By Zabojnik Go To PostUEFA should make a rule where a club that wins 10 national titles in a row gets retroactively awarded a win in one of the CL finals they lost. You just went and jinxed it. Absolute mad man.
I'm sorry, Penny. We were the better team and you know it.
By Eternity Go To PostManchester United choked the space that Liverpool thrive in. Have to give Mou props for the way he out tacticked Klopp, he indeed does a have a knack for a masterclass on occasion and when his team pull it off its quite a sight. Liverpool did themselves no favour with some extremely lax defending.Felt more relieved than happy. The last 10 minutes was so stressful.
Congratulations to Manchester United fans on this forum.
I wouldn't say it was outtacticing, because the match was far too close for that. On another day Van dijk heads in a corner or Radford shoots poorly and the result is reversed. In expg terms both sides were about the same, and things just went United's way on the day.
I think that’s ignoring how well Salah was shut down though, or how little you found yourselves 2 on 2/3 on 3 in a counterattacking situation. It wasn’t a masterclass but I think we certainly handled your game more so than the opposite.
I don't understand since when has expg stat has become relevant. Mous tactics were absolutely on point Liverpool had no clear cut chance they were just restricted to hopeful long shots and set pieces which haven't been their forte.

United had a few chances of decent quality and Liverpool had a lot of chances of poor quality, to end up even in terms of expg.
Leaving the out-tacticked debate aside, I thought the players played Mou's tactics perfectly.
In the first half Rashford finally showed up after a few months of having a pretty bad form, while McTominay and Smalling rose to the occasion after a shit time at Crystal Palace.
In the second United was asked to defend high up the pitch and Sanchez, who was largely ineffective in the first was crucial for that. We wouldn't have won the game without him.
Proud of the players who played their ass off. Now if only they'll keep at it.

I noticed too there were no passengers in the game, perhaps an argument could be made for Sanchez who I thought looked lost at times, but the absence of Pogba made us defensively much more rigid and cohesive, there were no gaps in the midfield for Liverpool to press through. It does ask some major questions going forward, it is entirely possible that we would be a better "Team" without Pogba unless he is willing to enhance his defensive game, to which hes shown little willingness to. I have no doubt he is the best player we could put in the outfield, but he simply does not work in the sytle we play yesterday, and will continue to play in big games. Martial is similar.

In expg terms both sides were about the same, and things just went United's way on the day.I'm not sure I agree. Yes, both sides had similar xG, but, crucially, both are on the low side as well. A low xG stat makes sense for United, since after the early goals(which are obviously to some degree fortuitous) there was little impetus for them to push forward and take risks. It doesn't necessarily reflect negatively on their performance, while an expg of 0.75-85ish(a lot of which came in small increments from relatively harmless shots from outside the box with plenty of defenders around) reflects poorly on a team that is chasing the game from the 14th minute on.
I was shitting myself at the time, but looking back, Liverpool rarely threatened really. There wasn't a shot on target in the second half at all was there? From a quick glance through Liverpool's stats for the season, yesterday was their second or third lowest xG all season, and that in a game where they had 68% possession. Did that come from United being able to lie in a low block almost all game? Or was it a result of a tactical nullification of Liverpool's offensive strengths? It's somewhat difficult to say, but when I look at how effectively players like Salah were defanged by United players who are typically not associated with great defensive nous, it seems evident that there was something more at play tactically than simply lying back in a low block.
I think its important to note Mourinhos tactics look a hell of alot better if we get the first goal or score early and have something to pin it on, there have been times this season we have done this and not scored out chances, such as Liverpool away where Lukaku missed our big one and it just looks like a big ball of shit, defensively fine sure but no attacking threat whatsoever after a certain point. It really does rely heavily on our one or two chances being absolutely clinical, which is a dice roll with us.

Really being undone by two goal kicks is inexcusable
Whatever our plan was for dealing with them, it was dogshit. Lovren making a cunt of himself as per, space around Lukaku completely vacated, nobody staying close to the runners.
We were always going to struggle after going a goal down, Mourinho is the best in the business at getting his teams to allow no space in the box, and we have little threat outside it

i'm watching season 3 of love.
now... the other couple is already insufferable, but mike mitchell especially has got to be the most insufferable man i've ever witnessed. on television or in real life.
i hate everything this man says and does whenever he's in a scene.
please tell me he dies in the first episode of the season.

We had a big chance in both and we blew it both times. As a consequence, it ended up being labeled the most rancid football we've played. But that's Mou. He's happy with those low chance, away 0-0s.
I didn't catch the first half yesterday, but from the highlights it seems at least we showed some energy beyond the long ball goals. Hopefully they can repeat against Sevilla.

But that's Mou.First half we were easily the best team and could have had 4 goals, the last 7 or 8 minutes of the half though we retreated to protect it going into HT and that followed suit after half time where, honestly, we were solely concerned with protecting 2-0. I think the opening 38 or so mins we were very very good and no-one could argue about our style of play, not only did it work but it produced good football, there was no bus parking at all.

Yeah United played some good attacking football. Even in the 2nd half we didn't defend low with our players keeping it as high as they could up the pitch.
Can't say enough how crucial Sanchez was for the win. He's having a hard time trying to get used to United's tactics but he just absolutely bossed it in the 2nd half, after being our worst player on the pitch.

It really won't matter how effective or efficient United's attacking football was - the narrative that has taken hold is that Liverpool are the best attacking side in the galaxy - a narrative enforced by Souness and his former Liverpool pundits. Therefore, it wasn't that Young marked Salah out of the game, its that Salah was having an off day.

Interesting insight. Makes sense.
I think you're a better team without Pog. A little more cohesive. In terms of effect on the team, Sanchez looks like one of the worst buys of the window so far.
Sanchez did a good job pressing from the front tbf. Not exactly what we bought him for, but he had a tangible impact on our game.
I don't think Sanchez was all that good... Yes he was harrying and pressing but equally he lost the ball a criminal amount of times which also put us in a difficult position on a few occasions. Really expected a lot from him and so far he has delivered nothing. He needs to be a lot more careful at losing the ball. We cannot afford our attacks dying so often because of 1 player.
Sanchez needs time to settle in the team I feel. You can see glimpses of what it might look like if the teams gets on the same wavelength. I expect him to be much better next season, especially with no WC for him.
As for the game; Mourinho went with a tactic that exploits Liverpool's weakness and bypasses their strengths. This also had the double effect of minimizing our weakness and playing to our strength. He went with long balls to bypass their attack and mid, get the ball up to Lukkaku and have Rashford, Mata, and Sanchez play off him. This resulted in 2 goals. Liverpool didn't have any clear chance on goal.
I don't enjoy a lot of our football most times but yesterday was a perfect showing of what Mourinho is about.

Would like to see Willock come on at some point today, he's looked pretty solid in most of the games he's played this year.
Marchisio back in the starting XI is good news, as is that attacking trio, Sturaro getting picked over the boy Bentancur ... not so much.
