Looks like they are on course to be relegated.Worth bearing in mind that their underlying numbers are a whole lot better than the likes of Huddersfield, Swansea and even West Ham. In the relegation battles just 2 good results can completely turn around a losing fight, so I still wouldn't bet against Southampton at this point despite their low points total.
That being said, what they did wrong was decide to appease the short term emotions of their fanbase instead of focusing on building the team for the long term, and pissed away the chance to rebuild in the summer.
If Southampton had sold us VVD in the summer, we'd be solidly second and they'd be reasonably safe from the drop
