e: he can't actually play for the Celtics for another day or two because he doesn't clear waivers until tomorrow, iirc
Perfect team to go to, coach preaches defense and Monroe won't get exposed since he'll only play backup minutes (20 a night at most?). Plus they have young defenders who can fly around and hide his lack of lateral movement on PnR.
If there isn't anyone who thinks Celtics can't beat the Cavs in less than 7 at this point I dunno what to say anymore.

By rodeoclown Go To PostUntil Boston or Toronto actually take out Cleveland, I won't believe it can happen.Toronto has new energetic defenders with size and length (Siakam/Anuboy/Poetl) that could be a tipping point to go with revitalized DeRozan and vets Ibaka and Big Val and can work down low on the Cavs. The thing is ... Playoffs Lowry + have they been so traumatized by repeatedly getting trounced that they can't get over the hump?
Celtics don't seem to fear the Cavs at all and everyone on that team digs in... plus the Isaiah for Kyrie swap is working out huge for the Celts and now you're adding another defensive-minded big who is a legit low post presence? Now I'm fully aware Cavs will improve, but to what extent? The TT/Love/James/JR/Isaiah Thomas Cavs have to score 120 points to win games, and that lineup isn't going to improve much on D.
Celtics have to fight SHOOK in the playoffs
Jaylen x Tatum x even the mighty Rozier might get shook
Celtics vs Cavs second round might be like 2010 🤔

I'm old enough to remember (on other internets) where one user was repeatedly insistent that Greg Monroe could be the centerpiece of a Kyrie trade between Cleveland and Milwaukee. Good times had by all.

By reilo Go To PostMonroe, defensive-minded bigHe gets exposed constantly when he has to move a la Roy Hibbert, but not as badly. That can be covered somewhat if you have athletics 3s and 4s -- which is what the Celtics have. He also suffered from "checked out, getting mine" disease (see Suns Bledsoe, Eric), which I think Brad Stevens can break him out of. Yeah, the guy when motivated can be a nice bench piece.
lol
EDIT: At some point, you have to learn to be NOT SHOOK. I've seen players evolve to be NOT SHOOK and it's beautiful to watch... right now Cavs are at their weakest, young bloods gotta snatch that false confidence and drink from the well of pride to motivate themselves for greater things; it's that or go cry in the car after your loss. Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Pascal Siakam, OG Anuboy, Stanley Johnson... list goes on about all the new talent that may have big roles in the playoffs in the East.
I'm the only one who should care about Monroe. His primary basketball skill is being hard for Jonas Valanciunas to back down.

I remember that fight last year; stunned Val didn't get ejected with the ref looking right at him.

and naw.... it ain't about being shook, its playoff lebron
dude is younger toguro in the post season and unless your team is godlike you never really stood a chance
When the playoffs start, LeBron will be flying around on defense again, putting up monster numbers, snatching dudes souls, and the Raptors will go back to questioning what life really is about anyway.
Can I just say this Monroe thing exposes the absolute absurdity of the disabled player exception.
Hayward goes down at the beginning of the year so Boston qualifies for a 8.4 million exception. Cousins goes down in late January and the Pels get nothing. Why? Because it happens roughly a week after some arbitrary deadline was placed on when the exception can be applied for.

Pretty big upgrade from Baynes, whose size was already letting Horford get away with looking like a good player.

What allowed Playoff LeBron to be Playoff LeBron? Not playing so many minutes and comfort with his team/role (Two Crowns). So how can he be that if the teams defense is the worst it's been in his run with no help in sight, one of his "wingmen" is out 2 months and has been shit on constantly, and his best wingman is playing on the team closest to dethroning him? He has no comfort and he's playing more minutes at an older age; it hasn't totally caught up with him because he's not giving a fuck about D... which considering their LU that's even worse. Assuming Cleveland doesn't get appreciably better on D and the Celtics (or even Toronto) doesn't get worse on O/D/injured/SHOOK there will be a close series with the Cavs first round for the first time in ages.

By s y Go To PostLebron has been playing stupid minutes the whole time he's been with Cleveland.Ehhh it's getting more stupid though with his increasing age. And right now they aren't in a position where they can even reduce them unlike previous season where he seemed to play a ton for the Hell of it; they nearly dropped to 5th seed in the conference yesterday.
The East has been LeBrons bitch and until someone actually decides to show up in the playoffs I can’t give anyone the benefit of the doubt.
The Cavaliers could be the 7 seed and I'd still expect them to win the conference. Seeding isn't that important for them. It's LeBron, he can go into Toronto or Boston and win road playoffs games.
I have seen DeRozan learn to shoot 3s and Al Horford make an All-Star team. Anything is possibru.
My point is 2016 Finals LeBron could happen in the 1st round and they could get bounced in 7 if no one else steps up/they don't make a deal.

Remember, Cavs usually coast first two rounds; LeBron maybe spends effort for like two games and lets the other guys do the work (Kyrie/Love/bench). Kyrie ain't around and I seriously doubt Thomas can score effectively enough to negate his terrible D. He's overworked now and he's going to work even harder in the playoffs? At what point does the fatigue/injury threshold take over, he's 33.

I would love to say this is the year, but I don't really expect things to be a lot different for Toronto in the playoffs. Lowry's still going to be the same guy. Ibaka's nice to have around but you can't lean on him, his jumper's either on or it's not. OG will be in the middle of hitting his third rookie wall. Unless JV's really taken the next step, the modern game is built to sideline him.
So that leaves me asking, are DeRozan, CJ Miles and playing-way-over-his-head Fred VanVleet really the guys you depend on to take down the Cavs in the playoffs?
The team's passing is better and their 3-point attempts have gone way up, but they're like 27th in 3p%, that's not going to be good enough. They're getting it done in the regular season because they can roll a legit 10-11 deep and still have legs in the second half while the other team fades, that won't be as much of a thing when rotations tighten.
To me this year is about getting to the playoffs, making a bit of noise and feeling really good about so many young guys developing well at once. Maybe you get lucky with matchups and make the conference finals again, but unless Masai makes a significant trade there are too many signs that this isn't the superstar vet squad that's going to impose their will on elite teams.

shit on him so hard his kids have the smell imprinted on them, but went "no disrespect to the man".
The thing I mention with some teams rotations don't have to tighten. If you have won with 10 deep and playing starters only 32 minutes because you have trustworthy bench guys... why suddenly phase those bench guys out to play starters more minutes where they may play inefficiently? It's a matchup game at times where you lean heavily on stars, but there are teams that shouldn't cut their rotations for the heck of it. I'm starting to see Toronto as one of those teams that can hit you with 5 energy guys that change the pace off the bench. Rookie wall is a bitch but fame has been built in the playoffs by overcoming limitations and evolving on the fly.

I think we saw Derozan evolve enough where you don't have to worry about him disappearing on O in the playoffs. Val has played well when he has had minutes in the playoffs, and I think the rookie Trio shouldn't be overwhelmed.

The thing is Toronto's been that beat-you-with-depth team through most of the Casey era. Yeah, they're better at it now, they didn't have Siakam playing wide receiver at PF before, but all those guys still seem too young to be getting over on the Cavs or Celts in the playoffs to me. Siakam, Poeltl and VanVleet are second year players. Wright is still on his rookie deal. OG is a rookie coming off ACL surgery. Powell is in the first year of his first deal and has fallen out of the rotation for most of the season.
I dunno, I'd love to believe they can still out-hustle guys in the playoffs with depth but there seems to be an awful lot of precedent in favour of tight vet rotations.

When the Bucks can ever get their whole roster healthy at the same time, they'll be pretty interesting.
