The writer of Oscar-tipped film Green Book has apologised for a 2015 tweet in which he said he saw Muslims in New Jersey celebrating the 9/11 attacks.
Nick Vallelonga tweeted his support for Donald Trump, who said he had seen "thousands and thousands" cheering - a claim that's been widely discredited.
Vallelonga wrote that Mr Trump was "100% correct", but has now said sorry "for the hurt I have caused".

I always thought that was an interesting case. If saying you renounce Islam while in certain regions is dangerous, then you've got a better case for asylum than the vast majority of economic immigrants. More or less at least.
There's a lot of weird nuances like that... Like being wanted for a crime in a country where torture is legal or accepted. Really gets weird.

I think it's fantastic Cortez is quoting a psychotic superhero that was made to satirize right wingers.

Hell, Christian refugees from China is a thing and I dont see the difference with this. You don't see how Christian refugees from China get asylum in western countries? I think thats pretty self explanatory. You don't see many Western countries stepping up to take in the Muslim ones from China.
Not saying no of course.
Just feeling that economic immigrants getting shit on or otherwise misrepresented is gonna keep getting worse in comparison to stuff like this. You get into this weird dilemma of if beliefs > ability to work/provide/etc

A country must be really shit if it absolves refugees who seek a new home because they are persecuted from their own country for their beliefs.
Economic immigrants are different in the eyes of the law because they aren’t exactly fleeing because their lives are in imminent danger, though. The girl in question is seeking refuge because her family back home will murder her due to the fact that honour killings are more or less considered okay in the KSA.
@Flutter: she already got accepted and is flying to Canada now. The difference between China and KSA is that no one wants to piss off China.

People have no problem saying that economic immigration doesn't count, which is kinda just... I don't want to say disingenuous, but it's at least not properly recognized or readily accepted.

A little thankful for it because chinese muslim food is incredibly underrated.

About if we pissed off China about it, well that's what diplomatic negotiations are for.

By DY_nasty Go To PostOh I get that, but it's not like poverty won't kill you and your kids all the same.I see what you mean. I reckon the barrier of becoming a “refugee” is pretty high specfically for keeping people out like economic migrants, rather than letting others in.

i don't see how one asylum seeker is going to influence canadian immigration policy which for decades is centered around economic migration.
Most of these immigrants who do manage to get in my country mostly live in some of the worst places I've been to.
One of the biggest wholesale markets in my state is absolutely filthy. A place that you can smell the stink around half a mile away. I've seen ditches filled with some of the worst smelling black muck that's bubbling with god knows what gas. This week someone we saw a rubbish bag by the side of the road that was torn open. It was dark and I thought I stepped on some old onions... turn out if was chicken heads.
And then you see Rohingya and Bangladeshi children play by the side of the road in the afternoon and well...

By HasphatsAnts Go To Posti don't see how one asylum seeker is going to influence canadian immigration policy which for decades is centered around economic migration.Nah, there's immigration for compassionate reasons. Hell, I googled and Canada definitely has that rule in place.
By Perfect Blue Go To PostI see what you mean. I reckon the barrier of becoming a “refugee” is pretty high specfically for keeping people out like economic migrants, rather than letting others in.The US policy for immigration is misrepresented often. It's why there's this push to label so many as people on the run from crime - which is just... Extreme poverty and crime and corruption are the same big package. The tools to wrap it are bs like exploitation and divisive methods involving discrimination (religion, ethnicity, etc). But that's gonna head into a much bigger tangent
Brexit is one of those things that I understand conceptually. Meaning the ramifications to remain, leave / deal, and leave / no deal. However I have zero Fucking clue how all this happens at a procedural level. Confusing as fuck for me. Like how is remain even still possible? It seems like that’s the most likely thing next to leave / no deal 🙅‍♂️

If referendums aren't binding I'm assuming leave / no deal is still a thing because politicians are too chicken shit to go against the exiters? I can't see how that is a serious option otherwise????
