By blackace Go To PostHe didn't lose millions hurting himself for unpaid work that he almost had to do to go to the NBA? So dumb…Noel is just a terrible example. First, he was drafted 6th which had he been drafted that high out of high school would have put him in the top 10 highest drafts out of high school. He was also in a position where could have gone to any other league or sat out a year, ala Exum or Mudiay. Oh, also he did get money from agents.
Alls i'm saying is go with somebody like Harry Giles.

By reilo Go To PostThen tell the NCAA lawyers themselves because that's their argument for keeping the status quo.I would gladly, that's a stupid argument not only from a legal standpoint (well, i think) but really really stupid for PR.

But again, the argument against the NCAA isn't even about the guys who make it to the NBA. It's the guys who don't.
By diehard Go To PostI would gladly, that's a stupid argument not only from a legal standpoint (well, i think) but really really stupid for PR.So, who are we mad for again? The players for taking a stance on it, or the NCAA for dealing in it?
By giririsss Go To PostNoel was incredibly lucky he got in as many games as he did in college, and that it was a pretty mediocre draft.I agree. Guys who are really good at basketball and football but not good enough to go pro are definitely getting screwed.

By reilo Go To PostSo, who are we mad for again? The players for taking a stance on it, or the NCAA for dealing in it?I don't really think I'm mad at anybody. I was happy to see that "students athletes" were now getting a larger stipend. I have no problems with players speaking their mind, even if sometimes I wonder if they truly understand the situation (not that i do).

And That’s the overwhelming majority of these players

I can't even

Oh, also he did get money from agents.Noel walked into that season as the number 1 or 2 pick...locked and fell to 6th that's literally millions of dollars regardless how much you might think he is a knucklehead or whatever... He most likely would had fallen further but Philly didn't want a player that year...
Alls i'm saying is go with somebody like Harry Giles.
Sit out a year? Lose millions
Go overseas? Most likely lose millions (but at least make some change)
I was usually with Kevin O'Connor but his "Ingram might be a better draft pick than Simmons" is just next level dumb.

By Random Ass Username Go To PostAgree to disagree with no rebuttals for the first paragraph. All that exploitation and financial snake oil salesman shit given to little kids and vulnerable poor families as well as the unpaid labor of people working their ass off in college somehow falls short of the term slavery because domestic human trafficking exists. "Other people have it worse." Absolute vacuum of intellectual retort.
"Absolute vacuum."
>_>
Do you guys actually want to derail this thread forever with this?
I mean if so, let's go. If this isn't all just a bunch of hysterical comparisons based on an utterly superficial categorization that completely misses the degradation, dehumanization, deprivation and coercion/captivity that make slavery a unique ethical category, let's see the follow through here.
Tell me honestly that if you were offered the chance to play at Kansas or UNC you would have said "No way! That's equivalent to involuntary penal labour in a for-profit prison! I'm going to take this 16 hour a day assembly job at Foxconn instead, it's basically the same thing but at least it pays." I really want to know this. This is what you are telling me you would say.
Tell me we're going to rename the NCAA thread the All-Slavery League OT. And then ban it because it's obviously deeply unethical to signal-boost such a thing. I'm quite sure none of you are following NCAA basketball right now because of your deeply held personal convictions.
damn kyoto going hard
basketball is about to start and we do have a thread about the NCAA.. just a suggestion.

You're still hopping, skipping and jumping over the unpaid labor part to make asinine points that are not relevant to working and laboring and not seeing proper financial compensation. What else do we call being steered around and these athletes performing physical labor making everyone else money but themselves? What should we call the targeting of a specific class and race of people as young as middle school with little to no economic prospects as is? Yeah lets go there about what "choices" certain people have. I'm not averse to this discussion at all. A lot of people "choose" to join the military because they are bereft of any other prospects. Choice in this matter when you're still a child/young adult and want better for yourself and your family and are given a pathway but don't see the pitfalls because you're not meant to or informed of them as part of a larger process to exploit you, let's discuss that. Let's talk choices, manipulation and people using others physical labor for their own financial agendas and picking out vulnerable individuals in order to do so. I see nothing of your postings actually grappling with this idea, it's just shitting on players for "choices" you think they have or you have and nothing at all to do with the reality other people go through. What should we call an entire institutionalized process of exploiting people for free labor?

Here are some sites to go try to grab these that will ship internationally, or try your luck at a raffle for them. These are probably going to be the rarest shoes of the year, probably for over 2000 USD.

I can’t believe it’s 2018 and people still aren’t 1000% behind student athletes.
I can’t believe there’s even a discussion to be had regarding this when the NCAA used the 13th amendment as a defense for their actions.
