I am sorry, but being a grown man and into figure skating is a huge red flag. Just 13 y.o girls are actually 1000 year old dragon levels weird.
Nathan Chen, lads! Excellent performance!
The only one out there that deserves anything. The rest should be slid into the center of the rink and euthanized.

But that's not what this is about.
That it's a mod spouting such implicit heteronormativity and sexism isn't exactly flattering for Slaent, have to be honest.

By Shanks D Zoro Go To PostFirst time in a month I have seen you mention guys.I've mentioned them a few times, but following the Olympics they simply haven't been as compelling. They performed poorly at the junior world championships, and the top two senior men didn't even compete at the world championships.
I might be wrong.
And if we really want to make this about the age of female skaters, I've mentioned precisely two under the age of 18 in the past month: one a 15-year-old record-breaking Olympic champion and the other a 13-year-old who accomplished something no other woman in history has ever done. If similarly aged male footballers did something comparable, every poster in this thread wouldn't shut the fuck about them.

I am always gonna be concerned in any sport that over sexualises the participents. Especially a sport that has participants that as young as those girls are.
I had to mention in a meeting recently not to have students on laps. Sure the guy might have had a male student on his lap, but when the overwhelming majority are girls it is a cause for concern.

It's extremely not challenging though. Do not expect ninja gaiden. Also it still does have a lot of the jrpg tropes that frustrates people... But it's very cummy i would say.
By Shanks D Zoro Go To PostI am always gonna be concerned in any sport that over sexualises the participents. Especially a sport that has participants that as young as those girls are.I understand those concerns. I do a lot of education work with children in my current position, so I'm also well aware of how to behave and how not to behave around them - and also how those behaviors are perceived and how those perceptions are internalized, no matter how innocent something may be.
I had to mention in a meeting recently not to have students on laps. Sure the guy might have had a male student on his lap, but when the overwhelming majority are girls it is a cause for concern.
I also don't think that figure skating is inherently sexualizing, per se. In fact, Odd and I had a decently lengthy discussion about it not too long ago. So as not to just repeat myself, I'll quote the conversation in full for those who may be interested.
I will note, though, that I think it's a complex subject, and just following the sport shouldn't be a 'red flag' as you put it. Clothe them in something else entirely, like Medvedeva as mentioned below, and the performances are just as enchanting.
By flinbad the flailer Go To Post
I've been Auto'ed by accident.
True talk: when the gold medal-winner, Zagitova, a 15-year-old, did some bizarre exhibition performance in a striped catsuit with large transparent 'cutouts' (for lack of a better term), it was a genuinely uncomfortable experience. For the most part, I don't think ice skating sexualizes the performers, but that particular routine was gross and exploitative.
Meanwhile, Medvedeva was broodily skating around in an all-black leather-and-hoody ensemble.
By Oddinho Go To PostI think ice skating does sexualize the performers, not explicitly so, but it’s the only Olympic sport where costume design factors into the performance, and most of the top performers are young girls. Everything else is a matter of function, except for gymnastics, the other sport that primarily involves teenage girls.
We don’t really know how much of it is up to the performer and how much is up to the coach. It may be uncomfortable for an adult viewer but for her, it may be what she wants to do. So still having not seen it, I’m reluctant to label it gross and exploitive. As a high school teacher, I’m pretty aware that for better or worse these kids are mostly in charge of what they do and how they style themselves.
By flinbad the flailer Go To PostHonestly, at the time, I said that as a 15-year-old she probably does want the entire world to think she's sexy. When I was 15, I certainly felt the same way. But how a professional fashion designer put her in that, and how a professional choreographer put the moves to it, and how her coaches and her parents let her go out and do it is what made it feel wrong to me.
For the costumes in general, I don't think they're intentionally 'sexual', per se. I think they're, for the most part, designed to evoke the ballet, society events, high fashion, etc, without being restrictive to someone performing difficult movements on fucking ice skates. Sure, they could have them dressed up more like the men (in fact, some of the female skaters will go out there in full leggings, etc), but they're often trying to pair the outfit with the music to create the overall performance.
One of the keys for me on whether it is being intentionally sexual or not is in how it is choreographed. Is the skater 'flirting' with the judges/audience? Is she performing movements that evoke sexual poses or positions? Some of them certainly do that. But most don't. Most are just ladies in short sequined dresses doing athletic maneuvers most people couldn't dream of accomplishing.
By Oddinho Go To PostIm definitely in agreement with you Flab, I don’t think it’s intentionally sexual. That’s not a key tenet of the sport, but neither of us is naïve enough to believe that it’s divorced entirely from the performances. Nor should it be, so long as it doesn’t dominate and cheapen the performance. Figure skating is a kind of interpretive dance, sexuality can and should be a part of that.
A 15-year-old however doing sexy poses, “come here” gestures and flirting with the audience is going to make for a very uncomfortable stadium of thousands of people (but a few of them very, very happy).
Just my thoughts anyway, I don’t keep up or watch it aside from Yuzuru because he’s an icon here.
By flinbad the flailer Go To PostI don't think sexuality is entirely divorced from the performances by the mere fact that people on the other side of the audience - which is to say, not just the skaters and their coaches, but also all of the administrative officials who perpetuate a certain status quo in the sport - must surely be aware of how modern audiences perceive the outfits and styles they're performing in. Ice skating exists within a global cultural milieu in which less clothing is often associated with sexuality, deservedly or not. By agreeing to go out there and perform in short sequined dresses, they're accepting in some way the possibility or even likelihood that what they're wearing could be perceived as sexual or, depending on the viewer, sexy.
I don't know that that makes it sexual, however. Why is a girl in an ice skating costume usually perceived as more sexual than, say, a male swimmer in a tiny speedo? And must she, to escape the sexualizing (male) gaze, accommodate herself to wearing something entirely different? I don't believe so. I think these girls and women can wear something that's fitting of the history of the sport (which may, admittedly, be both sexist and sexualizing - but that's a longer, more entangled discussion) without being reduced to sex objects.
Can ice skating be sexual? Absolutely. They can use that to their advantage (not that I'm sure it'd work on a modern panel of judges, but they can try if they want) or to stylize their routines or just to express themselves according to their own self-conceptions. But I don't think it's sexual by default.
By inky Go To PostNi no kuni is the only anime talk I'll allow. Is it out on Steam yet?
Yes and it looks sensational in 4k.
I remember that conversation.
There is still a lot of concern for me. You are basically saying that those girls are accepting that they are whoring themselves out. They know what they are getting into when they are wearing those outfits.
I am not saying you are into them or anything, but I will always go on the side of caution in such situations.

