By Smokey Go To PostSettling in to the new space…just ordered the BDI 8173 cabinet:

This is finally arriving this week. Gotta give props to Magnolia and the customer service, its been pretty great. The GM of the department has personally called and text during the waiting period and keeping me updated in the status, setting up the appointments etc. I guess it's not everyday that somebody orders a $2.5k cabinet, but they've been on top of it with the support.
Gonna deliver, build it, run the cables and devices etc in one go.. Get home from work and it should all be done.
You’re describing customer service as one should expect it to be honestly. Shouldn’t matter if it’s a 2500 dollar piece of furniture or a 100 dollar pair of headphones. Too bad it seems like it’s a thing to be found less and less these days. Oh the other hand, makes it’s easier for the store I work for to distinguish ourselves from the big box stores.
It never fails to amaze me when people act surprised when you offer them to bring their purchase to their car.

It's definitely not the standard thing over here lol.
Most of the time you buy, barely make eye contact with the sales clerk, set up an appointment, ok bye
Lord forbid you ever have to call-in because they fucked up...
Custom service is one of the big reasons Amazon won out. They made that part first class.

I always hate it when a customer calls me to enquire about the delivery time of their order. I really hammer our guys to keep a check on their current backorders and to call their customers when we get an update from our supplier. But they simply forgot from time to time. Causing unneeded frustration for the customer. People don't mind waiting as long as our communication is on point.
And about that barely making eye contact thing. We have those kind of stores as well of course. If you walk into a big box store like Mediamarkt you basically don't have to expect a guy that knows what he's selling. He's mostly there for some minor questions and to grab the product for you. That's totally different in our stores mainly because we're specialized in audio and video. When I have someone coming in and they tell me they want to buy product 'X' I will never just go downstairs and grab it for them. We will always ask what your plans are to find out if the product does even suit your needs. And more often than not the customer ends up going home with something completely different. Or with something to think about it. That's the biggest reason why I enjoy working in hifi so much, it's very personal and you meet so many different people. Especially since my move to the bigger store I've been selling anything from 40 euros wired earbuds to complete villas with CI speakers for 30.000 euros.

Yeah you're definitely not getting that from the standard side of a big box retailer like Best Buy. This is my first time dealing exclusively with the Magnolia section, and the experience has been night and day. Even when discussing delivery of the cabinet, the manager of Magnolia completely cut off the standard Best Buy folks and put me with their own custom team. The entire experience is something I'm not used to when buying electronics, even when I bought my 77 CX.
Customer service is one of the reasons why small spots win out ... but I imagine most customers just want to walk in and not have any sort of interaction at all because they deem to know what they want. Eventually price and availability will trump any of that which is where the big boys have their advantage. Why worry about customer service if you got the best price and availability? It's a tough catch-22.
Yeah it can be tough out there. We can fight the prizes though luckily. We're a specialized 'small' retailer. But also 100+ stores big spread over 5 countries. We're a major player for a few of the brands we carry. So that helps a lot. That's also one of the reasons I was able to secure a sparepart for Kibner where Audioquest in the states wasn't even able to help him. Word of mouth also really helps us convert big box shoppers to come into our stores. Sometimes I'm really amazed by people being surprised we sell TV's while I'm literally standing amidst of a couple of brand new OLEDs and Samsung models. In my country we still have a lot of potential to win. But in Scandinavia we've been a household name for many years now.
And it also helps that most of the stuff we sell is the kind of gear you'll want to experience in person. And we're one of the few that can offer that, none of the big box stores have Dali and B&W speakers for example. And from Denon/Marantz they only carry the entry level gear. So that helps our case luckily.

I can't wait to finally buy a house... I've always said that I wouldn't buy a TV until I moved into it, which should hopefully be over the next several months. (I've just had my PC and consoles hooked up to PC monitors over the years)
I'm conflicted on TVs though... I know the OLED TV's have amazing picture quality and features for gaming, but I also do a lot of 30 fps gaming (I'll choose high resolution over higher frame rate EVERY time), watching 24 fps anime and movies, etc... and I'm kinda concerned about stutter/judder at lower frame rates. Plus hopefully the screen wouldn't be too shiny/reflective as I do most of my viewing in the daytime. I'm not concerned about burn in at all though, as my phone screen is OLED and hasn't had a single issue. The deep blacks and colors really appeal to me, but I dunno...
I also know there's no such thing as a perfect TV and they all have drawbacks though

Poor motion resolution is an issue across basically all modern TV technology. They’ll all have different ways of combatting it, with an LG you’ll have BFI that gets better each year, not certain what the LEDs do, but they’re all sample-and-hold techs so that stutter and judder will be endemic
The BDI 8173 arrived yesterday:
Looks really damn good, and the build quality is super nice. Has plenty of storage for future expansion. Going to get a wall cover for the cables this weekend, and probably put the router on the side next to the sub, somewhere. Wasn't sure that the PS5 would fit, but it made it, with space to spare. Holds up to a 88'' TV. This thing won't get replaced for years lol.

