Give Mr "I'm not Johnny Hustle" a 10 year contract and pray to the baseball gods you're the first long term MLB contract that works out.
By blackace Go To PostAnd 25Exactly. They're locking up his primes years (26-32) for $30m a year, which he's easily worth if he continues his career averages. Really, the only bad years of his deal should be the last three. He's probably not in San Diego at that point anyway.

By Fenderputty Go To PostGive Mr "I'm not Johnny Hustle" a 10 year contract and pray to the baseball gods you're the first long term MLB contract that works out.A-Rod worked... he produced just as advertised. Stanton has been living up to his contract... even old ass Cano was producing what they paid him for...
Can't confuse not being able to build a team around a superstar with the contract not working out...
Y'all know that free agents typically cost like $8m a year per WAR right? Machado is a 6-7 WAR player. His deal is fine and he's probably underpaid the first few seasons. If they don't win, it's not his fault.
If you want to take shots at anybody, Harper is certainly going to be vastly overpaid considering he's only been at Manny's level for one season in his career. (And is a pretty lousy defensive player.)

No one will care about the cost of his contract if win it all. Never mind that dude is a legit superstar about to enter his prime.

PLUS, the dude is an dirty asshole who could check out by July

By Perfect Blue Go To PostYou can only really decide in retrospect how good a contract is. Like I said, if Machado helps them get a World Series win it'll be a guaranteed success. I don't care what happens this season. That's one of my issues though. Padres legit are not even a playoff team at this point; typically you shell out that ridiculous money as the final or next-to-final piece. They legit need their trio or offensive rookies to flourish + get two Top of the rotation guys + have one or two other starters take a big step forward in their performances. Manny has shown in the past he's not really a patient guy and if they start losing fast and for awhile he's not going to be a positive influence.
I get the issue people have with Bryce; but you can at least see his potential. He played out of position and really at odds with his stance and himself last year, he usually is an excellent defender and attacks the ball like few batters I've ever seen. Hopping he doesn't go to the Phillies because he'd hit 50 HRs in that bandbox.
By The Frankman Go To PostManny has shown in the past he's not really a patient guy and if they start losing fast and for awhile he's not going to be a positive influence. This is absolutely not how his last year and a half in Baltimore went, even as the O's were cratering around him.
By Dark PhaZe Go To PosthowOh, that's easy: he's 27 and likely going to be in the MVP discussion every year for the next six years. Gotta pay the man if they want to stay relevant, and they do because they can't have another decade of nobody coming out to Coors.
but…how and why?
By blackace Go To PostWonder if Frankman thinks it's a bad signing?Hell of a lot better than Machado that's for sure.

MLB Network's Jon Heyman reports that Bryce Harper is headed to the Phillies.
ESPN's Jeff Passan hears that it will be a 13-year, $330 million contract with no opt-outs, a new North American sports record for overall dollars committed to one player. There was a last-minute push by the Giants and Dodgers, but reports have pegged the Phillies as the highest bidder for weeks now and they've finally got a signature from the 26-year-old superstar.
Like... why did the signings take so long then? GMs waited and still massively overpaid these guys.
I need to see the guarantees and bonuses on this. I assume there's an opt-out point after 5 or so?
Oh... my GOD.
jeffpassan...
Outfielder Bryce Harper is a Philadelphia Phillie, agreeing to a record-breaking 13-year, $330 million contract. The deal does not include any opt-outs or deferred money but does have a no-trade clause. If Bryce Harper wants, he’ll be a Phillie for life.
Oh... my GOD.
By Pac-12 Go To Post330 over 13? Fucking hell, Bryce, didn't you notice the AAVs for Machado and Arenado? This idiot voluntarily gave up opt-out power... his freedom to choose... for "stability".
IN PHILADELPHIA??? Holy fuck this dude is going to be booed in June for only hitting .298 with 19 HRs.
Somone made a joke on twitter that there’s likely kids not born yet who will be tossing batteries at him in year 13 and I died lol

I… I dunno. Was Harper just so tired of being a free agent?

Apparently, yes. Was watching MLB Tonight earlier and they had a statement from his agent that he basically wanted to sign one contract and play his career in one last city. Didn't want to move again with a family.
That Dodgers AAV, though...
Guaranteed money is literally always the way to go. All that matters is the total dollar amount on that contract. He could have taken a gamble to go with the Dodgers and end up flopping then he would be out a lot of money.
He took the best move going to Philly, IMO.

I woulda taken the giants but that’s probably because they’re both insane gobs of money from my perspective and I would rather live there

Like I said ... from my perspective it’s all insane money.
Also Trout probably could have gotten more if he went on market which is insanity
By Pac-12 Go To PostHey, Bryce, about that "record"Considering how good he is this is underpaying him.
Yeah.
To give you an idea of how good he is, last season he was statistically better than Harper and Machado combined.
