By rodeoclown Go To Post I legitimately felt bad for Nick Anderson reading about his free throw misses in the Finals. Dude is so haunted by it 20 years later.

I dealt with that. I never said anything about it for years, but emotionally, mentally that bothered me for a long time. It made it seem like I lost the game. It was because of me. I’ll never forget people would write articles: “Nick the brick.” “Nick choked.” As a young player, that changed my game. I stopped being aggressive because I was always thinking, What if I miss? That bothered me for years.
Heart breaking.
Even then-Lakers coach Del Harris had trouble recognizing what the trade would mean for the Lakers’ future when it was first announced. "Del felt with Sedale Threatt and Anthony Peeler, he had the best backcourt in the NBA from one through four," a source close to Harris told the New York Daily News. "Now he only has two proven guards and he’s not happy."
LOL DEL HARRIS
By HasphatsAnts Go To Post Nick Anderson is proof that while "Clutch" may not exist. "Anti-Clutch" certainly does.
Not only is this statement wrong, it makes no sense. If there's no clutch, how can there be an opposite of clutch?
Clutch is absolutely a thing. Not everyone can take that pressure and elevate their performance in those situations. That feeling of the whole game being on your shoulders, with X amount of time left and all eyes on you? Very few people can handle that. 90-95% of people would fall into the anti-clutch category
"Clutch" makes no sense because if you could play at a higher level in the last five minutes than you usually do... Why don't you just play at that level normally?
"Anti-clutch" makes sense because anxiety disorders and fear obviously exist (as I know extremely well).
The SportsBusiness Journal on Thursday reported that Nike is near a deal to replace Adidas as the uniform provider for the NBA. The league is expected to announce a new apparel partner this month.

I think clutch is more of anti-anti-clutch than anything else. It's players that can actually knock down shots and hit their free throws in the final minutes of a close game at least as much as they would in a blowout. CP3 used to be great for that, but I think he's a bit psychologically shaken after last year's playoffs combined with the fact that everybody knows that he's going to take the last shot if he's on the court, so defenses don't have to respect his passing as much as they normally do.
Like, to demonstrate "clutch" you basically have to be demonstrably better in "clutch" situations than any other time, which is insane because all the best players are already exceedingly good throughout the course of the game. You've got nowhere to go but down anyway.

because context?
No one goes 100% from the start at anything. Because you would burn yourself out in 3 years max if you treated the first 5 minutes of a preseason game the same as the last 5 minutes of Game 7 in the Finals?
By DY_nasty Go To Posteh.... I believe in Clutch
Who doesn't really?
By RBK Go To PostWho doesn't really?
heavy stats ppl
i can understand their arguments but there isn't really a stat showing what people do or how it effects the game when they really turn it on
Defining clutch "lacks performance harming anxiety at end of games/playoffs" makes sense and is certainly something that exists, but the definition I think is used most of the time I'm still not a huge fan of.
"Clutch" also doesn't seem to have any predictive value for future "clutchness." CP3 dominated the last five minutes of games for a couple of years and now he's played like the worst crunch time player in the league. Melo was called clutch for a really long time and I think he's gone like 2-21 on his recent game winner attempts. Harden is coming off an all-time great season in the last five minutes of games, but Harden has been terrible in college and NBA posteasons? How does that make any sense with regards to being clutch?
Guys like Malone or the Admiral or KG may have games that weren't well suited to end game defenses or they may have suffered from anxiety problems in those situations, but a lot of players declared "clutch" or "choker" feel like they're called that based on just being randomly good or bad in a few moments.
clutch is a thing, its just hard to be consistent enough at it throughout your career to keep the label
Ray Allen and Horry for example are a couple of guys that kept their rep up over the years
By RBK Go To PostBack on the Harden trade, but can anyone explain to me why Kevin Martin didn't stay in OKC?
Wolves offered more money than we were willing to at the time.
In retrospect we should have kept him.

Unless Perkins/Ibaka extensions were up next, don't see how Presti couldn't match 4/28 million.
My memory is fuzzy, but I thought he even got more than that.

"All players will be subjected to three random, unannounced tests annually -- two during the season and once in the offseason."
Wade should retire already.
pretty sure bron is already on top of cycling off of it given some of his injury stuff this year and weight fluctuation
rose though...

Yeah, so did I. Seemed like Minny was overpaying at the time but I bet Presti wishes he had matched.
He might have gone there anyways so he could start and play for Adelman.
By knux-future Go To Post Jokes on you Silver, we have nothing but toothpicks here.
With your luck Noel and Embiid will get busted the day after their first use.
I don't presume to know that "clutch" doesn't exist, but I just find a lot of the conversation around it asinine. Like, Dirk was labeled a "choker" and "not clutch" between his 07 meltdown and 2011 title when he's been demonstrably one of the 5 best crunch time scorers through out this period. Fundamentally nothing about him has changed, but somehow the narrative flipped. He was always clutch because that one legged fadeaway was unstoppable whether it's the second quarter or at the buzzer.
The conversation's too steeped in narrative and not facts.
Clutch exists. And efficiency stats are irrelevant. Missing a 30 footer doesn't prove anything any more than making an open layup does.
Simply because you make a shot doesn't mean you weren't feeling anxiety, and simply because you miss doesn't mean you are.
As someone else has said, if you don't believe in clutch, you've never once played sports at any meaningful level. I've legit air balled shots because I felt anxious. I've passed up shots for the same reason. Other times I make it in Rythm. But I'm not dependable, have no idea when the anxiety will come through. Dudes like Jordan and Kobe and Dirk seem from the outside like they've either eliminated anxiety, or are capable of overriding it.
And that doesn't have to be the case from day one. Kobe air balled all those shots as a rookie against the jazz. Dirk went through some growing pains. Magic Johnson was Tragic Johnson for some big finals games. But on balance, they were able to perform effectively for the majority of their careers and reach high peaks in part because of it.

I play ball with his son (or at least one of them). Suposedly he's going to USC next year. Let me tell you, he has the same mental genes. You can take him out of his game so fucking easily, it's astounding. Spitting image.
