Here is a basic starter list for those jumping into the genre for the first time. It's not a top ten list, nor is it in any particular order. It's also missing somebodies' classics (as things like this usually do). However, there is enough to get your feet wet. We can help with the rest.

Also, nobody is trying to hear about how horror ain't been shit to you, since you were swimming in whomever's nutsack. Piff stay dropping.
Coming in 2016 (unless…)
I'll try and keep this updated and add trailers to titles when they become available. If there is anything that I should add, drop a line and it shall be done. This is pretty Merica centric, so if there is a foreign film that should be added, plz let me know.

No expert by any means, but a good crash course could be...
You could start with the traditional slasher genre of Halloween and move on from there. Or you can move into the religious-based possession stuff like The Exorcist. Even the original Alien movie has a lot of great horror tropes that plays off the suspense and environment extremely well.
The Ring series (both the original and the remake).
I sometimes still SIMP over that series. (No, SIMP isn't code for lovingsteam, it's "shit in my pants"). No, seriously, The Ring can go fuck it self. That shit ruins childhoods.
And i sorta guess it depends where you want to define horror. Personally, I'd include the whole Aliens series. Yeah, it's scifi too, but god damn that's also horror.
Then you have more classics like psycho/ the shinning.
You also have Saw/ Final destination.
Silent Hill. Fuck you. Just, fuck you.
Scream? yeah, it's horror, but it's not scary, but entertaining.
The damn VOD release for "It Follows" got delayed. I swear, I don't know what they're doing with this movie. Been missing it at the one theater that plays Indie joints, due to work. Might miss it in theaters.
"A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night", is on VOD I think. That's on the list, as well as "Spring" and "The Voices".
Still waiting on, "Among The Living."
"The Beyond", is releasing on Blu-Ray soon. Classic ish.

one of my favorite horror movies. hits every weakspot for massive damage.
I'm not even claustrophobic, but that movie did a number on my nerves. The scenes leading up to the monsters had me shook. Def one of my favs too.
Shame on the American ending though.
Never got to the sequel.

LOL.
I don't think I've ever seen the rest of the Ring series. Only the first one that released in the states.
I'd definitely include the Alien series. My definition of what horror is, is probably a fair bit looser than most.
Same recommendation I always make in horror threads: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1029234/?ref_=nv_sr_1">Martyrs.

Getting, "Children of The Corn" vibes. Will give it a watch.
I will say, that even in it's simplicity, I haven't seen any of these newer horror movies pull off that, "Lights Out" scare as well as Ponysmasher did in that short. They're not giving it enough time to breath.
You all should watch Cooties and Hellions. They both released recently.
By EldritchTrapStar Go To PostOctober is coming. Anybody trying to go for the 31 Day challenge? My schedule is super busy, but I'm going to put together my list and attempt to clear it.Yeah. I´m going to do it. It´s been an yearly tradition for me. I´ll probably do a Wes Craven marathon during the month.

Also The Ring is awesome, I was just talking about that movie today.
ALSO also The Babadook is probably the best new horror movie I've seen lately, probably one of the best new movies I've seen period. It's on Netflix, go watch it.
By Elchele Go To PostWhat about Rosemary's Baby? I'm planning in watching it this week for the first time. The original is one of the best horror movies of all time. Stay away from the mini-series.

Btw, I thought The Descent was pretty bad.
Looking forward to Crimson Peak in a few weeks--for the imagery more than anything.
By Lupercal Go To PostEvent Horizon always holds a spot dear in my heart for me.I also love it. Shocking that it was made by Paul W. S. Anderson.
By LFMartins86 Go To PostStarting my 2015 October Horror Marathon, any else doing it?I'll do it. Any recommendations?
Watched Rosemary's Baby and I liked the suspense a lot, but after it ended I was like... eh, ok?
for 80s stuff i highly recommend Death Spa, tits and gore galore
By Lambda Go To Posti really enjoyed the POV Maniac remake with FrodoThat Maniac remake was surprisingly good. Really like the original, it had some great scenes.

