A passenger died and seven others were injured after the engine of a Southwest Airlines jet blew open in mid-air — sending debris into the plane's body and causing a window to burst.
Passengers described hearing the Boeing 737-700's left engine explode about 20 minutes after takeoff from New York's LaGuardia Airport Tuesday morning. The plane violently depressurized when the window broke open.
The pressure change apparently pulled a female passenger partially out of the jet, according to a family member of another passenger.

i was in a plane that had all but 1 engine fail over the Mediterranean. Also an old guy died of a heart attack on lift-off. Really fun flight.
I think being ripped out of a jet at 30K feet, only to fall to my death by myself, is probably a bigger fear of mine than just going down with the whole thing and everyone else inside. Which is kinda selfish, but misery loves company.

it's alright mate planes are statistically safer than cars, but you're guaranteed to die if something does go wrong, so it balances out.
One of my biggest fears is falling out of a window like that. I hate even seeing it in films.
Something truly major has to happen for you to be guaranteed to die.
If you are over land then you can have all enjines stop working and still most likely make it to safety.
For me the amazing thing is when enjines explode, but don’t completely rip the wing off.
