum, which categorizes every U.S. county by level of urbanity, from those that form the core of major metropolitan regions (1) to the completely rural (6), allowing an examination of the full spectrum of political behavior. I then compared the results for each type of county within each nation, revealing the degree to which urbanity, sub-urbanity, and country life alters political behavior both within and between the regional cultures.
The top-level results compare urban (or “metropolitan”) counties — NCHS’s categories one through four — with rural (or “non-metropolitan”) counties, categories five and six. They deal a devastating blow to the urban versus rural thesis.
One big flaw with this analysis is that Exurbs and Suburbs exists on a separate spectrum to how we examine the urban vs rural divide.
The first thing that jumps out to me when I looked at their methodology is that if you sort Categories 1-4 into Urban and 5-6 into Rural, you're putting an awfully large number of people in Urban and not very many people in the Rural bucket, which creates the split you see here where the "Urban" chart is essentially the chart for the electorate.

This is why I wanted to see 2016 and 2018 data because the GOP is losing ground in those areas bad right now.

JOHNSON Moonlights for £800k CORBYN Just Does the Job
Boris Johnson was the highest earning MP in the last Parliament – claiming nearly £800,000 in second jobs, royalties and speaking fees, new data analysis has revealed.Bolded is especially lol what a bellend.
Johnson’s total earnings – including his salaries as Foreign Secretary, Prime Minister and Member of Parliament or Uxbridge and South Ruislip – came to almost £1 million.
At £795,867, Johnson’s “second job” earnings were almost £200,000 ahead of his nearest male rival, Nicholas Soames – who earned £606,419 – and more than six-and-a-half times those of the highest paid female MP, Nadine Dorries. This was on top of Johnson’s parliamentary salary of £77,000 a year.
The “second jobs” figures have been compiled by DataLobo, using the Parliamentary Register of Financial Interests.
Considering that the Prime Minister’s extracurricular income was only for 13 months of the 30 month life of the Parliament, the figures are even more remarkable.
Two annual reports for the Foreign Office show that, as Foreign Secretary from 2016 to 2018, Johnson received £98,000 including a £21,000 pension contribution on top of his parliamentary salary. He also received a £16,876.25 severance payment after he resigned from the position following the Brexit row with Theresa May last July.
As Prime Minister, he is earning £13,166 a month – a figure which he is said to have told friends is not enough to live on.
It's not perfect, but I think it still illustrates pretty well, that not all rural and urban areas are the same.

California’s wildfires have grown so costly and damaging that insurance companies — a homeowner’s last hope when disaster strikes — have increasingly been canceling people’s policies in fire-prone parts of the state.https://www.nytimes.com/2019/12/05/climate/california-fire-insurance-climate.html
On Thursday, however, California took the highly unusual step of banning the practice, a decision that exacerbates the insurance industry’s miscalculation of the cost of climate change.
The new policy imposes a one-year moratorium, preventing insurers from dropping customers in or alongside ZIP codes struck by recent wildfires. The moratorium covers at least 800,000 homes around the state. The state has also asked insurers to voluntarily stop dropping customers anywhere in California because of fire risk for one year.
“People are losing insurance even after decades with the same company and no history of filing claims,” Ricardo Lara, California’s insurance commissioner, said in a statement. “Hitting the pause button on issuing non-renewals due to wildfire risk will help California’s insurance market stabilize and give us time to work together on lasting solutions.”
One consequence of global warming is that it intensifies natural disasters such as fires and floods, but insurers have struggled to anticipate the spiraling costs. Natural disasters in 2017 and 2018 generated a record $219 billion in payouts worldwide, according to Swiss Re, a leading insurance company.

RUDY GIULIANI WON'T SAY WHY HE'S IN UKRAINE AND REFUSES TO CONFIRM HIS LOCATION
President Donald Trump's attorney Rudy Giuliani has refused to explain why he has traveled to Ukraine this week, even as House investigators pore over his boss's alleged efforts to extort the government in Kiev to interfere in the 2020 elections.
According to The New York Times, Giuliani traveled to Kiev Wednesday to meet with former Ukrainian prosecutors, including Viktor Shokin, whose 2016 firing sits at the heart of corruption conspiracy theories leveled at 2020 Democratic candidate and former Vice President Joe Biden.
Speaking with "America This Week" host Eric Bolling on Wednesday, Giuliani accidentally confirmed his presence in Ukraine though refused to say why he was there.😂
"Well, I can't really describe it…I can't even confirm it," Giuliani said when asked about his purpose in the country.
"All I can tell you is that I am doing today—all day, and all night maybe—what I've been doing for a year and a half. I'm representing my client as a lawyer."

lol a bit Trump related:
A Russian immigrant and a cabdriver’s son who got his nickname by building the city’s biggest fleet, Mr. Freidman was a primary architect of some of the tactics used to build the bubble, according to records and interviews. At the height of the market, he had accumulated $525 million in assets. He befriended the filmmaker Spike Lee, the baseball star Mo Vaughn and Mayor Bill de Blasio. His outsize antics and lavish spending often landed him on Page Six, the New York Post’s gossip column.https://www.nytimes.com/2019/12/05/nyregion/nyc-taxi-medallions-freidman.html
As a generation of cabdrivers became trapped in overwhelming debt, Mr. Freidman created offshore trusts that protected some of his money when the bubble burst, records show. While his business partners lost millions because of his tax fraud, Mr. Freidman avoided prison by cooperating with a federal investigation into one of his partners, Michael D. Cohen, President Trump’s former lawyer.
“He hurt so many people in so many different ways,” said David Pollack, the former head of the Committee for Taxi Safety, an association of fleet owners that once included Mr. Freidman. “Your headline could be: ‘The man who brought down the taxi industry.’”