Death Spa seems like something I would enjoy.
Teeth, also a dark comedy, is about a girl with teeth in her vagina. Expect to see multiple severed penises.
Dead Girl is just a straight up horror picture about some guys who gang rape a chained up zombie. Needless to say, she eventually manages to bite one of them.
The V/H/S Franchise always mixed two of my favorite subgenres of horror, the found footage genre and the anthology movies (both will be heavily featured here for the next month).
The found footage movies can provide a more immersive experience to the viewer and as they are normally extremely cheap to make, it gives younger directors an opportunity to make a movie.
Horror is something that sometimes works far better in small doses and anthology type movies are the best way to present short horror movies.
The first V/H/S was a solid anthology with a good connector linking some very entertaining stories with Amateur Night and Tuesday The 17th being my personal favorites. It also had some of the best young horror directors like Adam Wingard (The Guest, You´re Next and currently working on Death Note) and Ti West (The House Of The Devil, The Innkeepers).
V/H/S 2 didn't stray to far from the blueprint created by the first one but this time they called one of the granddaddies of the found footage genre, The Blair Project´s Eduardo Sanchez, who worked on an entertaining zombie fueled Ride In The Park.
While most of the directors had roots in the horror genre, the standout story came from The Raid 1 & 2 director Gareth Evans. Safe Heaven is such a great horror short that it could and should be a feature film on it´s own. Seriously, everyone needs to watch it.
After avoiding Viral for almost a year after all the terrible reviews and impressions I read, I decided to give it a shot on the start of this horror marathon.
Unfortunately the reviews were spot on...
Viral´s stories are awful. Dante The Great is a story about a weak magician whose life changes after he finds an old cloak and he suddenly turns into the world´s greatest magician. But all that power comes with a price...
It has two decent scenes but it´s all very predictable and there´s nothing remarkable about it, the worst part is that it all goes downhill from here.
Nacho Vigalondo´s (Timecrimes, Open Windows) Parallel Worlds is a story about a man who builds a parallel world travelling machine on his basement only to find out that a version of him of another world did the same and they decided to visit each others worlds for 15 min. At first glance, everything seems to be the same but soon there will be some shocking differences to both men. This one had some potential at first and it made some interesting choices with the designs of the "things" but it never goes anywhere with it.
The 3rd story commits a cardinal sin, it is extremely boring. 3 skateboards and a cameraman go to Tijuana to film some skating scenes but they end up on a scene straight out of hell. I was shocked to find out that this comes from Justin Benson and Aaron Scott Moorhead, the men behind a movie called Spring which seems really nice and a tad bit original.
There´s no redeeming feature about this short, the only thing amazing about this is how they made fighting skeletons look super boring. It just fizzles out in the end without a proper closing.
The "wrap around" story tries to make a point about viral videos, how people do everything for internet fame, how all this garbage is affecting people.
The best thing I can say about it is that at least it wasn´t boring.
In the end, this is definitely the lowest point of the V/H/S franchise and it kind makes me glad they are stopping with it, at least for a while.
Avoid at all costs.
Always wanted to see Drag Me To Hell and Into The Woods or whatever it was called. I'll try to see them this month.
By rossonero Go To PostYes indeed I have and it was great. Not scary at all but hilarious. The dive into the grinder cracks me up every time.

True story: my older sisters were taking care of my sister and I when I was like 11 and my parents were out. After preparing us a spaghetti dinner my more daredevil sister put in a videotape of a movie she wanted to watch. I asked her what it was about and I remember her smiling and saying "you'll see". Now I had watched some horror movies before at a young age and alot of graphic anime since my yonger sis was like "eh he's mature enough". So there I sat at the age of 11, about to watch the uncut version of The Thing...
and eating spaghetti...
..
To this day I curse my sister and have threatened her bodily harm. The movie is probably why I found the manga Parasyte (airing on "Toonami" tomorrow) so horrifying.
It's good that I went in without knowing who made it beforehand I guess
If you fancy some cheesy 80's John Carpenter vibe, you could do worse than The Prince of Darkness.
I want to see Teeth
Edit: Jacobs Ladder is a great semi horror kinda flick.
By Laboured Go To PostI know I gets tonnes of shit (undeserved in my opinion) but I still think Blair Witch Project is good effective horror.Blair Witch deserves a ton of respect for some great things it did. Not only did they realized that not seeing something sometimes is more scary than anything you can put on screen but it also catapulted the found footage genre to the mainstream, something The Last Broadcast tried to do a year early but without much success.
Blair Witch was also one of the first big cases of viral marketing in movies. They created fake websites about the Blair Witch legend, there were threads on forums and newsgroups about the legend and even remember watching a TV documentary about the 3 missing students on the night before the movie premiered.
By Slizz Go To PostIs this Eli Roth movie a kind of remake of Cannibal Holocaust? That was a fucked up movie. Not really a remake but it's heavily influenced by cannibal exploitation movies like Cannibal Holocaust and Cannibal Ferox.
Roth claims that they actually went deep into the jungle to film this and they found this tribe who had never seen a TV or watched a movie. So they taught them the concept of a movie, hooked up a TV to a generator and played Cannibal Holocaust to the tribe. The tribe thought that it was the funniest thing that they ever seen and agreed to act in the movie.
He is labeled as godfather of Zombie movies and really made them popular, despite the huge love for Night of the Living Dead his first movie, I think Dawn is by far the better movie.
There isn't one point where the movie really is a prime example through their various departments (actors, sound, makeup, cinematography and others).
The package as whole just works so well together, they had a good cast, great sets and a storyline that was rather new for an horror movie, especially a zombie movie.
It might not have aged so well, as the original makeup on the zombies wasn't that good.
If you compare it with the stuff that Tom Savini pulled off in the the next installment in the series, it's a night and day difference.
I'm not the biggest fan of the second though, so I'll rather take my grey zombies :P
There is also a pretty popular remake from 2004, done by Zack Snyder.
The essence of the movie is the same, a group hides together in a supermarket while a zombie apocalypse goes on.
That's about it.
Zombies have evolved into running zombies, there are far more characters that have a totally different backround and the original messages from 1978 aren't really part of the Remake.
Apart from Snyder, there were 3 other zombie movies by George A. Romero between 2005 and 2009, but I can't really recommend them.
They were just mediocore to REALLY bad, no idea what happend, but he lost his mojo.
Anyway, if you're a fan of zombie flicks and can endure older stuff, feel free to watch it.
Oh and be aware that there are quite a few different cuts, so be sure to watch the longest.
By LFMartins86 Go To PostYou forgot to mention that Night Of The Living Dead had a very competent remake in 1990, directed by Tom Savini.Indeed.
Apart from the Dawn of the Dead remake, it was the only remake from his zombie movies that was actually quite good.
There are so many shitty adaptions sadly, despite the really great source material.
