Early this morning my sister's boyfriend took his own life. I was in the house when my sister got the news and I've never heard a person in such pain. She was screaming like every bone in her body was breaking
He kept it quiet but he was depressed and had a gambling problem. He only spoke about it to my sister and she only told her best friend. They were trying to help him as best they could. All of this was news to me. I got on well with him and we went out for a few drinks last Saturday. He seemed fine.
I know it's hard to ask a friend if they're feeling ok when on the surface everything points to the fact they are. But please make the effort. You just never know.
Also if anyone isn't feeling ok please reach out. There are people who will absolutely help and listen. If anyone here is like that please PM me here or on twitter
Horrible mate. Gambling addictions and debts are an increasingly common occurrence for suicide. There is unfortunately fuck all from the government in terms of a support network for problem gamblers. Addiction is tough for people to talk about and with gambling there is often very few physical triggers for people to see so they can help. I hope your sister can find some peace that the system has failed him and nothing she could do would help.
