By IWMTB19 Go To Post 50% at the rim is horrible for a guard you dumbfuck, those numbers are highest percentage for guards on all shots within 8 feet and shots from 3-8 feet are low percentage. For fuck's sake, Trey Burke is right at 50% at the rim. Dragic is at 70% at the rim, Wiggins at 66%, Isaiah and Parker are often near 70%.
MCW - less than 5 feet is 51.6%. Westbrook is 52.8% That's not a colossal difference.
When you take out all the dudes that shoot 1 shot a game at the rim that are skewing the numbers due to small sample sizes, MCW is more or less around average. Maybe slightly below. But he's definitely not "horrible". Derrick Rose is at 53.9. CJ Mcullom's at 40.
Etc. etc.
But in all honesty, arguing this stuff with you is utterly pointless because you see a guy that shoots it at 70% and like a child drawn by shiny objects, lose any and all sense of objectivity.
Keep hammering out idiotic college draft predictions though, you the man!
I shouldn't have to explain this to you but I will, because fuck you that's why. My point was that Goldsberry didn't adjust his charts and make them position specific. Thus a PF shooting 53% is above average and a PG shooting 49% is below average. I'm not here to defend MCW or any clown on that list, just indicating the obvious of him not adjusting for position before writing his article.
why would you adjust for position? He didn't adjust the 3 point shooting for position either. Why? Because it doesn't matter, its about scoring efficiency.
you are also confusing "less than 5 feet" with "restricted area" which is at the rim. 50% at the rim is.. bad.
By livefromkyoto Go To PostHe invented the Kobe Assist, which is maybe the greatest backhanded compliment in the history of analytics:

Because comparing how effective Dwight is at the rim vs. Trey Burke is an idiotic exercise. That's why. Next you'll tell us Centers that don't average above 6 apg are bad passers because 6 apg is so average leaguewide (or whatever number the average is that centers obviously don't hit).
He should have adjusted 3 point shooting as well. Comparing Nerlens Noels skills to Steph Curry's isn't a good indicator of whether or not Nerlens Noel could shoot. Now if the average center can't hit 3's above a 30% clip, they should stop shooting 3's. But it doesn't tell anyone how bad they are at being shooters at their position.

Of all the guys in the league, he's way way down the list of players I'd expect to get in this kind of situation.
Wonder if there's a stipulation in his contract about injuries sustained in off-court activity?

i didn't confuse at the rim with under 5 feet, NBA.com only has "less than 5 feet". Wherever the hell Goldsberry got his information from, I can't compare and filter and sort through so I went with the next best thing. Which includes some floaters as well, a patented PG shot.

Considering you've never once provided anything even remotely insightful. Your opinion is utter trash. But 3 Utah Jazz fans that probably couldn't dribble without falling on their faces or draw up a single offensive sequence from any of their own teams playcalls aren't the kind of people who should offer opinions about basketball.

Back to the Kobe Assist.
Ask Tex Winter about the “Kobe Assist.” One of the Triangle principals is getting the ball on the rim, even if it’s off a missed shot.
I love it because it reminds us that this is not a new idea, and basketball tacticians have noticed this effect for a long time. All missed shots are not bad.
http://courtvisionanalytics.com/the-kobe-assist-deleted-scenes/
None of this is new. Kobe's mentioned it himself years ago. It was definitely part and parcel of the Lakers strategy, especially when both Bynum and Pau were in the game. If Kobe can draw a double team 20 feet from the basket and shoot a patented fadeaway, those two bigs crashing the basket would greatly increase the chances of an offensive rebound.
I'm not going to apologize because you've been trained to think of basketball in idiotic efficiency segments that have nothing to do with strategy or play calling or execution or what the hell the player's job is.
But "Kobe get a good quality look and get the ball to the basket, if you miss, Pau and Bynum will be there to clean it up" is absolutely what the Lakers run out of tons of timeouts. It led to the OKC game 6 game winner in 2010, the Phx game 5 one in 2010. And tons of other ones. It's literally what he's instructed to do.

A) This usually happens when I write a lot, or make several points in one post and then someone latches on to one.
B) Me on here is like a Liberal on a Tea Party website. The Hive mentality of everyone on here is to think of basketball purely in analytics forms and to ignore approaching the game from any other perspective at all. I mean, the reason people respect IWMTB is because he kind of sort of seems like he's good at math. The dude's never presented any argument at all that's not self contained with analytics and most his predictions are ass backwards. But he's respected because his methadology is valued. Same reason why Hinkie's respected. Doesn't matter if you're a bottom feeding team. Trash Phil, Praise Hinkie. Same record.
C) some of what you're saying is correct in that I lose my patience with perceived ignorance, then I'm sure my posts become longer and harder to follow.

I haven't read the articles but I always assumed a "Kobe assist," where a big gets one off the offensive board, is when a player penetrates into the lane and draws the big man defender, takes a tough layup type shot that misses, but allows for an easy putback for the bigs.
Kobe never invented this and it's not close to new, but some players like Kobe caused this action quite often.

By Jeff-DSA Go To Post My favorite part of the "Kobe assist" is that it implies that it's novel for a big to go for an offensive rebound after a shooter attempts to make a basketball shot and to try to score their own basketball shot after collecting said rebound.
The only thing that matters is strategy. Are you consistent with your strategy. There are benefits and drawbacks to having two corner shooters. There are benefits and drawbacks to crashing the offensive boards, there are benefits and drawbacks to overpassing.
The Triangle has always stressed offensive rebounding position in EVERY shot attempt, creating penetration behind the initial line of defense with either a pass, a drive, or a shot. The drive is actually the least favored method in the triangle, that's why they always start with a pass to either low or high post and then operate out of there. Rather than run a steady diet of high pick and rolls meant to encourage the drive.
D'Antoni never built a dynasty because he had a gimmick offense. He sacrificed too much for offensive efficiency. This is just about knowing what the pros and cons of each thing are. But you can't blame Channing Frye for shooting 300 3's in his system any more than you can blame Pau and Bynum for crashing the boards and not getting back on D in the Triangle.
I think people are more enamored and concerned with winning multiple chips playing in the Triangle, then getting 2 more fga per game without it. But that's just a hunch.

All I remember arguing about the lockout stuff was that I thought Billy Hunter did a good job, all things considered, compared to what the other sports leagues were getting. Also supported the players getting as much as they could over the owners.
But I know the difference between a majority and a plurality. So I'm not sure what the confusion was there.
