Most of this hinges on Karl inquiring about trading Cousins, but Karl has no power to do so. The people with power are pro-Cousins. It's far more likely that Karl would get canned before Cousins gets traded. They just did a highly questionable salary dump to build a roster better fitting for Cousins.

The Kings fucked up firing Malone and then flubbed the coaching situation after that.

However, the Rudy Gay trade worked out when it was "dumb Kings". The salary dump trade was bad, but they did end up getting a lot of quality free agents after people said nobody would play for Sac. They were "anti analytics" and then they just hired Roland Beech. (Which had far less articles than parting ways with Dean Oliver.) Signing Darren Collison was a mistake, and Collison was "terrible at defense", and Collison's bang for the buck is great, and his defense was better than IT.

Point is, mind the narrative. News tells fairy tales these days. When they let Oliver go, I speculated that it was due to the Denver clique. Others wanted to tell the legend of Vlade Divac and how he hates big data. Know the difference between news and fairy tales.

Which is why you won't see:

Until the Kings win, and when they do, you'll see the same bad reports using the same info or lack of info they had to weave a new narrative.

I think they overpaid Rondo. They may have had to. I imagine some other team was offering, but I doubt a team with cap was offering.

However, it's one year deal and they managed to fill out the roster with the rest of the cap space. The risk of the contract cost isn't that big. It's the idea of signing him that is any actual issue.

The problem is that you're comparing paying Rondo 9.5 for one year because Boogie and Gay love him to trading away an elite player (that you just paid Rondo to appease) before they enter their prime to appease a coach who has maybe two years left in him. Even as a fairy tale, the story doesn't make sense.

the story wouldn't make sense if karl didn't have a history of this and there weren't incredibly classless moves made by the org recently. you have to make up stories for anything sacramento is doing to make sense. for the past 4 years, there hasn't been a single year that's lined up with the next or previous in terms of long-term planning.

doesn't even need to be a good plan (boston) or a bad plan (toronto) or a plan that got thrown out midway for a good gamble (hornets) or a shitty one (phoenix)

I am a big fan of Conley. Hope he makes the all-star team at some point. Problem is that the Grizz don't get a lot of TV, and so there's less pressure to reward their players. If they're going to get just one all-star a year, it's going to be Gasol, even if I think Conley is just as important to them.

So if Rondo is good (he won't be), doesn't he just bounce to a good organization with higher championship aspirations.

Possible. However, Collison is good and under contract. You just get another PG in FA or trade.

I'm not really sure what Rondo's plan is right now. The sentiment behind the odd setup of the Kings is that nobody can afford to fuck things up. Rondo won't get paid again if he screws up. Karl won't get another coaching job if he gets fired. Gay and Cousins are under contract. The only way everyone gets what they want is if they go out and win.