First, let's dispense with this exaggeration and shaming wherein wearing a skating costume becomes equivalent to selling yourself for sex. They're not remotely similar. Figure skating isn't sex trafficking, and wearing small dresses isn't getting your orifices rammed by strangers.
Second, they can acknowledge how they may appear publicly without agreeing with those views. Anyone can. You yourself might recognize that people might think you look like a pretentious fop with your €800 umbrella and ostentatious calf-leather shoes, but that doesn't mean you agree with those assessments or necessarily want people to have those opinions of you.
Third, we should have some consideration of who the audience is. I think it'll surprise no one that the figure skating viewership is overwhelming women and that, amongst the men, gay guys are disproportionately represented. The number of straight males who follow the sport is small; even the number who have any real awareness of it is small. The idea that these ladies are dressing up just for that tiny number of guys is, frankly, pretty absurd.
But that's almost all beside the point, because what I honestly think is that the modern heterosexual man himself sexualizes so many things, but that doesn't mean every woman should wear a burlap sack to keep men's hormones under control.
By NinjaFridge Go To PostWe can't forget the time flabber told Francis to watch figure skating when the latter said he couldn't find adequate porn.Arguably the most misinterpreted thing I've ever written - and understandably so. I was responding to the fact that he wanted to cheer himself up, but, alas, the juxtaposition with porn just set myself up for failure.
Besides, who the fuck can find porn cheerful? Other than Wooden.
At the end of the day you acknowledged that young girls who wear those outfits are accepting that that they are going to be sexualised. It comes across to me anyway the same as those who defend rape as women who wear certain outfits and behave in certain ways are asking for it to happen.
I will always put my concerns for children over the feelings of grown ups on the internet who make jokes about jerking off to a sport that help sexualises young girls.

His support of something so clearly disgusting and abusive is sickening. The way it is designed to take advantage of the innocent and somehow make itself look legitimate is a new level of debauchery that we would all do right to condem. I will say it now because I feel everyone has been too quiet for too long on the subject: Serie A is a disgrace.

It comes across to me anyway the same as those who defend rape as women who wear certain outfits and behave in certain ways are asking for it to happen.I didn't "acknowledge" that. What I said exactly was, "By agreeing to go out there and perform in short sequined dresses, they're accepting in some way the possibility or even likelihood that what they're wearing could be perceived as sexual or, depending on the viewer, sexy," but that in no way means that they want to be sexualized or that they're forced to be sexualized. The blame is still 100% on the male viewers who sexualize them when they're not overtly and intentionally sexualizing themselves (something that I blankly stated does happen with some skaters in some routines - certainly not all or even most).
I will always put my concerns for children over the feelings of grown ups on the internet who make jokes about jerking off to a sport that help sexualises young girls.
Your logic - especially trying to link it to victim blaming - is preposterous. You're the one who is actually blaming these women for being perceived as sexual objects because they refuse to dress and perform within certain hypothetical boundaries of non-arousal determined by the sexual desires of men.
