I'm a big fan of college sports (especially football) but I feel some degree of guilt contributing to the popularity of such an exploitative enterprise.

The concept of collegiate athletics clubs isn't that weird to me. Universities in tons of countries have athletics.

What's different about the US is the mass commercialization of the product and the huge amount of money generated. This has the NCAA in a tough spot, because they have to simultaneously argue that the athletes are fairly compensated while raking in oodles of money off an enterprise with the sweat and work of "student athletes" as the core product.

I dream of a day when college basketball players strike through the month of March. The NCAA would cave so damn quickly and it would be hilarious.
