Let’s have a separate thread for our yearly league so we can talk about FPL freely without bothering those people who are uninterested.
For those uninitiated, the official Premier League Fantasy is at fantasy.premierleague.com
A ton of good info is available at fantasyfootballscout.co.uk, some stuff is behind a paywall, which is understandable given the quality of research and tools they put in. For cheapos like myself, it’s still got good free articles to help you make your team.
We have a private classic league, admined by n8. I’ll update the thread when I get the league invite code.
Lots of people start out and few people care about it toward the end of the season, but maybe with a separate thread to discuss it, we can keep interest going a little longer.
I’ll kick off the discussion by asking: who here is going for Salah at 13.0m? He’s tremendously expensive this season after being top point scorer last time, and a lot of people have reservations about whether he can follow up last season’s explosive numbers.
My feeling is that it’s too scary not to have him. If he has a good first few weeks and his price raises its going to be nearly impossible finding a way to fit him into a lineup. Seems the safe option to start the season with Salah and then trade him out if he’s not able to match his value with numbers.

I'd wait a a few weeks before jumping in to be honest, unless he has an amazing preseason off course. (Salah)
Sané, Hazard (if he stays) & Milovojevic will be my first midfielders.
I was thinking about Mahrez but I don't know if he'll be used as Bernardo or not.

I'm starting with Salah. As you said, it's easier to remove him than to bring him in (at least without using an early wildcard). Think he's already at 50% ownership, too.
As for some diamonds in the rough, I've been reading good things about Jota(6.5m, Mid, Wolves), Douglas(5.0m, DF, Wolves), Cairney(5.0m, Mid, Fulham).
Jota apparently plays mostly as a forward for Wolves, Douglas is a very offensive fullback with a mean cross and Cairney takes set pieces for Fulham, could be another Milivojevic(Pen).
I'm also thinking of starting with Martial and Lamela due to WC cannibalising both United and Spurs squad, so they should be starters for at least the first two matches. Might be tricky removing them later without sacrificing some points.
If Hazard stays, he should be an essential after the first two weeks, he'll wreak havoc in Sarri's system. Also, 10.5m for Sanchez is ridiculous, no way he is worth that much.

I'm not touching any midfielder from City. Pep's crazy wheel of rotation only got bigger. I'd only look into getting Sterling but 11.0 is too much for him.

im doin this for now, will probably change a lot by the time season starts
gotta think of how to fit in kdb, problem is a lot of expensive players gonna be knackered for start of season

The World Cup is gonna make a lot of players from England, Belgium and France questionable as first week picks. I’m gonna go with Aguero I think. Should be starting for City, one would assume
By FermentedFungi Go To PostSo can I just create a team now and join later?Yes
General thoughts on the selection: the primary aspect I consider when picking players is their value; in order to do well in fantasy football your 100m of players needs to produce points equivalent to 110m worth of players. If you're not playing head to head or draft, you don't need to worry about what other people are picking, only that your predictions for points outperform the value assigned by the fpl guys. As such, much of the game revolves not around absolute good performance but players & clubs that do better than they did last year.
The first and easiest point target to adjust for is playing time. A player that plays every game 90 minutes gets 76 points, after all, and not even to mention that you won't score points if you're not on the pitch, so I try and avoid players whose squad status is unclear or who might be expected to be rotated regularly, as most do. You can do well here by finding players that experienced unusual injuries in the previous season, since if they play more regularly this year they are bound to do better. I don't think any of my selections missed much time last season, but I was tempted by Clyne for this reason.
For goalkeepers and defenders, points don't really depend on individual performance but team performance. Playing regularly and keeping clean sheets will make up 90% of the points they score, and the remaining 10% with assists/goals are so random you can't really predict for anyone. Thus, I'm looking for teams that you can expect to keep more clean sheets than last year, that will do well defensively. Crystal Palace and Arsenal are two teams that underperformed their xGA figures, Palace massively so, while Newcastle heavily improved in the second half of the season after Dubravka arrived, so if they maintain that form they will undoubtedly do better in defensive numbers.
Midfielders and Strikers are much more about goals and assists, so I'm looking for players that a)were unlucky with xG/xA (Benteke was crazy unlucky, Richarlison also), b) new signings that might be undervalued, c) young players that are likely to continue improving. I generally try and stay away from very expensive players because there is nowhere to but down really, unless they have supreme consistency like Kane.
tl;dr: if there's one recommendation, Palace statistically underperformed by a large amount and are a good bet to have a big upswing.
Have you looked at Newcastle's opening fixtures though? In their first 5 games, they play Spurs, Chelsea, City & Arsenal.
Here's what I have so far
Debating whether to keep two mid-priced forwards or go all in on one premium. Aguero is subject to Pep's wheel of rotation and Aubameyang has two tough games at the start. Kane is a no go until after august has passed.

This is what I'm running so far. Will probably change out Fabianski. Have 4m in the bank too.
Jesal pls re-activate the league
By ATTICUS H Go To Postis this reactivated?
Jesal said he did it a couple of hours ago, but it isn't showing for me on the renew page...

Sane not starting first week really sucks dingus, not just because I wanted those points but because it throws doubt on whether or not he'll be a constant. I thought for sure with his long break, he'd be playing.
Alisson received a bonus point, which is a bit of an eyebrow raiser.
Who is "Kante fit my Willian"? Dude smashed it with 98 points, even with Wan Bissaka on the bench. Would have came in at 110 with him.

Took Richarlison out of my team last minute, left Wan Bissaka and Neves on the bench. Disaster.
Still did slightly above average so not all bad. Already overhauled the team.

Yeah I looked at your team. You would have been in the very top percentile if you used bench boost or just had those players in to start
I have Sané from City’s midfield. Though it’s looking like I should have Bilva instead... he was great in the Comm Shield and City’s opening match.
Got the same problem. Swapped Sanchez for Hazard. Going to need to trade in Odoi since it seems like Sarri can't be arsed.
Bilva and Alli in. Gone for the Spurs exposure instead of doubling up on Liverpool or City. Sterling especially too expensive I think
Yeah been having the same concerns as you guys, really don't know if sane is gunna start but didn't want tinker too much as already subbed out two players.
Vardy should get that assist Right stat right?

Mkhitaryan showed up against Chelsea big. Glad I kept him in after that shitfest against City. 7.0 is a great price for him.
Sigh, I really didn’t want to bring in Alonso but I feel compelled to. He’s a terrible defender but he always seems to be in the goals and assists.
I was planning to use Robertson as my only expensive defender this season. But it looks like there are a lot of good attacking options for under 10m, so having two expensive defenders may work out.

Yeah I actually think fullbacks are now the key to winning this thing and tempted to change my stratagey
Went with Lukaku over Aguero so he better fucking step up later. Glad I have Mendy in since the start.
By Oddinho Go To PostNo Sane again. FUCK you Pep
Same situation here. No Walker has shafted me too.
