By Oddinho Go To PostI think ice skating does sexualize the performers, not explicitly so, but it’s the only Olympic sport where costume design factors into the performance, and most of the top performers are young girls. Everything else is a matter of function, except for gymnastics, the other sport that primarily involves teenage girls.Honestly, at the time, I said that as a 15-year-old she probably does want the entire world to think she's sexy. When I was 15, I certainly felt the same way. But how a professional fashion designer put her in that, and how a professional choreographer put the moves to it, and how her coaches and her parents let her go out and do it is what made it feel wrong to me.
We don’t really know how much of it is up to the performer and how much is up to the coach. It may be uncomfortable for an adult viewer but for her, it may be what she wants to do. So still having not seen it, I’m reluctant to label it gross and exploitive. As a high school teacher, I’m pretty aware that for better or worse these kids are mostly in charge of what they do and how they style themselves.
For the costumes in general, I don't think they're intentionally 'sexual', per se. I think they're, for the most part, designed to evoke the ballet, society events, high fashion, etc, without being restrictive to someone performing difficult movements on fucking ice skates. Sure, they could have them dressed up more like the men (in fact, some of the female skaters will go out there in full leggings, etc), but they're often trying to pair the outfit with the music to create the overall performance.
One of the keys for me on whether it is being intentionally sexual or not is in how it is choreographed. Is the skater 'flirting' with the judges/audience? Is she performing movements that evoke sexual poses or positions? Some of them certainly do that. But most don't. Most are just ladies in short sequined dresses doing athletic maneuvers most people couldn't dream of accomplishing.

True talk: when the gold medal-winner, Zagitova, a 15-year-old, did some bizarre exhibition performance in a striped catsuit with large transparent 'cutouts' (for lack of a better term), it was a genuinely uncomfortable experience. For the most part, I don't think ice skating sexualizes the performers, but that particular routine was gross and exploitative.
Meanwhile, Medvedeva was broodily skating around in an all-black leather-and-hoody ensemble.
Was incredible
Im definitely in agreement with you Flab, I don’t think it’s intentionally sexual. That’s not a key tenet of the sport, but neither of us is naïve enough to believe that it’s divorced entirely from the performances. Nor should it be, so long as it doesn’t dominate and cheapen the performance. Figure skating is a kind of interpretive dance, sexuality can and should be a part of that.
A 15-year-old however doing sexy poses, “come here” gestures and flirting with the audience is going to make for a very uncomfortable stadium of thousands of people (but a few of them very, very happy).
Just my thoughts anyway, I don’t keep up or watch it aside from Yuzuru because he’s an icon here.

By Francis Go To PostJosé isn't going anywhere, lads - nor should he. Fed up with this constant rotation of managers. Stick by him for once.I disagree. My bar for Mourinho is really low. We signed Mourinho to correct the ship. We forgave the style of play because we needed the payoff, which was trophies and getting us to compete at the highest level.
Next season will be the perfect time to break the "curse".
Let him run down his current deal and then (depending on how he does) move on. It's not like he's Moyes or LVG.
I have patience for a Mou led team that actually looks like it can win things. However, the football in attack is so shit that I don't believe we're going to get that payoff from hiring Mourinho. So why persist with a manager that won't bring you silverware at the cost of entertainment? He feels like a transitional manager, just a better one than LVG and Moyes. He made some good signings which will benefit the next manager. He improved us so we don't need the next manager to start from outside the top 4.
Normally I’m in favor of teams sticking it out with their managers and letting them work, but Mourinho is poison
All that talk earlier about top athletes and so on and not 1 mention of Ronaldo. The same Ronaldo going toe to toe and surprising everyone year over year at age 33 with 5 Ballon d'Ors and who the fuck knows how many records in how many fucking competitions in how many fucking tournaments winning god knows how many awards.

Figure skating is a kind of interpretive dance, sexuality can and should be a part of that.I don't think sexuality is entirely divorced from the performances by the mere fact that people on the other side of the audience - which is to say, not just the skaters and their coaches, but also all of the administrative officials who perpetuate a certain status quo in the sport - must surely be aware of how modern audiences perceive the outfits and styles they're performing in. Ice skating exists within a global cultural milieu in which less clothing is often associated with sexuality, deservedly or not. By agreeing to go out there and perform in short sequined dresses, they're accepting in some way the possibility or even likelihood that what they're wearing could be perceived as sexual or, depending on the viewer, sexy.

I don't know that that makes it sexual, however. Why is a girl in an ice skating costume usually perceived as more sexual than, say, a male swimmer in a tiny speedo? And must she, to escape the sexualizing (male) gaze, accommodate herself to wearing something entirely different? I don't believe so. I think these girls and women can wear something that's fitting of the history of the sport (which may, admittedly, be both sexist and sexualizing - but that's a longer, more entangled discussion) without being reduced to sex objects.
Can ice skating be sexual? Absolutely. They can use that to their advantage (not that I'm sure it'd work on a modern panel of judges, but they can try if they want) or to stylize their routines or just to express themselves according to their own self-conceptions. But I don't think it's sexual by default.

A.) the shirts are absurdly tight and frankly I can't imagine I'll buy any of them in turn, and b.) it's Puma. Who cares about Puma? Nike is the name brand in sports.. on a global scale, you definitely want to be associated with them ahead of any competitor. Puma's global revenue was about 1/10th of Nike last year. They are a nothing company in comparison – even Adidas only do about half the revenue of Nike. You'd have to think that Nike would be willing to come close to matching the offer, but even if they came in slightly lower, I'd still stick with them.
I wouldn't lock myself in to any deals until the end of the season as well as you can surely negotiate with more strength if you win the Champions League.
Would much rather we go back to Umbro. Awesome material and most of their kit designs were gorgeous, except for our title-winning one, but that’s okay.
It’s a big monetary boost that and makes us more financially self-sustainable.

In my estimation he can win another five Baloons and the only people who would use that statistic in future would be his fans. He is an excellent goal scorer, but Messi has been superior from a footballing perspective ever since he broke into the first team. Ronaldo is a machine, Messi is a god on the pitch. Unrivalled in overall ability by anybody to lace up their boots, ever.
I do not want to rattle off numbers, opinions on which aspect one shines over the other, all I am going to say is that when you sit down and watch them both side by side with the understanding of how difficult it is, to do the things they do on the pitch, you can only logically come away with one conclusion as to who is superior.

It wasn't a him v him debate, who cares which one is better, that's such a boring topic and I cringe at people arguing about it. My point is about not recognizing godly athletes if we're to talk about the best bunch in sports.
Ronaldo is one of the best athletes in the history of sports, period.
Messi certainly has qualities that Ronaldo doesn't but unlike many here I can actually say I enjoy watching, appreciating and recognizing both equally for their unique traits, whereas so many just put up a bias wall and refuse to recognize other greats but Messi. It's as if it were a high school popularity contest lol, enjoy them while they last, in 5 years they're both gone.