Gorgeous... gotta hide that router though dude.
Also, does the arc not need some more room above it to leave clear air for the up-firing speakers?

The router won't fit in the space vertically, it could go horizontal although it specifically says not to use it that way on it. I'll probably move it to the left directly behind the cabinet on the ground.
And yes about the Arc, in theory. I tried John Wick 3 on it after it was setup and I could still hear the effect. You can also adjust height volume in thr Sonos app, which I did, and it didn't seem to be an issue.
very nice smokey
is that enough breathing room for the ps5? i always wondered how consoles would fare in cabinets like that. i've seen some people install fans at the back which seem like a pretty excessive solution..
soundbars always look weird tbh

A soundbar underneath a wall mounted tv usually looks pretty dope. But not when you leave this little space between the two. Now it looks a bit off.
Cool furniture piece though, enjoy!

Meh. I like things mounted, although I have had it on the top of my previous entertainment center.. Just need to cover those cables, pretty sure I have a cover somewhere in the boxes from the move.

Each cabinet has ventilation on the bottom, through the front doors, and the back. It should be fine.
That's lovely Smokey, love that stand.
My poor man's edition:
I hate it. Freakishly tall. The only thing I like is how the sound is boosted by the walls around it, milking the L shaped room for what's worth. Soundbar ends up spreading the sound better than I could've imagined in that section.
But I'm in the process of moving the gaming upstairs. Just gotta bring the rest of the speakers from the other place, and then get a new TV because this LG one is so bad.
Then mount the back speakers on the ceiling.

I believe the conclusion was: make sure there are a couple inches around the intakes and exhausts and make sure you aren't circulating the hot air from the exhaust into the intake.
By Smokey Go To PostWhat's wrong with the LG?
LG UJ63 that was a left over from an office, basically just used to put on something when friends come over to play board games and the like. It has poor contrast, HDR is to be switched off, and it basically has no blacks just shades of grey. Great input lag though.

Looked at the Sonos site for the mount and yeah, it should be 4 inches below the TV for maximum sound quality. Although it sounds fine, now this bugs me lol.
In doing so also found a Sanus Arc mount that can extend the bar out from the wall 5" in addition to being flush.
Thinking heavy on getting that + moving it down ~4".

I would also add that the ps5 in that enclosed space is a tad worrisome. I assumed the back was open, but alas....

It's ventilated in the back, bottom, and through the cabinet doors. You can see the ventilation slats in the empty parts of the cabinet.

I get it about the LG. I had a Samsung LED that was top end at the time, with 3D and everything (RIP). This was before I was really paying attention to display tech. Over time, the flaws in that thing became super apparent. Grey blacks. Horrible input lag. Horrible viewing angles. Just bad PQ overall. Your LG at least has good input lag..
Actually responsible for me swearing off LED tech for awhile. It wasn't until Sonys Z9D came out that I started paying attention to them again (at least the high end sets).
The Z9D was crazy at the time. Of course the following year Sony nerfed the Z9F.

Samsung OLEDs are coming
This is going to be the next big leap in OLED tech. They will be using RGB. LG has probably maxed out as far as they can go on the current oled tech.

Higher res https://abload.de/img/db07da57-ebd2-4f48-b86jnm.jpeg
These are just old speakers. Two Yamaha ns m103 speakers in front from an old 5.1 setup, gotta bring the rest of them still, and then sideways two Technics sb cs70. The soundbar is a yas-207, along with the sub which I was curious to see if it would even work all together.
It does with caveats, TV sends HDMI and optical at the same time, gotta run everything in stereo, PCM, compensate for mismatch volumes between equipments, and voi la. Not really intended to be the final result, as I plan to remove the soundbar, but damn… Tenet was kicking ass, gets really loud and sounds really good.
Moved the Arc down, hid the wires. Router behind the cabinet. Cant go through the wall to his cables, so this is as good as it’s going to get.
Picture doesn’t capture how big the TV and how long the Arc is, but they fill the wall nicely. That mount also extends the Arc out 5” from the wall.
